The Secret Office Life of Married Coauthors by C. D. Hersh

Blood_Brothers_Cover_2People always want to know how we manage to work together as a husband and wife writing team. We hear things from other writers like, “I’d kill my spouse if I tried to work with him,” or “We don’t talk the same language,” or “He doesn’t get romance.”
Although we work well together, we don’t always speak the same language, nor are all our discussions cotton-candy-sweet-yes-dear comment filled ones. Our discussions over what a character should do, say, or how he or she should react, our choice of phrasing, or plot and story ideas can get animated, and not always in a good way. Once, while vacationing with friends, we were discussing a story, and our friend heard us getting quite heated. Concerned, she stopped what she was doing and listened, because she had never heard us raise our voices at one another before. Then she realized we were talking about a book we were working on and went back to what she was doing, no longer worried.
Just so everyone doesn’t think we are superhero co-writers who never disagree, we’ve decided to share a few things you might hear if you were a fly on our office wall, while we work on revisions:
• That idea sucks.
• Really? You guys think like that?
• Don’t touch my keyboard, Catherine. You’ll screw it up.
• That’s not how you spell …(choose any homophone. Donald can’t keep most of them straight)
• You missed half the sentence I said.
• If you’d have told me you were doing more than talking out loud I might have known what to put down.
• Be quiet. I can’t think when you think out loud.
• What? You’re not going to change anything about that sentence? (Usually said by Donald to Catherine concerning something he wrote.)
• I can’t help it if you don’t like any of my suggestions. You make one. Then I’ll decide if I like it, or if we trash that, too.
• I want to quit now…Too bad, I don’t want to.

Fortunately, for Catherine and their writing, Donald does get romance. But that’s a story for another time.

Here’s an excerpt from Blood Brothers, the second book of C.D. Hersh’s paranormal romance series The Turning Stone Chronicles – due out this summer.

Harry Williams paused at the entrance to Alexi’s ER room, hand hovering over the doorknob, uncertain when he heard the voices inside. Did she have company? He peeked in through a crack in the window curtain. The only people he recognized were Alexi and Rhys. He moved from the door, planning to return later.

“Captain,” Rhys called as he opened the door. “Come in.”

“I’m not intruding?”

“No. Alexi will be glad to see you.”

Harry stepped into the room. Going immediately to her bedside, he set the small vase of flowers he’d brought on the nightstand. “Didn’t know what kind you liked.”

Retrieving the vase, she held the flowers to her nose and inhaled. “These are gorgeous, Captain. Thank you.”

Tubes stuck into his favorite homicide detective’s arms. She seemed so helpless hooked to the equipment. Not at all like the fearless woman he knew. “You going to be okay?”

“I’ve got to stay in for a few days, but then I should be fine.”

He glared at Rhys. “How did you let her get mauled by a panther?”

“She ran in ahead of me … like she always does.”

“Headstrong woman,” Harry said to Alexi.

“That’s what makes me so good,” she replied with a smile that lit her drawn face. Alexi directed his attention toward the older man. “This is Eli McCraigen, an old friend of Baron’s, and this,”

she said, pointing to the woman, “is Delaney Ramsey. Our boss, Captain Harry Williams.”

Giving Eli a cursory nod, Harry then turned toward Delaney. A pair of turquoise eyes shown out of a china doll face, with the slightest hint of a middle age crease around her cupid bow mouth. A minute past before he found his voice. “Ms. Delaney, nice to meet you,” he said with a squeak. He hadn’t jumped octaves like that since his teenage acne cleared.

Smiling, her face lit. Amused, no doubt, by him. His gaze swept over her. She had a body a man could lose himself in. When she caught him enjoying the view, she blushed and returned the favor.
The once-over caused him to respond faster than he thought possible. A woman had not made him react like that in a long time. Women were a distraction. One he’d only dallied with occasionally since his wife left him. They all ran the minute they heard he was a career cop.

Self Publishing-the pros and cons of it by JoAnne Myers

LMM_book_cover_2 The best thing about self-publishing is that you are guaranteed to be published, no matter what type book you choose to write. Traditional publishers often look for something not yet written about, or seldom written about; such as true life alien abductions, or what Earth might be like in the year 4000, if humans last that long.

Self-publishing allows the author more leeway with subject matter. The author can tell it like it is; unlike traditional publishers who generally follow a code of conduct, for the fear of treading on someone’s toes. Traditional publishers always have that fear of being sued for libel, whereas self-publishers tend to not care what others think.

With self publishing every detail is up to the author. From hiring a professional editor if the self publishing author is not prolific in the English language. Editing is expensive, and every book, even self publishing needs some editing to help polish the final product. Self-publishing does offer editing and marketing services, but for an additional price, that can be expensive. All that work is taken care of by a traditional publisher, which means less headaches and work for the author.

When it comes to book covers, self-publishing companies usually give the author a selection of artwork to choose from. Some of this artwork is free, but some usually cost a few dollars. The free artwork is seldom great, and might not coincide with the books material. For paid artwork at self-publishing companies, the artwork is upgraded and more pleasing to the eye, but is an extra cost, which might for some self-publishers, mean an extra dent in their pocketbooks. Traditional publishers have their own art department, which means the author is guaranteed a terrific book cover, which is included in the contract. Both self-publishing and traditional publishing companies, though, usually allow the author to use their own artwork if the author chooses too, especially if the book is about the author’s family, pet, friends, or profession. Using personal artwork adds a touch of personification and genuine sincerity to the book; which is always a good selling point.

What I discovered through Amazon, and something they did not tell me in the beginning, is that with them, the author must keep a supply of their books at the Amazon warehouse. Amazon is not a print on demand (POD) distributor as is Lulu, as I initially believed it to be. Also, with the author’s books being stored at the Amazon warehouse, the author is charged for a monthly storage fee. I don’t know what this storage fee is, but I do know, that the more books the author keeps stored, the higher the storage fee is. This storage requirement can be expensive. The author is required to pay this monthly storage fee, even if their book does not sell. When it comes to any type of artwork, whether it be books, jewelry, or candles, artwork is usually a hard product to sell. If it were easy, all artists and authors would be wealthy.

Lulu on the other hand, is a print on demand self publisher. They do not store books, but keep each title stored in a queue, at a contracted print on demand printer.

Also, what I understand is that Lulu allows 80% of the royalties to go to the author, and Amazon allows 70%, but that percentage is only applicable for books sold to certain countries outside of the U.S., such as Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and India, and only for titles enrolled in KDP Select. This in reality, means that the author receives an average 35% of the sales, and Amazon gets the other 65%.

A author can struggle with locating a traditional publishing company for many reasons. They have written a book that only they are interested in; such as their family history. I don’t believe most would be interested in reading about someone else’s family tree, unless it is as brilliant as the book Roots, was. If a author is struggling with locating a traditional publishing company, than self-publishing is for them. I for one believe that if a writer has written a book, they should continue seeking out the traditional publishing company. This only applies if their book is polished and ready for sale. If a book has many graphical errors, it will not be taken seriously by a traditional publisher. Getting away with graphical errors in a self-published book is possible, but it would be disappointing and frustrating to the reader. Whether the book is self-published or traditionally published, the final product should be free of errors, and entertaining, and pleasing to the eye. In my opinion, when it comes to Lulu versus Amazon, Amazon bites the dust. Good luck.

Excerpt
For the Love of Ginnie

I don’t know why I wanted to save the life of a person I never met. Maybe it was because I was tired of bachelorhood. Maybe it was because I was a chemist and the unusual, and unexplained, fascinated me. Or, maybe, it was because I was obsessed with this twenty-year-old, dark-haired beauty named Mary Virginia “Ginnie” Wade I had read about. These questions filtered through my mind as I drove to the bar to meet my best friend Will.

Will’s favorite hangout was “The Bling,” originally an old truck stop on State Route 93, in Nelsonville, Ohio. The place became a restaurant/lounge/dance hall and brothel when semis no longer became a necessity for long distance hauling. The invention of the transporter also replaced many other primitive jobs such as mail delivery and travel. “The Bling” was best known for the large flashing lights suggesting scantily clad women in seductive positions above the front entrance, and its “bulldogs,” monster-sized bouncers in Armani suits who patrolled its two-block perimeter, inside and out.

“The Bling,” just another joint with a sleazy atmosphere, like all alcohol-serving establishments, differed only in that it catered exclusively to class “A” clientele. Politely—or maybe not so politely—everyone called it the “Whorehouse for the rich and bored.” Its reputation grew. Its income grew even faster.

I pulled up in front and exited my vintage DeLorian, tossing the keys to the baby-faced valet, by-passed the doorman with no questions asked. Just an exchange of large smiles between us. Will was also part-owner.

As I entered the twenty-four carat gold, electronic doors, Will immediately spotted me and motioned me toward the bar with his diamond embellished hand.

I loved sitting at the bar. It was the perfect place to see the shows. “Two double scotches and water,” Will said, as we shook hands, and I slid into my seat beside him, just as the tall, leggy waitress produced the drinks in an instant.

I immediately recognized the “girl” as one of the latest “do-everything-like-a-wife” robotics. Robot manufacturing had become a booming business since the last war destroyed the immune and reproductive systems in most humans, especially females.

“I don’t know why you waste your time flirting with non-humans,” I said, cautiously sipping my drink. The immense emptiness of not being able to acquire a wife and soul mate, I felt at this age in my life, almost drove me to alcoholism, but my boss and mentor, Doctor Obar Gabry, intervened, saving my life and promising career.

“Because, dear friend,” Will began, “beggars can’t be choosey, and ladies are in scarce supply. Beside, these ‘girls’ are all pink inside.”

“Ugh!” I said, gulping down a large swallow of alcohol as if it could wash away my friend’s vile mental picture from my mind.

“Come on, Alex, loosen up. Live a little.” Will motioned to the waitress for another round of drinks. “You’re alive, so act like it. Don’t let your beautiful mind go to waste. This world needs people like you. People started treating me like a god once I became an entrepreneur, and I love it.”

I had to laugh. Maybe my self-pity stage had outlived its use. Only I can find a wife for myself. I certainly won’t ask Will to hook me up. His sense of values are as artificial as the women he beds.

The pain and loneliness I felt at times from yearning for a life-long partner and family wasn’t easy to accomplish. Scientific and Medical technology still could not reverse the sterilization effects on the female species.

Sure there were some human women to date. But most were either sterile, too old, too young, or there was just no chemistry between the two of us. I wanted that spark that unites between two people madly in love…like my parents. I never met any couple happier with one another then my beloved parents. That’s the kind of love I want…never ending.

The emptiness and frustration of not finding companionship at times made me want to die. But that was the loneliness talking. I know that now. I love life. I want to live, and I know who I want for a wife. It’s just that meeting her would be a little tricky.

Abruptly, I asked, “What do you think about time travel?”

“Are you serious?” Will asked. “Scientists have tried to conquer time travel for hundreds of years, and failed.”

“Maybe they failed because they weren’t Doctor Gabry and me.”

Will looked at me in awe. “Oh, my god, you’re serious!”

“We discovered something today in the lab,” I said, giving him an arrogant smile. “We believe this is the answer.”

“So who is to be the Guinea pig?”

“Me.”

Silence came from Will, then a gasp. “That could be suicide.”

“Or the biggest discovery of the thirtieth century.”

Tough Times? That’s When Love Matters Most by Michele Callahan

callahan_red_night1_2I know we all love to read about romance and happily ever after. I know I do. A great book is my first line of defense against the insanity that is sometimes our “real” lives. Hectic schedules, work, kids, more work, sick parents, bills, sick children, laundry, cleaning, and sick pets. It’s a challenge when those we love are going through hard times. But life is messy, and that mess is out there waiting for each and every one of us every day.

My dear, dear friend is going through hell right now with an unexpected and very serious illness in her family. I hugged her, I took her daughter for the weekend, and I check in every day to find out what she needs. Most days it’s nothing more than a friend to talk to and someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to stand in the arena with her and have her back while she’s making tough decisions for the person in the world she loves beyond thought or reason.

Love is getting her through it. Her love for him. His love for her. And the love and support of their kids, their friends, and their families. What they have is the happily-ever-romance…twenty-five years later. That’s the kind of love that sticks, that really, really matters. That’s the kind of love I try to write about. The kind of love that kept my dad by my mother’s side as she battled cancer. The kind of love that is a friend opening her home to another as she recovers from unexpected surgery. That kind of love is the glue that holds the world together, and I hope you all have some of it in your lives.

Please share a story or brief comment about a spouse, child, sister, or friend that helped you through a hard time, that loved you. Let’s say I LOVE YOU today to someone that matters. Let them know.

silver_storm_0314-for-web-s_2Hoping life brings hugs and love to you all!

Coming June 15 – ALPHAS UNLEASHED ANTHOLOGY including CHIMERA BORN – The first of the new Chimera Series from Michele Callahan!

Excerpt: CHIMERA BORN
“What are you boys up to?” Zoey Williams whispered the question to herself where she lay sprawled across a cold boulder, careful to keep her body flat to the ground. Her forest camo would keep her hidden from the air. She couldn’t afford to create a profile for one of the perimeter patrols to see from the ground.

She’d worked too long and too hard for this story. Tracked one of the soldiers for months, followed him, stalked him, and bribed several friends to get his phone and credit card records. The man she tracked was an ex-Navy S.E.A.L.

Some “ex”. The man was still in a uniform. Still carried a weapon and gear and reported to someone at Fort Carson. And most telling of all? He still disappeared for days or weeks at a time.

But, according to the government, the man didn’t even exist. If not for her informant, she never would have discovered him or his team. Her blog had brought her some strange bedfellows, and some terrifying allies.

This time, the file her anonymous friend sent to her had led her here, to this man and this mountain. She’d tracked this soldier for the last few months. Every time something crazy hit the tabloids about alien sightings, portals, other dimensions, or UFOs, this guy disappeared for a while.

He was an asshole. She knew that much. Dropped the F-bomb like it was his favorite verb, snarled at everyone he talked to, and was one of the most self-contained and brutally efficient people she’d ever followed. He was also suspicious as hell. He’d nearly caught her twice.

And in the years she’d spent as a journalist in her previous life she’d become very good at not getting caught. Very good at being a fly on the wall, unseen and unnoticed. Unfortunately, that skill had cost her everything, her identity, her family, her ‘normal’ life.

She’d survived, and this mountain estate was her prize. There was something here, something inside the house that broadcast energy like a radio station pumping out hard metal music. Nothing shy or soft about this place. It screamed to be heard.

The energy pulsed through her body in waves, painful staccato bursts like ice needles piercing her heart.

Zoey ignored the sensation and continued taking photos of the soldiers, the house and the vehicles’ license plates. Everything she could document would go up on her blog. The more she had, the more people would believe her.

She needed the world to wake up! A year ago she’d been like the rest of them. Blind. Helpless. Safe in her dream world and ignorant of the truth.

The truth. Such a small word to carry so much power.

Setting her camera aside, Zoey double-checked the anti-reflective cover on her binoculars and scanned the surrounding hills once more. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming her way. Something powerful and very, very evil.

Movement. There! To her right and a bit farther up the adjoining swell of hillside.

She focused in and her heart froze, skipped a beat, shocked back into a frantic rhythm when she saw him.

God, he was beautiful. Dark hair that fell past his shoulders, a bare chest chiseled to perfection and abs any elite athlete on the planet would kill for. But his beauty wasn’t what stunned her.

It was the blood. And the chains. And the fact that he was moving straight toward her at an inhuman pace. That and the terrifying creatures she spotted moving like dark water down from the higher terrain behind him…

CHIMERA BORN – part of the ALPHAS UNLEASHED anthology with S.E. Smith, Carolyn Jewel, Mina Khan, and Michele Callahan – Coming June 15!

MAGIC OF THE NILE by Veronica Scott

MagicOfTheNile_1600x2400_2Always a pleasure to be your guest, Cindy! I just got back from the 2014 RT Booklovers Conference in New Orleans, where authors, booksellers, publishing people and Readers all get together for about a week of workshops, book signings and other events. One of the evenings was a special Mardi Gras-themed field trip to the warehouse where the floats reside. The first items that greeted me inside the door were from an Egyptian-themed float! Since I write a connected paranormal romance series, “Gods of Egypt” I felt right at home.

In my most recent novel, “Magic of the Nile,” there’s a parade, in honor of the Crocodile God Sobek. I won’t give spoilers but my heroine Tyema is his high priestess and she’s in Thebes on a secret mission for Sobek, which also involves Pharaoh. As part of the festivities surrounding her visit, the priests from the local temple of Sobek co-ordinate a procession, providing dancers, acrobats, the ancient version of “floats” and many more amazements for the crowd of ordinary citizens lining the streets. Pharaoh provides free beer and a feast afterward. Tyema is responsible for a crocodile riding her “float” with her.

I always do research when my characters have to participate in events of this nature because even though my series is paranormal, I like to ground the plots in as much authentic detail as I can. There are wonderful tomb paintings of parades and of the “floats” used to carry the statues of the various gods, as well as the elaborate chairs and litters for Pharaoh and any lesser human dignitaries, like my heroine. For one thing, I discovered it took twelve to sixteen big strong men to carry the chair/throne Pharaoh would ride during the parade, depending on which elaborate conveyance he chose. (I added a few more to carry my priestess since she has a crocodile with her.)

Hollywood has done a good job of portraying parades in ancient times, especially in the 1955 epic “Land of the Pharaohs”. The parade scene there looks as if they copied directly from the tomb paintings. Oddly enough though, I also drew inspiration from a two and a half minute scene in the 1955 musical “Kismet” where the caliph is marching to meet his hoped-for bride. That scene has nothing to do with ancient Egypt (or much of anything historically accurate!) but I love the colors, the dancers, the song…the Muse draws her creativity from odd places sometimes. So the “Kismet” soundtrack provided the background while I wrote my scene but the parade itself is all ancient Egypt.

It’s interesting to me how universal the idea of enjoying a good parade is – from ancient times, to the Rose Parade where I live, to the Mardi Gras parades.

Here’s an excerpt from “Magic of the Nile”:
Nat-re-Akhte wore the double crown of Egypt today, and carried the cobalt blue-and-gold crook and flail of power. His kilt was fine linen, pleated, tinted with gold, tied with the elaborate red sash. A leopard skin was draped across one side of the kilt. He wore the magnificent pectoral depicting Horus the Falcon on his chest, gold, coral and turquoise gleaming in the sun. Pharaoh’s cloak was red, trimmed in gold and bearing his cartouche skillfully embroidered, guarded by a falcon on one side and the cobra on the other. The ceremonial braided beard adorned his chin today, although normally he was clean shaven, like most of his male subjects. It was almost painful to behold Pharaoh in all his glory. As he walked along the line of marchers, people knelt and genuflected.

Tyema’s heart beat faster at the honor of participating in a procession with Pharaoh. My astounding new cloak might be beautiful, but mere feathers can’t outshine a living Great One.

Paying the crocodile no heed, Nat-re-Akhte stopped for a moment beside her chair. “Are you ready for this, Lady Tyema?”

“Indeed, my lord. It’s all so much grander than I’d imagined, but the procession pays proper tribute to Sobek. Thank you.” She knew if Pharaoh hadn’t taken a personal interest in this ceremony, things would have been done on a much lesser scale.

He nodded. “An outstanding cloak, my dear, quite unusual. The priests of the Theban temples will have yet another reason to feel cast into the shade. And so they should.” He didn’t wait for an answer but walked to his own chair, separated from hers by heralds and standard bearers with the insignia of the Nomes of Egypt, the one for Nat-re-Akhte’s home province being foremost. The back of his chair was a glorious gilded rendition of the sun rising over the Nile. Uncut rubies set at the tip of each ray sparkled in the real sun as it rose higher. Six fan bearers took up position on either side of him as the burly litter bearers raised the chair high. In front of him soldiers stood ready to march, carrying his gold encrusted bow, shield and sword, accompanied by two handlers with Pharaoh’s snarling hunting leopards on leashes. Behind him was another miniature boat, elaborately constructed and painted, bearing an effigy of the god Horus, Pharaoh’s personal sponsor among the Great Ones. Depicted in falcon form, the statue was taller than a man, wings outspread, decorated in vibrant multicolored enamel and blue faience, with the head gold plated. Gleaming eyes, one a diamond and the other a yellow stone she couldn’t name, gazed upon the scene. Tyema knew Horus and Sobek maintained a friendly rivalry, so she could find no fault with the parade concluding on a tribute to Horus.

Pharaoh must have made some sign she missed because suddenly her litter was raised into the air. Tyema clutched the arms of her chair as the eighteen men carrying her and the crocodile adjusted their hold on the ebony poles to achieve maximum stability. Far ahead, at the beginning of the procession, she heard the blare of trumpets. From her new position, supported on the shoulders of the massive litter bearers, three men at each corner and on both sides in the middle, she could see movement in the ranks of marchers. She took a deep breath, knowing she had to stay calm to play her part in this pageant, and more importantly, to ensure the crocodile played his. So far the animal stayed locked in his regal pose, watching his surroundings with the deceptively lazy demeanor of his kind. The litter bearers closest to him exuded almost palpable fear, and she wished she’d had time to reassure the men the crocodile was firmly under her control.

Music began, a somber march supported by the rhythmic pounding of drums and then a moment later, her litter was in motion. As she was carried through the gates of the palace road onto the wide street, the roar of the assembled crowd made her blink. The roadway was lined with excited, expectant people, at least ten deep, come to see the parade and marvel. Tyema stared straight ahead as she’d been instructed although it seemed wrong not to acknowledge the people who’d come to watch. The cheers for Pharaoh were deafening. Nat-re-Akhte was a popular ruler, much beloved. She glanced back once, and saw him sitting straight and unsmiling, the picture of a Great One come to life. She was glad she’d met him in private prior to today, knew what a kind and thoughtful person he was, despite wearing the Two Crowns and being a god walking the earth.

The procession wove through Thebes along the path they’d all agreed to, passing the large temples of other Great Ones and coming to a halt in front of the somewhat less impressive building that was Sobek’s….

The standalone sequel to Priestess of the Nile…picks up about fifteen years later and tells the tale of Tyema, who was the younger sister in Priestess of the Nile…

After a childhood spent scorned and ignored by her family because of her crippled foot, Tyema was magically healed then installed as the High Priestess of his temple by Sobek the Crocodile God. But Tyema is still haunted by her memories, scarred by the abuse she endured. Despite Sobek’s protection, as an adult she’s become a near recluse inside the temple grounds…

Until Captain Sahure arrives in her remote town, sent from Thebes on an urgent mission for Pharaoh, requiring High Priestess Tyema’s help. From that moment on, her quiet, safe life is upended in ways she never could have expected.

But after a whirlwind romance with Sahure, the two part as Pharaoh orders him to undertake another assignment on Egypt’s dangerous frontier, far from Tyema’s remote town.

Heart-broken, Tyema is ready to return to her life of loneliness, official duties and, now, regret. But the Crocodile God has other plans for his priestess: she must uncover the sorcerer who threatens Pharaoh’s life with black magic. Soon enough, Tyema finds herself thrown into the chaos of Pharoah’s court, neck deep in intrigue and danger. Just when she thinks she can’t take the pressures of a very public court life and her secret investigation for the Crocodile God any longer, Sahure re-enters the scene.

But is her former love there to help or to hinder? Can they resolve their differences and work together to find the dark sorcerer who threatens Pharaoh and Egypt? Will the love between a proud warrior and a shy priestess lead them to a future together?

An Interview with Juli Revezzo

Hi Juli, thank you for being my guest today. I hope you have a great time.

TAINEW700copy_2What genre(s) do you write in and why?

My novel Passion’s Sacred Dance is Fantasy romance and my others the Antique Magic series (The Artist’s Inheritance, Caitlin’s Book of Shadows, Drawing Down the Shades), is dark fantasy, or sometimes it’s called paranormal fantasy. Why do I write fantasy? That’s a harder question to answer, but I’ve always been in love with tales of magic, of knights and honor and magical quests, I suppose. 

All self-pubbed books are rumoured to be shoddily edited. What do you say to that?

In a word, that’s untrue. Any blanket statement is always untrue. Are books shoddily edited or is it that “mean girls” are popping up using what tiny bit of power they have to nitpick? I think it’s the latter. Yes, it’s a good idea to have someone look over your work before you publish it. In the end the editor is useless. YOU, the writer, are your final and best editor. You must know how to say what you want to say. If your editor/critique partner/beta reader/spell check misses something (and believe me, they will), you have to catch it. Pay an editor if you want (although I’m sure you can find someone to barter with), but in the end, print the book out, get a copy from Createspace and give it one last once over before you “release” it to the world. And then, finally, remember, we’re all human, we all make typos. I understand why Indies are held to a higher standard than the top companies are (when they’re, a lot of times, worse offenders), but you can get around it with a little care. I say, if you can’t pay someone to beta read/critique, and edit you, barter for it. Take them to lunch, format their book, critique for them, mow their lawn. Type up a letter for them, whatever you can provide for them. You don’t need to break the bank like some people would have you believe.

Drawing-Down-the-Shades475_2What advice can you offer readers of self-pubbed books in making a decision on what to read?

First and foremost, don’t judge a book by its publisher name. Just because (fill in favorite publisher here) is stamped on the side, doesn’t mean it’s going to be worth your money. Judge and think for yourself. Read a bit, and if you don’t like it, big deal. Sell it back. That’s what we did before the advent of the internet. Why should we do anything less because we can download books by the bucket load, and sometimes, for free?

Do you have critique partners?

Yes.

Tell us about your hero. Give us one of his strengths and one of his weaknesses.

Aaron, the hero of Passion’s Sacred Dance, is a warrior from the early Celtic tribes; his strength is in his self-discipline, and his single-mindedness in keeping to his mission to protect Stacy Macken, our heroine. Weakness? He has a brother in arms who pushes his buttons and who he’d like to whallop if the gods allowed them to spar. 😉

Trevor, the hero of the Antique Magic series, well, he’s driven even if it’s not always by his own power. 😉 And, importantly, he knows a true relationship relies on give and take. Though, his heroine Caitlin can pretty much kick butt all on her own, thank you very much. He’s had some hard knocks, so far but he’ll be coming into his own.

PassionsSacredDance_w6021_300_2Tell us about your heroine. Give us one of her strengths and one of her weaknesses.

The heroine of Passion’s Sacred Dance, Stacy, is an historian who inherited a patch of sacred ground and the duty to oversee the coming sacred battle, from her family legacy. She’s incredibly smart—but, she just didn’t quite believe she would ever be the chosen steward so she’s having a little trouble accepting the truth.

The heroine of my Antique Magic series, Caitlin, is a budding witch who’s thrown head-first into the supernatural world. That’s a bit tough when you’re trying to stabilize your marriage. She’s still learning to deal with it, but she’s coming into her own. 😉

Do you or have you belonged to a writing organization? Which one? Have the helped you with your writing? How?

Yes. I’ve belonged to Marketing for Romance Writers, a few indie groups, the Rose Trellis critique group, and various chapters of the RWA. They helped me in some ways. In others ways, I’m still trying to unlearn some mistakes their advice led to but that’s to be expected, when not all advice can be applied to all people.

When Your Muse Takes A Vacation by Gemma Juliana

288px-Muse_reading_Louvre_CA2220_2 Shortly after New Year’s Day, my muse decided to go for an extended vacation without telling me. She has stopped in here and there, but hasn’t come back yet.

There have been a few days in the interim when things flowed as if she were here. Writing was fluid. I was tempted to buy into the thought she was back. My intuition was right, though. Like a child away at summer camp who returns home for a week before going off to another event, she soon left again. I’m not even trying to write a new book. My goal is to edit and rewrite two novels started long ago. I work on them even without her, but it isn’t as much fun.

So, I’m attending to all the non-writing tasks on my to-do list. I put off writing one week at a time, until I can’t stand it and delve in again.

I’m not afraid she’s gone for good. Life has been intense lately, and I have no doubt that contributed to her fleeing for lighter pastures for a while.

A wise woman once said to me, “If your well runs dry you can’t nurture others, so give yourself permission to nurture yourself on a regular basis.”

So I make time to go to lunch with friends, enjoy my weekly breakfast date with my husband, go to the part with my sons and grandson, enjoy chocolates, fancy coffees and a glass of wine. Most of all, I laugh as much as I can.

Some writers swear by music, aromatherapy, massage, exercising, and travel to coax the muse back. It seems to differ for each of us.

What do you do when your muse deserts you? And, since Mother’s Day is around the corner, I’d love to know what you do to nourish yourself.

An Interview with K. L. Docter

Thanks for inviting me to your blog today, Cynthia. I’m looking forward to chatting with you and your readers! I’m so glad to be here in fact, that two of the commenters today will each receive an ecopy of Killing Secrets.

killing_secrets(1)_2What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write two different kinds of romance novels…romantic suspense writing as K.L. Docter and contemporary romance as Karen Docter.
I started out writing sweet, traditional romances, and then spicier short contemporaries. I now write cute and spicy contemporaries with a kick of humor. I love writing about real men and women with dreams and goals that don’t allow for a relationship just so I can throw them in each other’s path…with a tickle and a smile. I released Satin Pleasures and Catch That Santa (novella) in 2012. I have another dozen of these lighthearted, feel good stories vying for attention in my head but I’m now splitting my time with my second love, suspense.
Over the years, I couldn’t help but notice there was often a suspense element in my stories that I couldn’t explore properly in the shorter (50,000+ words) contemporary length. There’s definitely no room for suspense in the more lighthearted stories I write now. Since I didn’t want to leave those elements behind completely, I decided to write my first romantic suspense. Killing Secrets, released last month, is the first of six novels in the Thorne’s Thorns series and tops out at 110,000 words. The longer length gave me the room I needed to tell a more complicated story. As with the contemporaries, I have more stories germinating in my head, but that number is closer to thirty.
I think I need a clone or two, so I can write faster. (Hmmm, maybe I should write science fiction, too! )

How likely are people you meet to end up in your next book?

At the risk of making everyone I meet run away the moment they see me, I’d have to say very likely. Like most authors, I’m an observer of life. I never know what sight or smell or taste or feeling will prompt a description or trait that I can use in one of my stories. I’d never completely base a character on a real person. However, a quirky personality trait that intrigues me or fits the character I’m building is fair game. It’s these little characteristics that make a person real and intriguing and believable. I want my characters to be just as real for my readers.

Do you have a view in your writing space? What does your space look like?

I have a lovely view of my garden and lower patio outside my office window. I’ve already begun my spring cleanup and planting, a mix of flowers and vegetables. My tomato plants are in planters next to the house. There’s a red maple at the edge of the patio and a cottonwood so it’s often shaded from the afternoon sun. A patio table and a lounge are available if it’s cool enough for me to sit outside and write.

I’ve converted a bedroom in my walk-out basement into my office. I’ve painted it in a bright yellow gold color (called Emperor’s Gold) that makes me feel like I’m writing in the sunshine, rain or shine, night or day. The room’s big enough to accommodate my desk and large table, an easy chair for my husband or guest, and my treadmill. There are three monitors on my desk and they’re usually displaying a dozen open tabs. My wonderful son-in-law put it all together with a docking station for my laptop so I can come and go as I want. There are times when I need to get outside and down to one monitor so I focus on writing. It’s too easy for me to get distracted by social media and other work.

What genres are you drawn to as a reader?

I’m an eclectic reader, although I’m often too busy to read as much as I’d like. Of course, I’m a huge romance fan. My favorites are romantic suspense, contemporary romance, and paranormal. I also love historical and Regencies. Some non-romance favorites are Tom Clancy, Ayn Rand, Clive Cussler, Michael Crichton, Robert Heinlein, Issacc Asimov, and numerous other greats of science fiction. I grew up on Perry Mason, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Ian Fleming. My library card growing up was my best friend.

Do you write under a pen name? Why or why not? How did you choose it?

I do have a pen name, although I also write under my own name. I wrote my contemporaries for years planning to use my real name, Karen Docter. When I began writing suspense, though, I decided I needed to write those under a pseudonym, K.L. Docter. The genres are both contemporary and I’m hoping readers will want to read all of my books, but I don’t want to confuse my readers either. If someone is looking for a book written by Karen Docter, they’re expecting a lighthearted romance, not danger and serial killers. The same applies to my suspense. I chose abbreviations for my pen name because I also want to make it easier for readers to find both of my genres under my last name, should they decide to do so.

What did you want to be when you were a child? Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?

It’s funny. I’ve always written things from journals to poetry to stories. But I didn’t think about writing as a living until I got to college. When I was a young kid, I wanted to be a hairdresser. I remember going to the hairdresser every week with my mom and watching it all in fascination. I even had a “job” when I was eight or nine years old. The salon owner paid me a few dollars for sweeping up hair and getting sodas and coffee for her clients. When I was then, though, I decided I wanted to be a policeman after an incident in my neighborhood that made me very aware of the injustices in the world. When I hit high school, I decided to be a kindergarten teacher. I “fell” into writing in college. I had to have a writing class and everything was full except a journalism class. That one class changed my life forever.

satin_pleasures_final (1)_2All self-pubbed books are rumored to be shoddily edited. What do you say to that?

The operative word is “all.” I’ll admit there are a number of poorly edited self-published books sitting on the cyber shelves today. But, there are well-edited books as well. I know a number of self-published authors who do a wonderful job of presenting a professional product. If they don’t know how to do something, they hire a professional to do it for them. This is smart business.
I’m a self-published author and I work very hard to “finish” my books professionally. I have a journalism degree, edited a news magazine, and taught college level English composition, but I still have my material critiqued by at least half a dozen other people before I print my book. I hire someone to do my book covers, to format my books.
Self-publishing is still in its infancy, but it’s a growing market. It’s here to stay. Over time, authors who aren’t making every effort to present a professional product will have a hard time hanging on because readers are smart. They’ll gravitate to those writers who can give them what they want.

Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

The most rewarding thing for me is knowing my stories are resonating with readers on some level, whether it’s because I made them sigh or laugh out loud reading my contemporaries or look over their shoulder or gasp if they hear something go bump in the night as they read my suspense. It’s gratifying when I receive a note from a reader who forgets where she is, the troubles of her day, while reading one of my stories.

Headshot_Dallas_2What’s next for you?

I’m currently writing book two in the Thorne’s Thorns series, Killing Proof. Patrick Thorne (Killing Secrets, Book 1) grew up with five foster brothers, and the second book is Ben Zancanelli’s story. It’s scheduled to release in October 2014.
Thanks again for having me, Cynthia!

Excerpt

Four weeks….
Two days….
Sixteen hours….
…‘Til death.

The first time he laid eyes on her, he stood on the threshold of a doorway he dare not cross. He fell into her fathomless dark gaze, unable, unwilling to shake his soul free and, in that one moment, he knew.
She was meant for him to love.
Untouched by the sordid life that flourished around her, she was sunlight in a gray existence. A smile in a dingy room. A joy such as he’d never known. She was a gift from a cold, unforgiving God. Forever innocent.
Why God would give him such a precious angel, he didn’t know. But he suddenly knew what he was willing to die for. What he’d kill for.
In that instant of clarity the monster that lurked in the dark recesses of his mind was freed. A creature designed to kill. To live and die. Over and over again. Until his angel ascended once more to her place in Heaven at God’s feet where he couldn’t reach her.
‘Til death parted them, she was his and his alone.
Certain she’d been lost to him, the shock of spotting her again in LoDo, a lower downtown section of Denver, nearly brought him to his knees. His brain tried to tell him he was mistaken. She had more curves than he remembered. Her hairstyle and clothes were different.
The others were different, too.
He shook his head against the monster’s treacherous whisper. He refused to listen. Couldn’t listen. His angel smiled at him. His soul recognized her. Somehow, some way, his fractious God had been appeased and given him yet another chance.
The past seven days were hell. Watching her. Wanting to take her. Knowing he couldn’t screw up and lose her again. Tonight, his preparations in place, she’d return to his side where she belonged.
Breathing slow and measured through the full-face ski mask he’d bought at a thrift store, he sucked in a lungful of musty stench. In this uncommon late-May heat wave, he was sweating bullets but the wool soaked it up before it could sting his eyes. The itching would drive him insane, though, if she didn’t come home from work soon.
The LoDo sports bar where she waited tables closed almost an hour ago. She couldn’t have gone on a date at two o’clock on a Thursday morning, could she?
Three times he’d entered her ground floor apartment after she’d left for work, and he’d seen no sign she was involved with anyone. No jockey shorts mixed with her panties in the hamper. No extra razor. The food in the refrigerator wasn’t enough to feed a cat, let alone her and a boyfriend, and the only scent on her pillows was floral. The sole message from a male on her answering machine had identified himself as a special research librarian from the Denver Public Library reminding her to pick up the copy of “The Warwick Genealogy” she’d requested.
That doesn’t mean she isn’t still involved with him, the almighty scion of Thorne Enterprises. She’s probably crawling into his bed like a whore right this minute, letting him do things to her, making her scream….
Screams.
Blood.
Death.
“No! Stop!” he whispered. “That was a mistake!”
Was it? The insidious question lashed him from the dark place in his pounding skull.
He rejected the smirking voice, the vivid images. Think of something else. Anything else. Forgetforgetfor—

trilogy_cover_full_for_web_2The Powerful First Three Books of the Erotic Sci-Fi Romance Series: The Ozera Wars

Imagine…A planet divided along two lines — magic vs. technology. A society of women warriors who rule their continents with the most advanced weapons and technology in the quadrant. The Daughters of The House of Moons escaped from magical and sexual slavery over seven hundred years ago, but now produce Ozera Potent, a chemical weapon used suppress their own people, and to sexually enslave others.

Imagine…A race of powerful sorcerers, who have had enough of the female Moon Warriors taking them hostage, stealing their seed, and then murdering their brothers.

Let the battle begin…

ROGUE’S DESTINY (Book 1) Hana is the second daughter of the House of Moons, sister to the Queen, and revered scholar of Anthea. Everything she believes about her people, and about herself, is a lie.

Kiel Lonriev, Prince of Melos, left his home on a rescue mission. Captured by powerful Anthean elders, he knows death is preferable to the torture ahead.

Only she can save him…

Only he can show her the truth…

Their forbidden union will violently alter the course of their planet’s future.

QUEEN’S DESTINY (Book 2) A strange message from a kidnapped friend sends Charla, next in line to the throne of Anthea, away from home in search of answers on the dangerous and scintillating Space Station Tantra 9. ‘T9’ is famous for illegal deeds, sexual slavery, and sales of everything imaginable, including the highly prized aphrodisiac Ozera Potent supplied by her people. But she gets too close to her prey and a sorceress from her own planet, an enemy, will take control of her mind and memories, sending her on another mission entirely…to track down and protect one of the most feared men from her home world, the bastard prince Padraic, pirate, rebel, and blood enemy.

Padraic Lonriev is on a mission of his own. His beloved younger sister was kidnapped by slavers, his niece murdered, and the Crown Sentinals in charge of their protection have both mysteriously vanished. He’s determined to find his sister and her abductors, and he has no time for a meddling, naive Moon Warrior from Anthea no matter how attractive or deadly. Trouble is Charla is the only link he has to his missing sister. If he loses the trail now, he might never get it back. Now all he has to do is seduce the fierce female warrior without getting himself killed in the process…or falling in love.

WARRIOR’S DESTINY (Book 3) Princess and powerful sorceress, Kamara Lonriev went to great lengths to escape her planet undetected to hunt her cousin’s killer. After months of posing as the Slave Empress, the notorious and highest priced courtesan on Tantra 9, her prey draws near, unable to resist her promised perversions, or the deep well of her magic, power the evil parasite needs to sustain his immortal life.

Royal Crown Sentinel Tobiath is being hunted for a murder he did not commit. He walks and no one sees him. He watches and none notice his presence. He infiltrates spy rings, executes criminals, hunts the truth… and no one remembers his face. To his people, he is less than an insect, less than a ghost. Spy and assassin for his government, he is immune to magic. And so he moves, flows, and drifts anywhere and everywhere. Unseen and forgotten.

Blood bound to his charge at her birth, Tobiath is the only one who knows the truth, the princess’s cousin is still very much alive, prisoner of an ancient and malevolent enemy. Honor bound to both rescue his charge and save the headstrong Kamara from her own machinations, he infiltrates the Slave Empress’s lair and takes her captive. Evil hunts them both. Tobiath can’t afford distractions. But how can he resist a woman he would die to possess, but is forbidden to touch?

redeemed_by_a_rebel_2What am I working on?
Editing Healed by a Heart and writing Seduced by a Sinner

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
My works are shorter, usually running around 45K

Why do I write what I do?
I like reading westerns, always have, but when I decided to pursue writing all those years ago, my mom’s story about how she met my dad inspired me. It couldn’t have been anything other than a western, since they met on a ranch.

How does your writing process work?
I’m a pantser, so basically I get an idea, make a few notes about the characters and the plot and then start writing. I write until I get stuck, somewhere around the middle, then I sit down with my critique partners and discuss where the book should be headed and maybe some scenes to get it there.

Cindy 12.04.2013 200x300BIO

Cynthia Woolf is the author of six historical western romance books and one short story with more books on the way. She was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia’s father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similiarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she’s made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

I’m Victoria Adams. I live in Ontario, Canada with my husband and house full of pets. Daughter has grown up and is now teaching. I like to garden, cook and belly dance. I’ve been writing since I was little. Being an only child, long car rides were filled with making up stories in my head about the people I saw out the car window.

What genres do you write and why?

I write new adult and contemporary romance and contemporary flash fiction. Why? Well the why is attached to why I write that style and why I write. I’ve always written. Telling sotries was something I have always been able to do. I taught high school for a long – a Looooong time – and one day one of my gr 12 students complained that there was nothing for her to read. This was pre-Twilight. So I wrote a book for her – Dancing in Circles.

In my flash fiction, I have been venturing into contemporary fantasy, contemporary time travel. Experimenting so to speak.

Tell us about your current series.

Dancing in Circles. One born into privilege and a charmed life surrounded by love and family. The other born to a life of violence on the streets as the solemn gang leader of the notorious Shoresmen. A young, idealistic co-ed, Julie, meets a jaded, cold gang member, Robert, and cracks his icy shell, allowing the warmth of her love to awaken his soul.

Circles Divided Is the love of a girl from wealthy Westland and a street punk from the slums of the Shore strong enough to surpass all that life will throw at them and forge a life together? Is Julie willing to sacrifice her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer for the man she loves? Is Robert willing to lay down his ties to the gang in order to hold onto his new found love? Sacrifices must be made, but will they be enough?VA-CDivided-432x648_with_tats_2

Heartbroken that her love affair didn’t end with the fairy tale Happily Ever After, Julie leaves town to pursue her dream of being a dancer. As fate has a curious sense of humor, eight years later, they wake up in bed together. Now it is up to love to fix what time cannot mend.

Do you have any rejection stories to share?

Lol – yea. Back in the Stone Age days when authors submitted paper submissions to agents, I sent out – over time – hundreds – and was rejected by all. Many asked for the full manuscript of Dancing in Circles and all said the said thing. Loved the book, but it’s too old for YA and too young for contemporary. I chatted with agents who asked me to either make my characters 3 or 4 years – younger or older.

But I’d written this for a 17 year old and I left Julie’s and Robert’s ages what they were.
Skip forward in time due to life considerations, I got back into writing and decided to indie published Dancing in Circles and then a few years later the genre NA – new adult became popular.
Unfortunately I wrote a genre that didn’t exist. Now, I’ll stick to being an indie.

All self-pubbed books are rumoured to be shoddily edited. What do you say to that?

I’d say a bunch of snobs should get over themselves and quit being terrified of the competition.
Google – editing mistakes in Twilight. Editing mistakes in 50 Shades of Grey. And for the holy grail – editing mistakes in Harry Potter.
I’ve seen editing boo-boos in Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Rex Stout and those books were published in the day when books went through several editors.

What did you want to be when you were a child? Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?

I wanted to be a cowboy, but then someone pointed out I had to be a boy. So I swiched to nurse, because they wore cool clothes. Then I learned about needles, blood and bed pans and moved on. I never thought about being a writer. Being an author is what Agatha Christie did. I just wrote stories.

Do you prefer to read in the same genres you write in or do you avoid reading that genre? Why?

I don’t read NA or contemporary romance – other than all the wonderful mss that I critique or beta. And I have read lots of wonderful works.
I love mysteries. Old English mysteries. I love to curl up next to the woodstove with a hot chocolate and get lost in some English manor – with a dead body in it.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

A Guy and A Girl is the working title of my next project, but I’ve used that title for so long, it’s beginning to stick. I am in the middle of edits from my beta and am hoping to have a summer release date.

Do you have any free promotions you’d like to tell us about?
Yes, to one lucky commenter, I will send a free ecopy of Dancing in Circles – if they like NA or Circles Interlocked – if they like contemporary romance. The commenter has to tell me one. Oh, and leave your email address.

Julie’s fingers trembled as she opened the envelope.

Hi,
If you’re reading this then something went wrong and I guess I’m dead. Sorry. But that’s only one more screw up to add to my list. I’ve messed things up a lot in this relationship. Why do people who should never be together fall in love?
I should’ve never met you and I certainly shouldn’t have fallen in love with you, but I did. I never stopped loving you once in the years we were apart. Telling you this now seems a little stupid, I guess I should’ve done it before I let you go back to Langston.
A long time ago – in high school – we had to write an assignment for our last English essay. You and I had broken up and everyone was mad at me for being such a bastard. For my essay, I handed in a poem. Yea me, I wrote a poem. Mrs. Wolmsely liked it – hell, she gave me an “A”.
She wanted to read it in class. She was hoping you’d forgive me. Which is exactly what I didn’t want. I wanted you to go dance. I wanted you to live out your dream. I’m sorry I screwed up on that. Anyway, this is my poem. I’ve revised it a bit. It was only two verses long then. I wanted to call it LOVE SUCKS, but I didn’t think Mrs. Wolmsely would like that.
She possessed my being –
Gave me a future –
A life.
Our souls intertwined –
Fantasies fulfilled

But
Reality intruded.
One’s dream realized
One’s destroyed.
A heart broken
The pain –
Where a heart should be
A void existed.
The expanse of days
Became years.
A dream withered.

By chance –
Two faces meet
And smile
Lips touch
Love strikes once more.

My being possessed –
Desires fulfilled –
A dream revived.
A future
With Love!

I don’t know why I told you all this. All I wanted to do is tell you I love you, but it seemed cold and impersonal on paper. Please don’t grieve for me. Remember our good times together. Forget the bad stuff. Have a happy life, full of love and joy.
With Love,
R
