The Book I didn’t expect to write by Nikki Lynn Barrett

Hi everyone! Cynthia, thank you for letting me be a guest on your blog today!

Amazon_2 Welcome to November! At this time last year, I was gearing up to release my debut book, The Secret Santa Wishing Well. November 17 marks the end of my first year in publishing. My fourth and latest upcoming release is another Christmas title, called On the 12th Date of Christmas. This book…I didn’t expect it. Had no idea I’d be writing it. It’s the ‘follow up’ to Secret Santa.

My beta reader was the first one to ‘hint’ at a story for one of Secret Santa’s secondary characters. Her name is Robin, and she is a very important person in Cheyenne and her children’s lives. When the book came out, I had a few more people want more! So, I thought and thought some more. I think it might have been January when I asked “So who wants more of the Secret Santa characters in a story for Robin?” From the enthusiastic response, I knew what I had to do.

I knew it wasn’t going to be writing the story until at least the summer for a fall release. It gave me time to think about it. I had to give the story the same feeling I did in Secret Santa.

I kept struggling with a story for Robin. Then I was having a conversation with my husband, who is a very big supporter in my writing career. Often times over dinner we plot out stories. I told him I wasn’t sure if there’d be a follow up this year or not. I couldn’t come up with a story for Robin. So we came up with different ideas, and the gears started rolling around in my head.

It took a little more plotting and planning, but the story idea came to me.

And in a little more than a week, On the 12th Date of Christmas will be released.

My betas and early ARC review team has been loving the story so far! I have a friend who I’ve known since 2005 that is reading it and it’s her first taste of one of my books…She’s normally a sci/fi fantasy reader and she’s really enjoying the book.

Oh, and that beta reader that first suggested Robin’s story has planted another idea in my head. So….there’s more of these characters to come. Tune in mid 2014 for details on that one!

I love my job!

secretsantacover_2Thanks for following me along today! I’d love to give away a copy of my debut, The Secret Santa Wishing Well. One lucky commenter gets an e-copy of the story.

Blurb:

After being mugged, Robin Sorenson is left shaken and her spirit in humanity broken. Worse, she’s not sure how to deal with the new anxieties or who to confide in since she’s always preached to pick oneself up and move on. Yeah, she’s been the go to girl when anyone’s had problems.
Christmas is coming, and her belief in magic and miracles has faded.

Then Jonas comes back.

Jonas Aimes made a mistake. A big one, when he walked away from Robin a year earlier. He’d loved her, always had and still does, but his desire to please his aging and strict parents took precedence. Back from the overseas internship they’d struggled to get him in, he plans on winning Robin back. What he didn’t count on was discovering the shell of the vivacious woman he’d loved.

Broken.

Remembering her love of Christmas, Jonas pulls the holiday heartstrings. What? All is fair and love and war. Right?

Twelve days, Twelve Dates.

Robin is speechless when Jonas not only refuses to leave her alone, but dares her to accept his cheesy holiday themed challenge. Twelve dates to give him a chance to prove he loves her and is never leaving her again.

But in the season known for miracles can Robin find the magic needed to open her heart and faith once more…or will she forever wonder about the ghost of the Christmas past that could have been?(

EXCERPT:
Robin nodded and focused, taking another picture. “Yup. I’m going to send him a picture text. Of himself.” She giggled, punching the appropriate buttons on her phone to do the task. “I don’t know how soon he’ll check it.”

“Can I help you ladies?” A spiky haired, scrawny man stood behind them now, eyes narrowed. Robin straightened her spine. Ah, but they must look a little suspicious.

“No. Just ready to embarrass my boyfriend.” She cracked a grin. Whoa. She’d said boyfriend. Well, that made the most sense to tell the guy, as he already stared at them with a frown. He probably wondered just what mischief they were up to.

“Is he the Santa unknowingly having his picture taken by you?” The frown on the guy’s face disappeared as the corners of his lips twitched.

“Absolutely. And I just sent him the picture, too.” Robin stuck her phone back in her pocket, stealing another glance over at Jonas. At any time, he would pull out his phone to pretend to check the time, when he’d really be peeking at his texts. At this time, there were no kids around him, as they all scurried off with their families. Any second now. And boom. The moment she’d been waiting for. The quick sneak into his pocket, pulling the phone out slightly. Then he snapped his head up, searching searching his surroundings. She tried to back up, ended up bumping Cheyenne which caught them both off guard. That only caused a bigger distraction and Jonas caught sight of them. He smiled and waved.

“Well, he’s on to you now.” The guy smirked.

“Yes, I’ve already noticed that. We’ll be going now. Have a great day.” Robin tugged on Cheyenne’s sleeve, pulling her away. They both burst into laughter as they approached Jonas. “That was a bit embarrassing!” She whispered to Cheyenne, who nodded. Heat rushed to her cheeks. Cheyenne’s were red as she stifled another giggle.

“Ho ho ho!” He said cheerfully. “Santa doesn’t appreciate sneaky women taking pictures of him. You two are on the naughty list this year.” His eyes sparkled with laughter as he couldn’t take them off of Robin.

“I’m shaking in my boots.” Robin shivered for effect. She looked him up and down. “You’ve gained a lot of weight since I saw you last. What in the world is in your diet?” She poked at his fake pudgy belly, laughing at the way he pushed her hand away.

“Hey! Santa does not appreciate naughty girls poking at his belly, either!”

“Boy, Santa doesn’t appreciate much this year, does he? Have a little cheer! No more of your grumbling.” Robin cracked, elbowing Cheyenne as they both laughed.

Jonas reached into his pocket and handed her a dime. “Here, why not make a wish? Then be on your merry old way and leave this Santa to his work.” A gentle laugh came from his lips. Robin knew he enjoyed this just as much.

“Can I wish myself off the naughty list?” Robin batted her eyelashes at him, edging closer to the well and prepared to drop the coin in.

“It doesn’t work that way, young lady. Santa loves the flirting, but you’re still on the list.” Jonas said close to her ear. How many more times could he get another shiver out of her?

“Darn.” She feigned a sad face, then dropped the coin in after thinking of a wish. “Despite your pudgy belly, you make a really hot Santa.” She backed away from him with a smile.

“Santa will be calling you with details for your second date.” Jonas used a deep rumbling voice.

“I’ll be looking forward to it. Have a good day, Santa.” Robin waved at him. Her spirits lifted as she walked away with Cheyenne. A few feet away, they looked at one another and burst into laughter.

Happy Halloween by Jesse Kimmel-Freeman

Happy Halloween, EVERYONE! This is my absolutely FAVORITE holiday! No, wait, I’m supposed to say Hi first. Hi, everyone. It’s Jesse Kimmel-Freeman here! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

1277724_10151720728012972_1008518887_o_2This year is especially fun because my son is 5 and my daughter is 2, so I cannot wait until tonight when we are out trick or treating! We have our costumes already! My son is being a ninja!

My daughter is being the cutest little witch EVER!

Speaking of witches, Happy New Year to all the witches out there. May this new year bring you a full heart and belly, and enough good times to help you through whatever comes your way!
This year to get in the mood for Halloween, I decided to take on a small project that kept me up for nights unable to go to sleep at night. You see… I am a fraidy cat. No, that doesn’t even begin to explain the epic levels of fear that I can create with my overactive imagination. I found 13 common urban legends and retold them so they were more like real stories. I’m sure you’re like rue_2“Urban legends, pfft, I eat those for breakfast!” Yeah, well, I don’t. I don’t read scary stories, watch scary movies- na da! I am freaking scared! LOL. So this task was UBER hard and fun. It was really fun to see the common themes in urban legends- man, I must admit they are seriously sexist! And everyone in them are just plain stupid! No, that isn’t fair… they aren’t stupid (I don’t like that word), they are the most naive and gullible people in existence. Did that make writing the scary stories any easier? Oh, heck no! I actually had to wake up my husband several times just to take me to the bathroom or to turn on the light in the closet of the bedroom. Yes, I really am that bad!

So I hope that if you tell scary stories as part of your Halloween, remember some of us are just plain chicken and it isn’t nice to tease! LOL. So for you out there that love a quick read that might cause you to reconsider that creak in the house, I’ve made Don’t Be Afraid: 13 Urban Legends Retold free for today only. Here is the Amazon link http://amzn.com/B00FVQCK6K.

brody (1)_2I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween! Remember this is the time when the veil is thinnest, so try not to upset the ghosts and spirits of the past that might be lingering near you!

AuthorSnapshot (1)_2About Jesse:
Jesse has studied anthropology and used her “education” as an excuse to hang out with vampires- her masters’ thesis was going to be modern vampire culture. They really do exist. Vampires have been her obsession since she was about five years old when she swears she was bitten by one.

She enjoys reading and writing. But most importantly being a crazy mom to her son, new daughter, and ever growing pet family. Singing silly songs at the top of her lungs and embarrassing her son is one of her favorite activities. She considers herself to be an odd duck.

Werewolves are Great for Halloween! By Terry Spear

Werewolves are Great for Halloween!
By Terry Spear

seal_wolf_xmas-300_2Or… Christmas, Thanksgiving, oh, heck, when they’re hot and hunky, they’re great anytime, don’t you think?

That’s what I think. I’ve never written a werewolf book set at Christmastime. Thanksgiving, yes! For the Silver wolf pack, they had to solve a crime and it happened during the big pack Thanksgiving gathering. But I had never written any kind of a Christmas story, soooo, my editor asked me if I’d like to write A SEAL Wolf Christmas? And I was like, YES!!!!

I love the Oregon Coast SEAL wolves and I had written two of the stories already, To Tempt the Wolf, where Hunter Greymere is a SEAL wolf, and then he was a team leader for three others. So for the next story, I had the perfect couple in mind. In A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing, Hunter’s sister, Meara, and one of his teammates, Finn Emerson, have a conflictive beginning right away. She’s known him forever and no way, Jose, is she ever getting involved with a SEAL. Period. Never. Ever.

But he arrives after one of their team is hurt and he can’t get hold of Hunter, who he’s trying to warn about the dangerous situation. He’s off with his mate in Hawaii on a honeymoon, and Meara is home alone, intending to rent out the beach cottages to single, alpha male wolves only, and find one she’d really like to court.

Finn’s arrival doesn’t help at all. In the midst of all this, we have Bjornolf Jorgenson, who is a real ghost of a SEAL, as in ghosts the mission. And he and one of Hunter’s female undercover operatives end up in a real sparring session, where he ties her to her hotel room bed—with her own pantyhose!!!, and Hunter has to rescue her. Now, that story was just begging to be told. So when Deb asked about A SEAL Wolf Christmas, I totally forgot that I had to write Jaguar Fever first. (I had 6 other books contracted at the time.)

Huntress_for_Hire_new_1950_2And I jumped right on it. I had the most fun with it. Went from writing a word on the page, to 96,000 in record time. Some stories are just meant to be told. And the Christmas theme was sooo much fun.

Here’s an excerpt from A SEAL Wolf Christmas showing the mystery, the murder, the Christmas, humor, and the romance:

She had to admit Bjornolf was good for a rescue. She was also glad they had their own vehicles at the Christmas tree farm. That way she didn’t have to hear his guff all the drive back to the cottage about why she shouldn’t have gone alone tonight.

What she didn’t expect was for him to escort her through the parking lot, walk her all the way to her car, pull her into a hard embrace and kiss her like they were newlyweds. Long and penetrating, hard and gentle and every kind of delicious kiss in between. He finally released her and dragged in a breath of cold air. His heart was pounding furiously, his breath short, puffs of white vapor floating between them.

“Damn but you taste good, Anna,” he said, softly, his eyes dark with feral need as he rubbed her arms. The heat sizzled through her blood beneath the jacket and sweater she wore.

“He better be watching us,” Anna warned in a whisper, but she didn’t mean it. She loved the way he kissed.

Bjornolf gave her a devilish smile and a quick kiss on her cold nose, his mouth hot against her skin. “Follow you home, honey.” He pulled her door open and once she climbed in, he closed it for her. She waited for him to enter his own vehicle and start the engine before she drove off.

Anna assumed as soon as she parked and Bjornolf followed her into the house, that they’d talk. What she didn’t expect was that she’d wait for him to walk her to the door, even allowing him to take her hand as if they were wolves on a date.

What was wrong with her? With him?

They didn’t need to pretend to anyone here.

Bjornolf didn’t say a word, just held her hand possessively and escorted her to the porch. Then he unlocked the door and closed and locked it behind them.

“Did you want some cocoa?” he asked, as if he didn’t want the night to end.

She shook her head. “You have to go with Nathan to buy Christmas ornaments tomorrow.”

She saw a flash of disappointment cross his face. She was surprised he hadn’t said a word about her investigating the crime scene on her own.

She remembered the dog tags in her pocket and pulled them out. “I found these right before Stanton came across me.” She glanced down at them and read the inscription. “Thomas Cremer. The other dead man, maybe?”

Bjornolf wasn’t looking at the dog tags when his gaze met hers. He’d been observing her face with a mixture of respect and astonishment. “Now I know why Hunter recommended you for this job.”

She gave Bjornolf a slight smile, appreciating his comment more than a little.

He took the tags and examined them, sniffing them. “The second dead body we smelled.”

“Yes,” she said solemnly. “The man had also been in the service.”

“I’ll let Hunter know in the morning. Guess we ought to turn in.” He looked hopeful that she’d say he could join her in her bed.

She gave him a quick smile and headed down the hall before she changed her mind. “Night, Bjorn.” She called him the shortened version of his name that he’d given the man at the tree farm, as a humorous touch.

“Night, honey,” Bjornolf said as if they truly were newlyweds, and he’d be joining her in bed shortly.

************************
So, what do you think about the two of them? From the beginning when he tied her to a hotel room on a mission, and now to this? Would YOU like to be Anna, and why?

I’ll be giving away a print copy of A SEAL Wolf Christmas to a US address only. If a winner is International, I can substitute an ebook copy of Huntress for Hire, another suitable “Halloween” book that is all about hunting vampires and more! Romance, mystery, humor, murder… the usual.

Thanks to Cindy for having me here today, and for those who celebrate Halloween, Happy Halloween!

Interview with Geri Foster

Please help me welcome Geri Foster to my blog today. She’s got a great interview for us.

3NIGHT_COVER_2Tell us about yourself.

I live in North Texas with my Hubby and a pesky dog named Lola. I write full time and enjoy my eleven grandchildren.

Tell us about your current series/WIP.

I just recently published the third book in my Falcon Securities Series, and in November I’ll be releasing three short novellas in my Accidental Pleasures Series. They are erotic romance that I refer to as short, cute and sexy.

Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

I wish I knew where my ideas come from I’d turn off the facet. I have so many ideas for stories I can’t possible live long enough to write them all. I always begin with the Inciting Incident. That’s the location and what’s at stake. I develop a story promise, which means in the first page I’m going to bring up a situation that the reader will ask, is this going to work and in the end will the story be complete.

What is your least favorite part of writing?

Editing! I love to freely write the story just so see how it flows. It’s the cleaning up that I struggle with.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

A very successful Indie Author gave me a piece of advice. It’s all about inventory. Keep putting out the next book.

All self-pubbed books are rumoured to be shoddily edited. What do you say to that?

I think that happens, but it’s not the general rule. I honestly think some people like to bash someone else’s writing. I’ve even heard it from Indie Authors. I refer to them as the mean girls of Indie. But, everyone who is Self-pubbed needs a good editor. Shop around until you find one.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I used to be a plotter then I learned once I knew how the story ended, I didn’t want to write it. Now I sit down and write the story in my head. Close to the end, I decide what has to happen to tie up the story. That makes it fresh for me.

What do you have planned for the future?

I plan to write the fourth book in the Falcon Series, start a new Series called the Covenant of Justice, and a the Witch and Warlock Series.

How far do you plan ahead?

Two years. I try to stick to my deadlines so my readers get a steady supply of my writing. I keep to my plan as much as possible, but we all know that story has to pop into your head before you can write it.

Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?

I’ve been writing forever, so I say, don’t ever give up. I know you hear that all the time, but stay with it. If you really want to be a published, and you remain true to your craft, it will happen.

What’s next for you?

Finish up editing my Accidental Pleasures Series, write Jake’s story for the Falcon Series, sum up my Justice Series and get two books out, then write two books in my Witches and Warlock series. Hopefully by the end of next year.

30998_440751315986804_1999557828_n[1]_2Bio
As long as she can remember, Geri Foster has been a lover of reading and the written words. In the seventh grade she wore out two library cards and had read every book in her age area of the library. After raising a family and saying good-bye to the corporate world, she tried her hand at writing.
Action, intrigue, danger and sultry romance drew her like a magnet. That’s why she has no choice but to write action-romance suspense. While she reads every genre under the sun, she’s always been drawn to guns, bombs and fighting men. Secrecy and suspense move her to write edgy stories about daring and honorable heroes who manage against all odds to end up with their one true love.

IT’S ALWAYS HALLOWEEN ON A SPACE STATION – by Vijaya Schartz

Akira_medium_2Imagine a woman Samurai bounty hunter, walking the space station promenade in full black armor and protruding steel and plasma blades, with a cheetah trained to retrieve fugitives. Well, this is my heroine, Akira, and it’s not Halloween, although some of the aliens out there might look a little strange. This is just daily business on Borealis, a decrepit space station at the fringe of conquered space. Yep. We are in the 2600s and man has spread throughout the galaxies. There is a war going on, and the rebel planets are gaining on the dictatorial Transplanetary Protectorate.

Bounty hunter Akira Karyudo knew something didn’t add up when she accepted her assignment. Why would the Trans Planetary Protectorate want a kidnapped orphan dead or alive?

She will get to the truth once she finds the boy, and the no good SOB who snatched him from a psychiatric hospital. With her cheetah, Freckles, a genetically enhanced feline retriever, Akira sets out to flush them out of the bowels of the BOREALIS space station. But when she finds her fugitives, the man is not what she expects.

Markku, a decorated rebel soldier, only protects his nephew from the authorities, who performed painful experiments on the boy. Stuck on Borealis, he hides the child. But how can he shield him from the horribly dangerous conditions in the lawless sublevels of the decrepit space station?

Akira faces the worst moral dilemma of her career. Law or justice, duty or love. She can’t have it both ways.

EXCERPT 1 – First meeting:

Two thugs stalked away to follow the cheetah.

“Go after that cat and you’re dead!” The strong baritone voice came from a tall man aiming a blaster at the two hoodlums.

He stepped out of the shadows, in full paramilitary gear. His left hand held a long knife. He sidled toward Akira, circling the thugs, who started to retreat at the sight of his blaster.

“Mind your own business.” Akira didn’t appreciate unwanted help.

The man stepped closer. “These goons know nothing about civilized rules of fighting. They want your body, your hide, your cat for its meat, and your armor and weapons.”

“I know that.” Who did this man think she was? A neophyte? “There is no honor in killing defenseless creatures.”

“There is no honor in this place.” His gaze skimmed the sorry lot holding an assortment of blades and clubs, some with protruding metal spikes. “Believe me, they are far from defenseless.”

The thugs kept their distance from the blaster aimed at them, but they did not retreat.

“Still. I refuse to kill if there is another way.” None of those rejects would threaten her individually, but their number could present a challenge. As more joined the group, she counted two dozen.

The louts glanced at one another with indecision. At least, they understood the warning. She was trained and dangerous. Not to be trifled with. They widened their half circle in front of her, still hesitating, but they held their ground. Chikusho.

In a few long steps, the stranger joined her side. From his walk and the way he held his weapons, she could tell he had military training. He didn’t look like a TPP soldier, though. Something wild lurked in his clear blue gaze. A free thinker. A bounty hunter like her? Or perhaps a rebel?

“You look like you could use some help.”

“Do I?” Unbelievable. “Why should I trust you?” She couldn’t help the derision in her voice. “For all I know, you could be their leader, luring me into a trap.”

He chuckled and shook his head. “I’m not one of them, and you are in more trouble than you know.”

“Get out of my way.” Akira clicked open the metal claws of her forearm braces then unsheathed a titanium short sword and adopted a defensive stance. “I work alone.”

He laughed. “And I’m telling you, this is no place for a warrior from a distant past. Especially, one who cares about something as futile as honor.”

EXCERPT 2 – The kiss:

Ever so gently, he brought his face closer to hers, his gaze fixed on her lips. She’d secretly dreamed of this moment. How could she deny him? Her entire being yearned for his kiss.

Her desire betrayed her, and her mouth opened slightly, then his lips brushed hers, soft, tentative at first. He nibbled her lower lip, making her want him even more. A soft moan escaped her. Akira’s consciousness hinged on their gentle kiss.

Then, as if on cue, he drew her tight against him and claimed her mouth, imperious and fierce, like the warrior he was. She let him ravage her, enjoying his male scent, his strong will and determination. Warmth flooded her body. She tingled all over with life, and the awareness of him.

Unable to remain passive any longer, she responded in kind. The places where their bodies touched burned with fire. Her hands cradled his head, her body arched closer, as if to melt into his. By the golden rays of Amaterasu, she didn’t know a kiss could be so powerful.

An Interview with Allegra Gray

Please help me welcome Allegra Gray to my blog today. Allegra is honoring us with the cover reveal for her next book, THE DEVIL’S BARGAIN.

AllegraGray_NothingButTrouble_800px_2If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be, and why?

Well, I love my home overlooking the mountains. I’m really lucky. So, I wouldn’t necessarily want to live somewhere else, but I DO wish I could teleport myself…that way I could see the world and still come home to Colorado.

Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?

Oh, yeah. I was an active duty officer in the U.S. Air Force, have taught college English, managed contracts in the Middle East, am currently a landlord, and even (long ago) been a computer game tester. I still work in the defense industry as well…though if some of my carefully-laid plans come to fruition, I hope to have more time to focus on writing soon!

How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite?

I’ve written 4 books. 3 are available now; the 4th will be out before Christmas. My favorite is always the one I’m about to write next.

Tell us about your current series/WIP.

I just finished my “Daring Damsels” trilogy with the publication of Nothing But Trouble last month. I really enjoyed working on that book…one of my favorite secondary characters, Charity Medford, finally gets her own story. It was challenging, though, because in the previous two novels, I subjected her to some pretty rough times, so by the time she gets her own story, she’s got some scars that she tries to hide under her normally-perky attitude. Basically, she’s suffering from what we would recognize today as PTSD, but since the novel is set in Regency England (and Scotland), there’s no such term. She’s afraid of people discovering her “madness” and condemning her for it. In a society where women’s behavior was strictly scrutinized, this puts her under some serious pressure. To show how she deals with that, and still has the courage to pursue life and love, was very satisfying.

Next up, I’m finishing some edits on a medieval romance that has been on the back burner for way too long, and then I’ll be working on a new trilogy…one that is unusual in that the books are set in different time periods, but are connected by some historical events and artifacts that play a role in the characters’ lives.

AllegraGray_TheDevilsBargain2_800px_2What is your next project and when will it be released?

My next project is a medieval romance called The Devil’s Bargain. It will be available in early December.

What is your writing routine like?

Usually I write for a couple hours each evening after the kids go to bed. On the rare weekend I don’t have tons of family commitments, I cloister myself in my office for hours. It’s not a lot of time, so I try to make good use of whatever time I get.

Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

Having readers come back asking for more. I still remember one message from a woman a few years ago who told me she had to keep sending her kids outside to play so that she could keep reading my book!

Allegra_Gray_2_2Where can readers find you?

Facebook is the best place to find me. I hang out there frequently (though slightly less on weekends or vacations). I also have a website, www.allegragray.com, where you can find info on my books, excerpts, and (sometimes) upcoming appearances.

Where can readers find your books? Print/Ebook?

See the links below. The first two books are available at all major ebook retailers. Nothing But Scandal is still available in paperback as well (Nothing But Deception is harder to find in paperback, though limited copies are available on Amazon). Nothing But Trouble, my latest release, is currently exclusive to Amazon as an ebook, but will be available at all major ebook retailers by mid-December.

Do you have any upcoming FREE promotions you would like to tell us about?

I will have some free promotions and a couple book giveaways coming up towards the holiday season. The best way to be the first to know about them is to sign up for my newsletter. I only announce new releases and promotions where one of my books is available for free, so you won’t get bombarded with petty detail. If you are interested, please go to my website and the sign up form is right on the main page: www.allegragray.com

Writing from the heart by Lynn Cahoon

Please help me welcome Lynn Cahoon to my blog today. She’s got a great blog for you and I know would love your comments.

Final_Marriage_Not_Included_copy_2Writing from the heart.

We all have them. The stories that we call the one from our heart. For me, Marriage Not Included is one of those heart stories. Not because I wanted to be a defender of the heritage seed movement, but the places and events my heroine experiences are all from my ‘real’ home town.

Kuna, Idaho was a small town surrounded by farm land. I rode the bus an hour to school, winding through the mile long ‘blocks’ which on our street had six houses. My best friend lived a half mile away. And getting together after school with anyone was out of the question, until I passed my driver’s exam.

My graduating class was 60 strong. We would have been 63 but a couple didn’t pass their final exams and one guy moved into the more structured facility on the east side of town, the state penitentiary, before graduating.

But years later and many miles away, I can still hear the cows mooing gently in the pasture, the warm summer nights when we sat outside in the dark, watching for the stars, and the angst I felt as a teenager, wanting to be anywhere but were I was. I dreamed of living in New York, going to school in a small New England college, living a life I could only imagine.

I didn’t move to New York or graduate from an Ivy League college. And I don’t live in the same small town where I grew up. I do imagine my hometown and the joy of a little girl riding her first horse. Or planting her first row in her garden.

Simple lives. Of course, now my ‘small town’ is a bedroom community of the larger Boise. The new high school I graduated from is now the old high school. Time passes. Sometimes for the better.
I like to think the world Lauren and Miles resided in helps to preserve my memories of that simpler time.

What type of setting do you like in your stories? Are you a country girl (or guy) at heart? Or do you yearn for big city adventure like the teenaged me?

Marriage Not Included
Lauren is headed back to school, this time not as a fun loving coed but to achieve her dream of turning the family farm into Idaho’s first Heritage Seed Center. Selling organic produce at the local farmers market, she meets Miles. After an unexpected act of kindness toward her daughter, Lauren agrees to one date.

As a VP and heir apparent to HN Seeds, the family business, Miles unknowingly holds the future of Lauren’s farm in his hands. Lauren’s looking for anything but a romance. She’s got too much on her plate to risk the distraction. But he plays the one card Lauren can’t resist, family. Miles needs Lauren and her daughter to feel at home. And Lauren needs Miles and his large extended family more than she knows. But can she forgive the one betrayal that would ruin all of her plans for the future?

An Interview with Brenda B. Taylor

Please help me welcome Brenda B. Taylor to my blog today. Brenda gave me a great interview and is giving a $25 Amazon gift card to one commenter and a coupon for a free download of Heaven Must Wait and Follow Your Heart from Smashwords.

Heaven_Must_Wait2_2Tell us about yourself.

I’ve had the ambition to write fiction stories since childhood, but never found the time to sit down and put my thoughts on paper. Several times I tried, but became distracted by attending school, then later working and family. Now that I have more time to sit quietly, think, and write, I am trying to fulfill this lifelong desire.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be, and why?

I love my home in the piney woods of East Texas, but my second choice would be Scotland during the summer months and Texas during the winter months. I would not want to face the darkness and cold of winter in Scotland.

How did you get started writing?

After retirement, I decided to write a historical fiction novel based on my family in Missouri. I didn’t want to get to the end of my life and say, “I wish I had done that.” Finding I knew nothing about writing fiction, I joined writer’s organizations, loops, and studied the art of novel writing. It has been a journey.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

At present, I write historical fiction with elements of romance and family values woven into the fabric of the story.

How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite?

I have written four books. Three in The Wades of Crawford County series, and one stand-alone Scottish historical fiction. I really can’t say I favor one over the other, but the Scottish historical was fun to write. I traveled to Scotland for research, and found my family there.

Tell us about your current series/WIP.

Currently, I am working on the edits for the third book in The Wades of Crawford County series entitled, Through The Storm. The series follows the courtship, marriage, and early family years of Leann and Ralph Wade who live in post Civil War Missouri. I plan another novella and novel in the series to make five books.

What inspired your latest book?

My last novel, the Scottish historical, came about through genealogy research of my mother’s family. I uncovered the Scottish connection and became intrigued by the fact we have a Scottish ancestor who emigrated to the U. S. in the early 1800’s. I traveled to Scotland and connected with our family there.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

At present I am trying to get Through the Storm, the third book in The Wades of Crawford County series, ready for publication.

Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

My story ideas came from family research.

What is your favorite part of writing?

Writing the novel. I don’t like editing, but know it is very necessary. My books go through at least six edits before publication.

What is your least favorite part of writing?

Editing is my least favorite activity. I want to be creative and write something new and exciting. I love to see just how exciting I can make a story. Formatting for publication runs a close second.

What is your typical day like?

While having a morning coffee, I have a devotional and then begin writing, editing, formatting, or whatever else my WIP requires at the time. I will work until approximately ten o’clock, and then go on to other activities. Sometimes I return to the work in the late afternoon, but not often.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

My first book was self-published at the beginning of this year, and has been another major learning experience. I took an online self-publication class, read the Smashwords guide, and began formatting by trial and error. Realizing I didn’t have enough time in this life to pursue traditional publishers, I decided to self-publish. Traditional publishing takes years, and I didn’t want to wait that long or hassle with agents and publishers.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

I would advise others to study the process and be sure you want to venture into the waters. Sometimes they are very cold and rough.

What was the deciding factor in self-publishing your book(s)? Did you decide on ebook or print only or both?

I decided to publish ebooks first, and then later, when all my novels are online, begin the process of formatting for print. I need to study the print formats further, and won’t take the time right now.

What went into the process? Writing, editing, cover design, formatting, etc. Share your ups and downs and how you went about it. If you used a service, can you share?

I use a content editor and a proofreader, then my husband and I edited continuously. For the cover designs of the Wades series, I hired a graphic artist and used photographs of my granddaughter. Thinking I may want to change something down the line, I do the formatting and uploading of my books.

How long have your book(s) been out? How long between books if you have multiple sales—and if you have multiples did you see a bump in sales with subsequent publication?

At present I have two books, a novella and a novel, out in the Wades series. I am in the process of getting a third one ready for publication. After this third Wade book, I will publish the Scottish historical.

Follow_Large_2Follow Your Heart, The Wades of Crawford County Series, Book 2

Follow Your Heart is a poignant tale of newlyweds, Leann and Ralph Wade, and their struggle to overcome difficulties during the early years of marriage in post Civil War Missouri. The novel tells of a love strong enough to survive the hard times with the cords of family values and faith intertwined throughout the story.

Chapter One

Cuba, Missouri
September 1869
A chilly gust of wind pushed through the open window and past the lace curtains, jerking the wrinkled, faded paper from Leann’s hand, sending it to the floor. She shivered then rose to close the window.
Sue picked the paper up and examined it. “Are you still reading this letter from Sonny Wade, when you’re marrying his brother in two days? I thought you threw it away ages ago.”
“Hand that to me.” Leann had not heard her sister enter the room. She snatched the letter from Sue’s hand, tearing the fragile paper. “Really, Sue, my letter is none of your business. I should have thrown it away, but I felt sorry for Sonny, being in the war and a Union prison camp. And besides, I forgot about it.”
“You were hiding that letter.” Sue’s eyes narrowed when she looked directly into Leann’s.
“I didn’t hide it. You and the family read it.”
“Several years ago. You’ve been hiding it ever since and probably secretly reading it.”
“Don’t be silly.”
“Have you seen Sonny since he got out of the army? Or do you just read his letter and dream about the handsome man?”
“No, to both questions. He works on a Mississippi River steamboat and has only been home a couple of times. Pa told me he saw Sonny in town last year. They talked for awhile, then Sonny headed for the saloon when Pa walked away.”
“Well, you should have thrown it away. What if Ralph finds out you secretly kept his brother’s love letter?” Sue’s locks bobbed with her shaking head.
Leann tore the already ripped paper into tiny pieces and threw them into a small trash basket sitting beside the bedroom door. She could not explain to herself or to her sister why the letter had remained in the drawer for years. “Are you happy now? It wasn’t a love letter. You read it. He only wrote about the war and being homesick. I didn’t answer, so he never wrote again.”
Leann grabbed her younger sister by the arm, looking directly into the girl’s green eyes. Sue stared back with the same intensity. “And don’t you tell anyone about me keeping the letter. I forgot about it until I started packing. Do you want to cause trouble with Ralph or the family?”
“I won’t tell, if you will let me keep your pretty green parasol when you leave.” Sue pushed Leann’s arm off her own.
“That’s my only good one. It matches my green voile dress. I won’t have anything to take to the socials.”
“Make your husband buy you a new one.” Sue was unrelenting.
“Okay. I will leave my green parasol with you. Just don’t tell I kept the letter. Sonny Wade means nothing to me.”
“Well, he must mean something, or you would have thrown his letter away. He may not have put in writing that he loved you, but he came around here pretty often before he joined the army and gave Ralph room to move in.”

An Interview with Sandra Schwab

Please help me welcome Sandra Schwab to my blog today. She’s given me a great interview, for you to enjoy.

Schwab-SpringtimePleasures-HQ-Xsmall_2Tell us about yourself.

Thank you so much for having me, Cindy! – My name is Sandra Schwab, and I have been writing historical romance for the US market for the past thirteen years. My first novel, THE LILY BRAND, was published in 2005.

In my “other” life, I’m a lecturer of English literature, and I live near Frankfurt/Germany with a sketchbook, a sewing machine, and an ever-expanding library, where books multiply at an alarming rate.

How did you get started writing?

I’ve always loved inventing stories and I started scribbling them down as soon as I could write. For as long as I can remember it has been my dream to become a published author.

Was your road to publication difficult or a walk in the park?

Since I was nineteen years old, I had tried to find a publisher, when finally, after years of collecting rejection letters, I had to face the sad truth that I was simply not writing the kind of things that a German publisher would buy from a German author. This could have been the end of my lifelong dream, but I wasn’t quite ready yet to give up hope. Instead, I started to write in English, which is a second language for me. A lot of friends told me I would never be able to compete with native speakers. I’m happy to say that I was able to prove them wrong. 

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be, and why?

In a small English village; preferably with a nice National Trust country estate nearby and a good train connection to London so I can easily visit the wonderful museums in London.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

When I was still a child, I fell in love with historical fiction – I devoured retellings of medieval epics and Rosemary Sutcliff’s novels. Once I started to read historical fiction for adults, I often despaired about the many sad endings (hero and heroine die on top of a tower, pierced by multiple arrows – but hey, at least they swear neverending love to each other before they drop dead, that’s totally romantic, isn’t it?), ghastly details (the exploding wax baby), and horrible or downright disgusting sex scenes (the worst was the book with the goat sex scenes) (please note the plural: there was more than one such scene and more than one poor goat).
When I discovered historical romance in 1999, it was like a revelation: historical fiction, but with a nice, strong romantic plot and wonderful love scenes (and not a tiny, teeny goat in sight!). Given my love for this genre and for history, it was only natural that I eventually started to write historical romance myself.

What inspired your latest book?

A few years ago, I stumbled across the original black-and-white St. Trinian’s films. I was utterly enchanted by their very unconventional portrayal of female characters: the girls of St. Trinian’s are utterly fearless, they terrorize adults, they have great adventures, and get into many mad scrapes – but at the end of the day, they are always victorious. And woe betide the person who dares to stand in their path! What would happen, I asked myself (as authors are wont to do), if you let loose such girls in Regency England and tried to introduce them into polite society? And thus, the idea for SPRINGTIME PLEASURES was born.

Give us an elevator pitch for your current book, SPRINGTIME PLEASURES.

George Augustus Griffin, Viscount Chanderley has to marry – fast: His father has ordered him to find a suitable wife this very season. Alas, the only woman Griff has eyes for is the very unsuitable Miss Carlotta Stanton, who is not only unbecomingly tall but also wears the ugliest spectacles in all of England. Still, Griff is utterly bewitched by her intense green eyes. Yet however much he feels drawn to her joie de vivre, duty and honor demand that he stay far away from Miss Stanton.

Dubbed “the Giantess” because of her unfortunate height, Charlie Stanton finds the London season far less glamorous than she had thought it would be – not the least because she is consigned a place among the wallflowers. But then she becomes acquainted with the very dashing Lord Chanderley, whose life is overshadowed by a terrible tragedy in his past. Ever ready to help others, Charlie is determined to rid him of his Sad Melancholia – even if it means taking on wild boars and highwaymen. However, the biggest challenge might be the elusive viscount himself and his belief that he is beyond all redemption.

Excerpt from SPRINGTIME PLEASURES

Charlie & her friend Emma-Louise chat about the hero

“The drive with Lord Chanderley was pleasant. Very pleasant, truth to be told.” Charlie looked up at her friend. “I wish you could meet him one day. He is so handsome. Indeed, I should say he is the most handsome man in all of London!” She smiled dreamily. “He can make his eyebrows mesh. Like this—” She curled her forehead, imitating Chanderley’s frown.

“A most peculiar feat,” her friend commented drily.

Grinning, Charlie nudged her with her elbow. “It is. And it has the most peculiar effect on me.” Reddening, she quickly continued, “But he is a charming man. And a nice one. It is not often that one finds a genuinely nice person, is it?”

Emma-Lee made herself comfortable on the arm of Charlie’s armchair. “He certainly sounds very pleasant.”

“Yes, pleasant. And sitting next to him on that box seat yesterday, now that was very pleasant as well.” Charlie grinned up at her. “It is most shocking, is it not?”

“Most,” Emma-Lee agreed. “Do continue.”

Charlie leaned her head against her friend’s shoulder “He smells very nice. And he has those lovely big hands.” She stretched out her right arm in front of her and wriggled her fingers. “They are quite lovely in gloves, but when everybody sits down to supper at the end of a ball, I can’t help looking at them in the, you know—” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “—nude.”

The two girls exchanged a glance before they burst into giggles.

“I suppose he would be much shocked if he knew that I am fantasizing about his hands,” Charlie finally gasped.

“Fantasizing!” Emma-Lee’s brows rose. “You’ve said nothing about fantasizing, Carlotta Stanton!”

“I know, it is most shocking. But his hands are so big and brawny and… and manly.” Charlie gave a happy sigh. “I never knew that hands could be so fascinating.” She glanced up at her friend. “Do you think I might be developing a brain fever? When I sat next to him in that phaeton, my body felt all warm and tingly. Prickly. As if I had fallen into nettles. Though not as unpleasant.”

“One should hope not!” Emma-Lee murmured.

Who doesn’t love a good time travel story? by Marie Higgins

Please help me welcome Marie Higgins to my blog today. One lucky commentor today will receive a print copy of Marie’s book WAITING FOR YOU (US Only), so be sure and leave her a comment. Marie has written a wonderful blog about time travel. Read on….

Waitingforyou_2Somewhere In Time –

The man of my dreams has almost faded now. The one I have created in my mind. The sort of man each woman dreams of, in the deepest and most secret reaches of her heart. I can almost see him now before me. What would I say to him if he were really here? “Forgive me. I have never known this feeling. I have lived without it all my life. Is it any wonder, then, I failed to recognize you? You, who brought it to me for the first time. Is there any way that I can tell you how my life has changed? Any way at all to let you know what sweetness you have given me? There is so much to say. I cannot find the words. Except for these: I love you”. Such would I say to him if he were really here. ~~Elise McKenna

Back To The Future –

Marty McFly: Wait a minute, Doc. Ah… Are you telling me that you built a time machine… out of a DeLorean?
Dr. Emmett Brown: The way I see it, if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?

George McFly: Lorraine. My density has popped me to you.

Kate & Leopold –

Leopold: That thing is a damned hazard!
Kate: It’s just a toaster!
Leopold: Well, insertion of bread into that so-called toaster produces no toast at all, merely warm bread! Inserting the bread twice produces charcoal. So, clearly, to make proper toast it requires one and a half insertions, which is something for which the apparatus doesn’t begin to allow! One assumes that when the General of Electric built it, he might have tried using it. One assumes the General might take pride in his creations instead of just foisting them on an unsuspecting public.
Kate: You know something? Nobody gives a rat’s ass that you have to push the toast down twice. You know why? Because everybody pushes their toast down twice!
Leopold: Not where I come from.
Kate: Oh, right. Where you come from, toast is the result of reflection and study!
Leopold: Ah yes, you mock me. But perhaps one day when you’ve awoken from a pleasant slumber to the scent of a warm brioche smothered in marmalade and fresh creamery butter, you’ll understand that life is not solely composed of tasks, but tastes.

Timeline –

Robert Doniger: Yeah, yeah, look. We need cultural experts, not scientists. My people simply don’t know about the medieval world, or how to mingle with the locals, which is what we’re gonna have to do, if we’re going to find the professor and bring him back.
Marek: So that’s it? We just step on that machine and wiz back to 1357?

The Time Traveler’s Wife –

Alba at Nine: Tell me the story of how you and Mama met?
Henry DeTamble: Doesn’t she tell you?
Alba at Nine: She does, but not like you do.
Henry: Well, it was right here in this meadow. And one fine day, your mom, who’s just a tiny little thing, goes out to the clearing, and there’s a man there.
Alba: With no clothes.
Henry: Not a stitch on him. And after she gives him the blanket she happens to be carrying, he explains to her that he’s a time traveler. Now, for some reason I’ll never understand, she believes him.
Alba: ‘Cause it’s true.

What kind of research goes into writing a time-travel novel? Do you need some kind of time machine like the DeLorean…or will a penny be enough?

Lately, I have become fascinated with time-travel stories…and movies. Every writer puts a different spin on their plot, which is what I love. It’s so intriguing to read how someone from our time can be sent back (or forward) to another dimension. I love reading how that person adjusts—or at least tries to adjust—to their new world, and then what steps they take to return to their own time.

Over the years, many movies have grabbed my curiosity mainly because of the time-travel element. In Back To the Future, Doc & Marty tried to create a new way to get Marty back home—without messing up the time-continuum. The intrigue of waiting for that moment, and almost not making it, kept me captivated. In Timeline it was the fast-paced story of trying to find the one man they were sent back in time to get, only to have everything go wrong at every turn. In Kate & Leopold…okay, mainly I loved this story because of the romance, and hullo—Hugh Jackman! (heehee) But I loved how he was sent forward in time, only for her to go back in time. Loved that concept! And with Somewhere In Time, (dreamy sigh) it was a wonderful romance that lasted throughout the years, combined with the romantic music…(another sigh). Yes, that is one of my all-time favorites.

I think one of the reasons I like time-travels so much is because I find myself thinking about how I would change my life if I knew what I did and could travel back in time to change it… I also think of how I would like to experience the 1800’s (Regency or even Victorian England) if just for a week; to see what the gentlemen were really like, and how the women of those times really behaved. After a week though, I’m sure I’d want to return to my own time.

I have written a couple of time-travel novels. Each one has a different twist to the time-travel element. I tried to combine all the things I enjoy reading or watching movies that make the storyline interesting. I invite you to check out “Waiting for You”, and coming soon, “Love Lost in Time”.

Here is the blurb and snippet from my book, “Waiting for You”.

When a beautiful woman claiming to be a ghost from 1912 appears in Nick Marshal’s new office and begs for help in solving her murder, he’s intrigued enough to consider her plea. A scandal that rocked Hollywood almost destroyed his law practice, so taking on a client who insists she’s dead seems a good way to refresh his career. The more history he uncovers, the deeper he falls for the ghost. Abigail Carlisle believes Nick is her heart’s true desire, but how can happily ever after happen when she’s already dead?

**excerpt**

“Excuse me if I’m intruding.”

A feminine voice broke his concentration, and he swung around. A woman rose from the brown leather chair in front of his desk. Confused, Nick glanced from the woman to the closed office door and back again. When did she get here? His face heated from embarrassment. She must have been in the office waiting for him when he’d arrived with Vanessa. But why hadn’t he noticed her until now?

Not believing his eyes, he blinked and ran his gaze over the strange woman again. She definitely didn’t look like a model from a style magazine, like Vanessa did. Instead this woman looked as if she had stepped off the set of a motion picture from the early 1900s—or a historic magazine.

His visitor smoothed a hand down the side of her ankle-length dark brown skirt decorated with entirely too much lace. Her silk blouse was the darkest purple he’d ever seen, and the color brought out her amazing cobalt eyes. Her clothes contoured her body nicely yet were modest, especially in this day and age. Her dark brunette hair was swept up beneath a flat purple hat decorated with an outlandish matching bow-shaped flower in front. White-laced gloves encased her slender hands, adding to the olden-day glamor style. Even her proper posture spoke of an old-time society dame. Yet her smooth, youthful face told him she wasn’t old at all—probably somewhere in her mid-twenties. And her eyes… He’d never seen such intriguing blue eyes before.
The oddly dressed lady cleared her throat and stepped closer. “Forgive me for interrupting.”

Despite the musical lilt to her voice, the trace of British intonation brought to mind the high-and-mighty aristocrats Nick had rubbed elbows with at his last firm. With quick fingers, he straightened his tie and came forward. “Uh, no, ma’am. You didn’t interrupt anything important. I’m sorry you had to witness that, um, display just now.”

Her lips remained stretched in a thin line and he couldn’t quite tell if she was irritated at him—and at the situation—or not.

“Are you Mr. Nicholas Marshal?” she asked in a choked voice, almost as if she was holding her breath.

He maintained a professional smile, but after what she’d caught him doing, it was hard not to feel like digging a hole and sticking his head inside…then covering it up. Maybe Vanessa set out to sabotage his first day in a new town after all.

“Yes, I’m Nick.”

“The solicitor?”

Solicitor? Who uses that term anymore? “I’m a lawyer, yes. And you are…”

She took another step toward him. “I’m Abigail Carlisle.”
