KillerLove_w8921_750_(2)_2Do you have other talents? Or is there a talent you don’t have that you wish you did?

I don’t really have any other talents, but I would LOVE to be able to sing. I was just thinking recently while listening to an Elvis song…wow, how would it feel to open your mouth and have something that magical come out? (Of course, I wouldn’t want to sound exactly like Elvis. )

How did you get started writing?

I’ve wanted to write for as long as I can remember, and I wrote my first romance when I was eleven (which I still have written out in pencil somewhere). I put my writing on hold for many years, but in 2001, I took a writing class and my desire was renewed. I wrote as often as I could, between working full-time and being a single Mom, and I published my first novel in 2007, Nothing to Fear, through The Wild Rose Press.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write mostly suspense and paranormal because that is what I love to read, and those are the story lines that tug at me. I love to be creeped out, love to have my heart thumping in fear or anticipation. What a rush!

How much time do you spend promoting your books?

I try to spend a little time each day, but no more than half an hour or so, and not every day. Actually, part of that time is promo’ing for other authors, too. Mostly in a Yahoo group I started called Authors Helping Authors, where we tweet for one another, and also do many other types of promo for one another, so that it doesn’t seem like we’re pushing our own work. What works best for you? I haven’t found the avenue that absolutely works the best, but I believe keeping your Amazon and Goodreads profiles up to date (which I don’t always do), and interacting with readers as often as you can, is the best way to go.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

It’s been wonderful. I’ve been traditionally published, and published with a small e-publisher, and I love each of those avenues.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?
I would say, the best advice is to be sure, absolutely sure, your book is professionally edited. I would love to get to the place where self-published books weren’t harangued as being error-riddled trash.

What advice can you offer readers of self-pubbed books in making a decision on what to read?

PLEASE read the excerpt, or the ‘Look Inside’ feature on Amazon. Oftentimes, if you aren’t going to like the book, you will get a good idea of that from the excerpt. If it doesn’t engage you in that length of time, then don’t buy it.

Do you have critique partners?

Yes, and they are invaluable. I would never release a book, send it to a publisher, or to my editor, without having my critique partners look at my work.

Do you write under a pen name? Why or why not? How did you choose it?

Yes, because I felt my real name, Alice Clary, was a bit too plain. I chose Alicia because it is similar to Alice, only prettier, and I chose Dean because that was my dad’s first name and he passed away in ’94 before I was published, but he would have been extremely supportive and proud of me.

Tell us about your current series/WIP.

I am in the last stages of a short story titled End of Lonely Street that is set in 1957. I love that era; the music, the tv shows (I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver), the clothing, pretty much everything. But this is my first time to write in that period, and it has been so much fun!

My publisher, The Wild Rose Press, recently released an e-book boxed set called Killer Love, which contains four of my romantic suspense stories (including my first ever release, Nothing to Fear):

Truly Madly – Romantic Suspense – Haunted by her family’s tragic legacy, an artist moves back to her home town to settle her parents’ estate, only to learn that someone is out to frame her for murder.

Poetic Injustice – Romantic Suspense – An ambitious detective investigating the murder of a high profile celebrity judge is distracted by the sexy, bad boy ME, who is exactly the kind of man she’s sworn to avoid like the plague.

Tears of the Wounded – Romantic Suspense – A madman bent on revenge puts a diabolical plan in motion where a man’s races against the clock to save his daughter could mean death for the woman he loves.

Nothing to Fear – Romantic Suspense – A frightened wife flees her psychotic husband and enters the witness protection program, but when an undercover cop out to avenge his partner’s murder tracks her down, she discovers her new location—even with her new identity—isn’t the safe haven she’d hoped for.

Excerpt from Nothing to Fear:

Jade realized with surreal wonder that Bryce had sliced the knife across her neck.

Her hands flew to her throat. Blood gushed between her fingers. She sank to the floor, finally free of Bryce’s grip.

Through a blur of pain, she was vaguely aware of El Lobo lifting his gun and yelling something unintelligible—shattering glass as Bryce hurled himself through the window into the rain drenched night—the booming echo of a gunshot—and El Lobo running to the window.

The man looked back and forth between Bryce’s escape route and where she lay on the floor. Moving to her side, he tore off his shirt and pressed it against her throat, cursing under his breath.
The metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. Iciness twisted deep inside her—seized her skin. Her body convulsed. She clawed at the hands that held her. Dear God, she couldn’t breathe.

In her delirium, she saw a blurred image of demonic red eyes and huge fangs.

This must be what death looks like.

The room faded in and out like the screen of a movie theatre as it switched frames. She tried to stay awake, afraid of what the blackness would bring, but her mind wouldn’t focus.

“Hold on,” a voice murmured. “Please don’t die on me, please don’t die.”

She wanted to answer but couldn’t. His words came from far away, then disappeared completely.

The world went silent as darkness swallowed her.

Alicia_Dean_Tin_Man_Color_2BIO:
I live in Edmond, Oklahoma. I have three grown children and a huge network of supportive friends and family. I have dreamed of being an author since I was a young child. There is no feeling in the world like seeing your dreams fulfilled, and I couldn’t be happier. I wrote my first romance at age 11, and my hero looked just like Elvis Presley (which I plainly stated in the story as my description :)). I still have that story, but I hope I have learned and grown as a writer over the years.

I write suspense and paranormal, among a few other random genres from time to time. I am a launch author for Amazon Kindle Worlds, with two Vampire Diaries stories and one Gossip Girl story. I currently have a total of approximately nineteen novels and short stories published.

Other than reading and writing, my passions are MLB, NFL, and watching my favorite televisions shows like Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Justified, and Dexter (even though it has sadly ended, I will forever be a fan). My favorite authors, and this is only a small sampling, are Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane, Lee Child, Lisa Gardner, Sharon Sala, Jordan Dane, Ridley Pearson, Jonathan Kellerman… I could go on and on. Oh yeah, and I am still an avid Elvis Presley fan.

Talking with K. M. Fawcett

Thank you, Cynthia, for having me on your blog today!

Fearless_Cover_2What inspired your Survival Race series?
One day I was watching the rescue of mistreated horses on Animal Planet. It was heart wrenching to see those beautiful animals neglected and starved so thin their rib cages showed. How would the owner have felt if he were penned up and abused like that? This got me thinking. What if humans were pets, and someone–aliens perhaps–bred us and gambled on us for sport like we do in horseracing, dog racing, and cockfights? What if they wanted to be entertained by watching alpha gladiators fight to the death? I have no idea what happened in the rest of the episode. I was daydreaming about my new world and my new story.

Tell us about your latest release Fearless.
Fearless is the second book in the Survival Race series. To protect her peaceful village, Myia, a shaman-in-training, is sent on a quest to heal the Highland leader’s heart. It should be an effortless duty…until she meets the gorgeous, stubborn Kedric. A gladiator who escaped enslavement, Kedric only wants to liberate the villages from their common foe—a race that breeds humans for blood sport and genetic experiments. He knows he should shun Myia’s soothing embrace, but he can’t seem to stay away. As their passion grows, Kedric must decide between fighting his war or surrendering his rage—and his heart—for Myia’s love.

Which book, Captive or Fearless, did you have the most fun writing?
Captive will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first manuscript I finished, the first manuscript I sold, and the first book in the Survival Race series. I absolutely love my tortured hero, Max, and enjoyed bringing him back in book 2. Fearless was really fun to write, though a bit outside my comfort zone because it was sexier and steamier than Captive. Myia can’t heal Kedric’s spirit unless she touches him. Although Kedric desires her, he doesn’t want to be healed so refuses to let her touch him. This led to some fun sexual tension!

Do you have other talents?
My husband and I own a dojo in NJ where we teach Isshinryu karate, self-defense, and traditional Okinawan weapons (RyuKonKai). It’s great. Everything I learn in the dojo is useful when writing an action packed series. I’ve received wonderful feedback from readers commenting on how realistic my fight scenes are. Perhaps I should credit my husband. He obliges me when I tell him, “Punch me. I have to see if something works for the book.” 🙂

Do you have a view in your writing space? What does it look like?
I write everywhere so my view changes. Very often I write in my car or in the waiting room at ballet classes, in the theater at ballet rehearsals, in the same room as my son at drum lessons (that’s a pretty distracting one. He wails on that drum set and I’d rather listen to him play than focus on the book). I love to write on our deck when the weather is nice. And I love to write next to the fireplace in the winter.

What are you reading now?
I am helping to judge the RWA Rita contest, so I am reading those book entries now. Six are finished and two more are waiting for me to start.

What is your next project and when will it be released?
Beauty and the Curse is a short story co-written with my friend and author, Cathy Tully. It’s an adult fairytale (so much fun to write) and releases on March 19 through Amazon. It’s available now for pre-order. I’m currently working on The Survival Race book 3. I absolutely love this hero and heroine! Plus I’m super excited we get to learn more about the Hyborean rulers in this book.

Where can readers find you?

Fearless Blurb:

TWO SOULS

Myia, a shaman-in-training, wants desperately to protect her peaceful village from the barbaric Highland invaders. To hone her powers of prophetic visions and healing, the village elders send Myia on a quest to heal the Highland leader’s heart and stop a brewing war. Myia’s mended many souls before, so this should be an effortless duty . . . until she meets the gorgeous, stubborn Highland warlord.

ONE DESIRE

Kedric, a gladiator who escaped enslavement, only wants to liberate the villagers from their common foe-a race that breeds humans for blood sport and genetic experiments. Fueled by his rage, Kedric is determined to take down the brutal enemy. So when a raven-haired beauty with a body made for sin tries to sabotage his mission, Kedric wants her gone. Yet no woman’s touch has ever left Kedric more annoyed . . . and aroused. Kedric knows he should shun her soothing embrace-but he can’t seem to stay away. As their passion grows, Kedric must decide between fighting his war or surrendering his rage-and his heart-for Myia’s love.

Excerpt from Fearless:

Angry red streaks snaked through his aura. “What manner of trickery is this?”

“Get off of me, barbarian.” Name-calling? Really? Had her father taught her nothing?

“Barbarian? That’s funny coming from a savage.”

She gasped. “Savage? You’re the one on top of me.”

“As I recall, I wouldn’t be on top of you if I hadn’t needed to protect myself from your tricks.”

“I am a spiritual healer. I only wanted to repair your soul. You must release my people.”

“They’re free to go at any time. They choose to stay.”

His weight was crushing her, making breathing difficult, but she refused to let him see her discomfort. If she could calm herself enough, her spirit could reenter his, and she could try healing him again. This might be the only chance she got before he…What would he do to her?

She didn’t sense anything evil, vile, or malicious. Murder wasn’t present in his aura. The only thing she perceived was arousal. Typical male. Perhaps she could use that to her advantage.
There were three occasions when a person’s spirit was the most vulnerable: during sleep, during illness, and during sex—so she’d been told.

“You’ve invaded our peaceful village and took our people against their will. Forgive me for not believing you.” Her words were angrier than she wanted them to be. What happened to her shamanic training?

“Seems we have a lot in common, you and I.”

“We have nothing in common, barbarian.”

“Did you not invade my body against my will?”

“To heal your spirit.”

“So you say, savage.”

Would he stop calling her that? She was not a fierce, violent person. She was tranquil and at peace with the universe, dammit.

Well, at least she strove for peace.

“However,” he continued, “you needn’t concern yourself. My spirit requires no healing.”

“So say you. But our spirits have met, and yours told me it hid a deep wound. Let me back in. Let me into your body to heal you.”

His smirk surprised her. What could he possibly find so humorous?

“If anyone enters another’s body, it will be me.” His warm lips pressed against hers. As if to prove his point, his tongue coaxed hers to open for him.

She’d been kissed before, but not from a man so dangerous and commanding, or so good at it.

Well, she wasn’t about to waste the opportunity to do what she came here for, especially since nothing in his aura indicated malicious intent. His spirit simply sought to demonstrate his male dominance in a kiss. Nothing more. Ha. He’d learn who the dominant one was when she connected with his spirit again.

She opened her mouth and kissed him back. His pause indicated surprise. He’d obviously expected her to resist. When she didn’t let up, his jaw relaxed and his kiss deepened. She couldn’t deny the freedom her soul felt.

But she’d come to heal his heart, and as much as she would like to give in to the pleasure she was receiving, she needed to heal him first.

Again retreating to that tranquil place in her mind, her spirit gathered energy and flowed from her body into his. Her spirit didn’t get further than the impenetrable stone wall before it was thrown from his body again.

His lips were off hers, the weight of his body disappeared. The influx of warm night air came as a relief.

“Savage,” he boomed. “Stay out of my body.”

“If you enter my body, barbarian, rest assured I will enter yours.”

My Love Affair by Martha O’Sullivan

Please help me welcome Martha O’Sullivan to my blog today.

last_chance_cov_2My love affair with California began at the tender age of fifteen and continues today, three decades later. So it should come as no surprise that the book of my heart, which somehow turned into a trilogy, is set there.

Maybe it was the indescribable thrill of a Midwestern girl seeing the ocean for the first time (we have a lake in Chicago, but it’s not the same). Or the sight of unapologetically bronzed coeds with movie-star teeth driving silver metallic convertibles and playing volleyball in the sand. Perhaps the towering palm trees swaying against the impossibly blue sky? But that was in Southern Cal; my Chances trilogy takes place in Lake Tahoe and San Francisco, hundreds of miles north.

I was an unassuming only child of the 70’s, growing up in a place where a short, precious summer turned into a long, cold winter seemingly overnight. What else was I to do but read (thanks, Carolyn Keene)?

In high school, I often opted for the city bus because it stopped in front of the library. Just a branch, mind you, but they had loads of paperback books. And no matter the inventory du jour, I was drawn to the revolving wire rack of romance novels. Harlequin Presents, Danielle Steel and later on, Nora Roberts.

The books took me to places all over the world where effortlessly beautiful, wonderfully flawed heroines were swept off their feet by dynamic, irresistible heroes. I preferred the books to the afternoon soaps because I could imagine the characters in my mind’s eye. And if I found the ending disappointing or abrupt, I would simply continue the story in my head.

Writing such ideas down, however, took another thirty years.

In the interim, I went to college and met my own prince charming. And he took me to San Francisco on our honeymoon.
And, as cliché as it sounds, that’s where I left my heart. Well, part of it anyway. Because eight years and two babies later, he took me to Lake Tahoe for the very first time.

And my frisson with California moved even farther north.

I hope my books will take you there. And you’ll leave a little piece of yours behind too.

BIO:

Martha O’Sullivan has loved reading romance novels for as long as she can remember. So much so that she would continue the story in her head long after the last chapter was read. Writing her own novels is the realization of a lifelong dream for this stay-at-home mom. She is the author of the Chances trilogy available now from Red Sage Publishing. Martha writes contemporary and erotic romances with traditional couples and happy endings. Her current work-in-progress is a Christmas novel set in Florida. A native Chicagoan, she lives her own happy ending in Tampa with her husband and two daughters.

The Chances trilogy by Martha O’Sullivan

When I started writing Second Chance five years ago, a trilogy was the farthest thing from my mind. Moira and Paul’s story was originally part of that first novel. But as Lindsay and Brian’s adventure evolved, I realized there wasn’t room in the book to do Moira and Paul justice, not to mention the unrivaled beauty of the Lake Tahoe winter. And since Delaney and Mike’s Chance Encounter was dancing relentlessly in my head, I put Moira and Paul ‘s Last Chance on hold. Now it’s their turn for Happily Ever After. I hope you’re as excited to see them again as I am! What better way to conclude the Chances trilogy than to come full circle.

In Second Chance (Chances trilogy book #1), star-crossed lovers Lindsay Foster and Brian Rembrandt keep the rugged, fawn-colored shores of Lake Tahoe blazing hot long after the summer sun has set. In Chance Encounter (Chances trilogy book #2), Delaney Richards and Mike Savoy heat up San Francisco’s chilly days and fog-cloaked nights with white-hot passion and pulse-pounding suspense. In Last Chance (Chances trilogy conclusion) the long-bridled desire of Moira Brody and Paul Webster melt the snowcapped Sierras into torrid puddles despite the single-digit temperatures of the Lake Tahoe winter.

Excerpt from Last Chance

Moira’s emerald saucers were filling behind their licorice lashes and she was biting her bottom lip, trying to hold back the tears. Paul couldn’t have stopped himself from going to her if he’d wanted to.

“Moira, what are we doing?” he entreated, gripping her forearms. “What have I done? Have I lost you?”

She shook her head from side to side and her eyes began to empty, leaving sooty tire-like tracks on her china doll face. Tipping his head back in silent thanks, Paul took her in his arms. She moved into his body, sobbing through sawed-off breaths.

“Tell me nothing happened. Tell me there’s nothing between you and him,” he prayed out loud after an affecting moment.

She answered by burrowing her head deeper into his shoulder and wreathing his middle. He felt her breathing level off and he kissed the top of her coal-black mane. She smelled like a subtle version of earlier, infused with wine and garlic. Hope replaced the uneasiness in his stomach and he heard himself say, “I had to force myself not to go back there. I’ve been driving around for hours, going crazy.”

She angled out of his grasp just enough to make eye contact. Suddenly she was the girl he used to know again, not the woman tying his insides into knots. Or maybe the perfect combination of both. Her eyes began to shine and a satisfied smile curved her lips. “You have?”

“Yeah. Like outside my mind crazy.” He laid his lips on hers and tasted the salt from her tears. She melted into the kiss, then the next. He wondered if she could sense him growing behind the zipper. Or the spool of want unwinding into a thousand frazzled threads in his gut. Gasping for air, he released her mouth and cupped her face. “You make me crazy, Moira Brody. Absolutely crazy.”

Her breath caught in her throat and her eyes began to swell again. She swallowed hard and allowed, “Then I like you crazy.”

Resting his forehead on hers, he let the night roll down his back like a recalcitrant tumbleweed. Then he closed his eyes and appealed, “Do I need to fight for you, Moira?”

She laughed a little. “Well, Jason did bring flowers, dinner, wine.”

“I brought flowers, dinner, wine,” Paul defended high-mindedly, straightening. “Did you ever get the Chinese food?”

“Yeah, it’s in there.” She nodded over his shoulder at the sub-zero they’d picked out together.

“It’s your favorite. Cashew chicken.”

“Thank God,” she gushed, dabbing the outer corners of her eyes. “I’m starving.”

Paul’s nose wrinkled. “Did Bernini’s have a bad night?”

“Not from what I picked at.”

“Poor guy,” he gloated through a chuckle. “Went to all that trouble for nothing.”

“I wouldn’t say for nothing,” Moira demurred, her eyes dancing with innuendo. “He seemed to enjoy the evening.”

“Oh?” inquired Paul, stepping out of her embrace.

Gleaming now, she raised her eyebrows mischievously. “Yeah.”

He felt his expression plummet. “Did he kiss you good night?”

“He did,” preened Moira.

Paul couldn’t believe how much that bothered him. “Did you want him to?”

Her face instantly sobered. “No,” she avowed, then finished with hushed care. “I wanted you to come back.”

“I did.” As if he’d had any choice in the matter. Paul drew her to him again and ran his hands up and down her willowy back. “I had to.”

Ancient Egyptian Life in Letters by Veronica Scott

Please help me welcome Veronica Scott to my blog. She’s got a great blog for you. Read on.

DancerOfTheNile_highres_2I’m always so pleased to be Cindy’s guest! Thank you for having me visit today. I thought I’d talk a bit about the ups and downs of life in ancient Egypt, as told in letters written primarily on bits of pottery. (Since I love all things ancient Egyptian, and write a paranormal romance series set there.)

Surprisingly the Egyptians wrote many private letters, almost always beginning with a salutation that included “Life, prosperity, health”. We tend to think of them using only papyrus scrolls, writing in elaborate hieroglyphics but in truth many everyday letters and notes were written on flakes of pottery known as ostraca, in hieratic, which was a cursive version of the symbols. Large quantities of these ostraca have been found at Deir el-Medina, a town where the artists, sculptors and others who created the royal tombs in the Valley of Kings lived. The village was occupied for hundreds of years and in some cases archaeologists have found letters from succeeding generations of the same family.

Letters from Ancient Egypt by Edward Wente is one of my favorite research books and all the snippets in this post below are drawn from that book. (Scholar’s Press, Atlanta, GA, 1990). He’s credited with doing all the translations. I’m omitting all the flowery and lengthy standard greetings and closings.

Here’s one that must have quite a story behind it:
“I have written to you. It is none of my wife’s business.”

And a woman wrote her sister a long story that starts with this:
“I will divorce you (my husband) keeps saying when he quarrels with me on account of my mother questioning the amount of barley needed for bread…” Mother-in-law problems of 3000 years ago!

I like this one:
“What is the meaning of your dealing with me like a magpie among the doves?”

Or an admonishing note that a housewife Nebemnu received from her sister:
“Please give your personal attention and weave for me that shawl very promptly…because I am really naked…make one for my backside.” Nothing to wear to the big festival she mentions in another part of the letter apparently….

Many of the letters are requests or deal with trade – send me a goat, bring me a bird, did you get the sixty cakes, buy me an ox, send me a duck as well, we only received 30 fish….if there is to be no ox, return the bed and the coffin I gave you…

It’s touching how often the letters inquire after the health of the other person. A fairly standard paragraph in many missives gives reassurance to the effect that we’re fine today but no one can say how we’ll be tomorrow. “I’m alive today but I don’t know about my condition hereafter,” says one scribe/priest to his superior.

There were a number of letters about crimes, investigations and punishments , mostly involving theft or suspected theft. One of Pharaoh’s generals wrote: “…have these two policemen brought to my house and get to the bottom of their charges in short order and kill them and throw them into the water by night but don’t let anybody in this land find out about them” O_o, sounds like some seriously bad things were happening but as all we have are bits and pieces of letters, we’ll never know how it turned out. The same general ordered a substantial quantity of silver or gold sent to him without delay, via barge. Even more interesting, the letter about killing the policemen was sent to a woman…

Some of the most touching were letters written to the spirits of the deceased, who had gone to the Afterlife. Here’s one from a widower to his late wife: “How are you? Is the West taking care of you…? Now as I am your beloved on earth, fight on my behalf…please become a spirit for me (before) my eyes so that I may see you in a dream…”

I love writing about this era in Egypt’s past, although I put something of a paranormal spin on the events and have the gods and goddesses becoming directly involved with my characters. My most recent Best Selling novel, Dancer of the Nile, involved the snake goddess Renenutet and Horus the Falcon. Here’s the story:
Egypt, 1500 BCE
Nima’s beauty and skill as a dancer leads an infatuated enemy to kidnap her after destroying an Egyptian border town. However, she’s not the only hostage in the enemy camp: Kamin, an Egyptian soldier on a secret mission for Pharaoh, has been taken as well. Working together to escape, the two of them embark on a desperate quest across the desert to carry word of the enemy’s invasion plans to Pharaoh’s people.

As they flee for their lives, these two strangers thrown together by misfortune have to trust in each other to survive. Nima suspects Kamin is more than the simple soldier he seems, but she finds it hard to resist the effect he has on her heart. Kamin has a duty to his Pharaoh to see his mission completed, but this clever and courageous dancer is claiming more of his loyalty and love by the moment. Kamin starts to worry, if it comes to a choice between saving Egypt or saving Nima’s life…what will he do?

Aided by the Egyptian god Horus and the Snake Goddess Renenutet, beset by the enemy’s black magic, can Nima and Kamin evade the enemy and reach the safety of the Nile in time to foil the planned attack?

Can there ever be a happy future together for the humble dancer and the brave Egyptian soldier who is so much more than he seems?

Saloon Girls and Whores of the Old West by Sylvia McDaniel

The_Burnett_Brides_BOXED_SET_72dpi_2Yeah, I knew that would grab your attention right away, and I aim to please. If you were around in the sixties and even the seventies, I’m sure you saw Gunsmoke with Marshal Matt Dillon. And who else…Miss Kitty.

Did anyone else realize that Miss Kitty ran the saloon and would have been a well dressed whore? I was only five years old, how would I have known that she was sleeping with the cowboys for money. And why didn’t the sheriff ever marry her?

Since I like for my westerns to be as historically accurate as possible, I do a lot of research on the west. One of my favorite books is Hell’s Half Acre by Richard F. Selcer. This book is about the half acre of Fort Worth, Texas back during the height of the cattle driving days. He talks about prostitution back in the old west and how it contributed to the local economy. Women were not allowed in most saloons, but they were close by. Most women rented rooms above the saloon where the randy cowboys would pay them a visit.

While we like to think of a prostitute in the old west looking like Miss Kitty, most were between the ages of fourteen and twenty and were hardened women with names like Big Nose Kate, Squirrel-Tooth Alice, Irish Kate and Monkey. Yes, can you imagine a cowboy coming in and asking for Monkey?

There was also a row of shacks in town that was known as “the line.” They were wooden cubicles ten to twelve feet deep and were rented by the week. A crib girl could be had for pocket change and her rent for a cubicle was twenty-five dollars a week. At fifty cents a tumble, she’d have to do more than fifty cowboys a week to survive. That’s hard living. Mr. Selcer discredits the myth that eventually most of these women found husbands and married. There is no statistical evidence to support this myth, and many died very young.

Another book I have, Saloons of The Old West by Richard Erdoes talks about Hurdy Gurdy Girls. I’d never heard the term, but it’s a saloon where the men went to drink and dance with a good-looking woman. At eight o’clock, the men filed in, paid the ante for the first round of drinks and their partner. Then they’d grab a hurdy gurdy girl and dance either a sovienne, waltz, mazourka or a schottische. After their allotted time, the women would take their partners to the bar where they bought another round of drinks and paid for their next dance. A good hurdy-gurdy girl could net twenty-five dollars plus her share of the drinks. Better than the crib girls were doing in Fort Worth. And sex was not expected.

Tell me what do think of when you hear the term soil-doves from the wild west? Or a saloon girl? Did you know about Hurdy Gurdy Girls?

Sylvia McDaniel is the author of the best-selling western historical series The Burnett Brides. She loves stories with good-looking cowboys, action, humor and romance.

Undressing for Love by David Russell

Undressing for Love
(*NB: the terms ‘Girl’ and ‘Boy’ signify someone over 18)

For me, sex is nothing without refined, dramatic foreplay. Dressing and undressing are the kingpin of that foreplay. There are five basic kinds of unrobing which can be brought into any encounter.
Undress_for_Love_2
1. Girl* undresses in front of boy: any girl that takes the disrobing initiative can get really proud and confident, and pre-establish her control over the love scene. Girls: do a self-striptease in front of the mirror; love the sight of your bodies. say – however great you look in any outfit, you look ten times lovelier with your clothes off.

2. Boy* undresses in front of girl: come on: get over your shyness, boys. Do your own self-striptease: do as the girls do.

3. Boy undresses girl: every boy should know how to disrobe a girl properly, and make her feel great as her gorgeous body is revealed.

Girl undresses boy: be liberated, girls. How many boys, deep inside, want to be your beautiful hunks, your sex-objects. (And they also have their feminine side).
Boy and girl undress each other: great to alternate – each partner taking off each other’s garments in sequence (OK: the alternation can be made with 1 & 2).

GirlontopBeachEmbrace_2Any couple fancying each other should first get a mutual eyeful at a workout centre or a swimming pool. Swimsuits proclaim beauty and allure, They have an air of mystery; they get the imagination going. Arms and legs moving in the water evoke the pulsing rhythms of love. I imagine beautiful girls doing the backstroke giving themselves to me in total love.

Great to go through a few wardrobe changes within one love session. Start off both comfortably dressed for preliminary necking and petting. Skin-tight gear is really uncomfortable for this, so try something looser. Girls: make sure the zip on your jeans us easy to handle, or wear a skirt that is easy to lift during petting. You must offer some token thigh to lead your boy on, and help clinch your control of him.

Great to start the ecstatic process while your French kisses are really hotting up on the sofa, getting longer, breathier, deeper. Girls: hold the crown of your boy’s head as he curls tongues with you; unbutton his shirt, feel down his torso and back, start to undo his trousers. Boys: put one arm around your girl’s waist; with the other, gently raise her skirt, feel her thighs, unbutton her blouse, feel her back, press her breasts inside her bra. don’t undo it yet. and if you can do all this while holding a kiss, it’s fabulous.

You’re probably lying on the sofa at this point. Now stand and face each other. Let skirt and trousers fall. Show yourselves to each other as if you were modelling. Have a really tight embrace in your underwear; keep it on for the moment. boys: now undo your girl’s bra, and do it gently, delicately – watch those flimsy shoulder straps. Girls: lift your arms in the air as he does it. You conquer him through the gesture of surrender.

Now – to build up more suspense, a wardrobe change. One of you stay in the bedroom or lounge to chaqnge, the other go into the bathroom.

Some wardrobe ideas – swimwear. This can be great, bringing the beach into the bedroom. Boys: build up a collection of boxer shorts and trunks of different shapes and sizes. Don’t be shy: try them on in front of the mirror. See which you look/feel sexiest in. Girls are turned on by boxer shorts – but trunks, right proportion in the right light, can give that second wave.

ManontopNewBeachEmbrace_2Girls: try on your one-pieces, bikinis, lingerie and bodystockings in front of the mirror; get high on your auto-erotic kicks. See which is really you, at your strongest and sexiest. (I feel that 40s and 50s retro one-pieces still have the edge; interested to hear readers’ opinions. Or how about wearing swimsuit under lingerie? One extra layer gives more suspense, and a bit of see-through more still.)
Put on tee-shirts and shorts. Imagine you meet and fall for each other on the beach. Peel off each other’s shirts, tops and shorts – strip each other for glorious athletic action. (Girls: you may prefer a bathrobe to a tee-shirt; that’s fine.) It’s great to feel the adrenalin pushing against
your costumes and against your partner’s body as you’re poised to plunge for the swim of love. do plenty of hand play around the edges of your suits. Boys: run your hands down in sweeping curves over your girl’s bra and cleavage, and down her back. Feel inside her bra if it’s not too tight. Do the same on her hips. Girl: feel your boy’s hips and thighs by the edge of his trunks.

Seduction2[1].300dti_2Turn the lights down low as you finally remove your costumes. Good to stand up and do so before you finally go to bed. Boys: taking off a glamorous one-piece takes a steady hand; cultivate one. Girls: some sexy trunks have knotted waistbands; be practised with knots.

Embrace_2Other ideas: Boys: uniforms and period gear. Girls: if you can get flowing ball gowns, that’s marvellous. It’s one of my favourite turn-ons to see a girl stepping out of a voluminous, or a skimpy, gown to show off a swimmer’s body. Schoolgirl gymslips are wonderful for petting.

Horizontal_300[1]_2A really good two-way strip can lift either/both of you up to a great androgynous feeling, break down your barriers with each other. So, macho woman and feminine man, get it together. Great, beautiful sex can free you from the constrictions of your gender categories.
Enrich your love lives with a good (un)dress sense.

But don’t forget to fit the condoms into the programme.

An Interview with Diane Burton

Cindy, thanks so much for having me here today.

perf5.000x8.000.indd1. Tell us about yourself.
I’m not a Michigander by birth, but I’ve lived here most of my life. I’m a wife, mom, and nana, and a movie-holic. Since I love action adventure, scifi, and romantic comedy, that’s what I incorporate in my books. Reading, quilting, and gardening are my favorite hobbies. I never seem to find time to quilt and bad knees hinder my gardening, but I always make time to read.

2. Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?
Oh my, yes. I was an elementary teacher for several years before being a stay-at-home mom (best job ever). Later, I was an inventory clerk for a flute store with an international mail order service (I once talked to James Galway); data entry clerk for a Girl Scout Council (during cookie order time); did temp office work; and worked in the land department of an oil and gas exploration company where I discovered the cure for insomnia—reading oil and gas leases. Now that I’m retired from all that I write full time.

3. How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite?
Written—maybe 30, some of which will never see the light of day. They were “practice”. Published—3 scifi romances in the Switched series; 1 sfr in the Outer Rim series; and 1 romantic suspense. My favorite? Always the one I’m working on, which is the 2nd book in the Outer Rim series.

4. Tell us about your current book.
ONE RED SHOE is my first published romantic suspense. Daria’s life is too predictable. Nothing ever happens in her small Iowa town. But when she travels to NYC looking for a little excitement, she never expects to find a wounded spy. For Sam, nothing is worse than getting shot in the butt—except accepting help from a tourist. As they flee cross country with assassins right behind them, she wants to believe they belong together while he’s convinced she’s better off without him.

5. What inspired your latest book?
ONE RED SHOE started as a writing assignment at a Mid-Michigan RWA chapter meeting. The facilitator set the scene (you’re in a train station and someone is running toward you) and we had 30 minutes to write. The first thought that came to me was: The man running toward her wore one red shoe. The story ran from there. Along the way toward publication (over 15 years), the story changed a lot. I’m so glad it found a home at The Wild Rose Press.

6. What is your next project and when will it be released?
I’m writing the next book in The Outer Rim series, which is about strong women on the frontier of space. The series started with THE PILOT about a free-spirited cargo hauler and an uptight administrator. My WIP is THE CHAMELEON about a woman whose fluff-brain façade masks a hard-driving worker bent on success. THE CHAMELEON will be released this spring.

7. How does your family feel about your writing career?
My family is very supportive, even the grandkiddies (ages 4 & 6) who write their own stories with me. My husband is great. When he sees I’m “buried” in a story, he’ll prepare dinner or do the laundry and when the dust bunnies threaten to take over, he vacuums. Although he doesn’t read much fiction, he reads mine and says they’re great. Now that’s support.

8. How has your experience with self-publishing been?
Very rewarding. Not necessarily in a monetary sense (although that has been better than I expected), but in self-esteem. It was a little scary taking that path when I published my first book. I’d gotten the rights back from the publisher of SWITCHED and since it was out of print, I had nothing to lose. I like the control I have with self-publishing. Along the way, I’ve met a lot of great authors who’ve also taken that road. My science fiction romances are all self-published. SFRs have a growing audience, which traditional publishers haven’t capitalized on. Yet.

9. What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?
Do your homework. Check out all the venues available (Amazon’s KDP, Nook, Kobo, iTunes, Smashwords, etc.). Know what the royalties are and the conditions under which you’ll be paid. Before even thinking about uploading your story, hire a good editor and, unless you’re very artistic, hire a good cover designer. Yes, they cost money but, in the long run, they’ll enhance your book. Editing mistakes or a cheap-looking cover can harm not just that book but your image as an author.

10. Was your road to publication difficult or a walk in the park?
I wish it had been a walk in the park. I wrote for ten years (lots of rejections) before my first book was accepted for publication. After a number of “life” challenges, it was another nine years before I took the plunge into self-publishing. Then another three years before contracting with a traditional publisher.

Excerpt from ONE RED SHOE:

For the second time in her life, Daria Mason came face-to-face with a man pointing a weapon at her. A pervert, with unzipped jeans, wielded a green box knife. Because she’d raced into the restroom without checking out the situation, he now stood between her and the exit.

She was at the end of the proverbial rope. After walking in circles, she finally found a restroom and nobody was stopping her from using it. Especially not someone playing copycat with that guy in the movie who wore one red shoe.

“I am having a really bad day,” she declared in the don’t cross me voice she used on her brothers. As soon as her words echoed off the hideous pink and black tiled walls and floor, she lowered her voice. “You are in the wrong place, mister. Now zip up and get out.” She pointed straight-armed toward the door.

The man shook his head and set the flimsy knife on the counter. “Lady, you have more guts than sense. You are in the wrong place, at the wrong time.” His voice was even softer as hers. He eyed her with a look so dark and intense it paralyzed her like a hawk froze its prey.

An Interview with author Cheryl Dale

Overtaxed_Cover_Front_2What genres do you write in and why?

I write romantic mystery, humorous mystery, and mystery with romantic elements. These are the genres I enjoy reading.

How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite?

I’ve written loads, but I’ve only published 7 with an eighth one coming out this year. Losing David is a vintage mystery with a love story, set in 1962 and taking place on the southeastern coast. I think anyone who enjoyed the film To Catch a Thief will enjoy it. I’ve worked on this one for years and it’s by far my favorite.

What is your favorite part of writing?

Telling the story. It’s therapeutic to get the scenes I see in my head out on paper.

What is your least favorite part of writing?

Marketing. I’m a shy, introverted wallflower who jumps when anyone says “Boo!”

What was the deciding factor in self-publishing your book?

I’d been reading self-published books on my Kindle and realized many of them were as good as the books from well-known publishers. After joining a self-publishing loop where authors were talking frankly about the differences in self-publishing and large publishing companies, I decided to test the waters. I first issued a romantic suspense Harlequin had published and reverted the rights to, and it did okay. Then I put out a new romantic mystery, and it did okay. Now I’m putting out a light mystery, the sequel to a hardcover book that came out a year ago.

What advice can you offer anyone deciding to self-publish?

Make sure your writing is professional. Lots of people write one novel and think they’re through. Usually, that first book is not very good. Usually, it takes two (or ten in my case) to learn the craft. Then, once you’ve learned how to write professionally, you still need to hire a good editor and cover artist.

Do you write under a pen name?

My first book was published under the name Cheryl Emerson. I didn’t particularly want to use a pen name but the publisher, Silhouette, insisted. I’ve since updated and reissued it under my own name.

What’s next for you?

As I said, a vintage mystery will be coming out soon. Right now I’m concentrating on my sequel to my light mystery. Overtaxed and Underappreciated is available from Amazon for Kindle, soon to be available in paper.

Excerpt from Overtaxed and Underappreciated:

(after a bunch of heavy boxes fall over on the heroine and the EMTs are called)

“No! Not the ER.” I tried to sit up.

The EMT kneeling beside me pressed me back. “Look, ma’am, with your history–”

“But I’m all right. What history? I’ve never hit my head on the sidewalk before. This does not call for the ER.”

Sexy Dr. Bennigan who usually manned the emergency room had regrettably seen me under similar conditions too many times, due to circumstances that were not my fault. Okay, maybe one or two episodes were my fault, kind of, but…

I refused to face him again.

“I told you how many fingers you were holding up and everything. I want to go home. I’ve got to go home.” I might have sounded a little hysterical, but I so did not want to meet Dr. Bennigan.

The second EMT was already pulling out a stretcher and rolling it over.

“Hey, I said I’m fine!”

Plaid Shorts, who had been following the proceedings with interest, butted in. “Don’t you remember that actress who got that head injury while she was snow-skiing? She didn’t want to go to the hospital either. You know what happened to her?”

Who the heck was this nosy parker? He looked familiar but I couldn’t place him. My head hurt too much and his loud shorts didn’t help. He was darned meddling, whoever he was.

“That’s right, hon,” Sam chimed in. “I remember reading about her.”

Plaid Shorts ignored Sam and intoned, “She died.”

Died? Oh. Still…

“I don’t think it’s that serious. I feel pretty good except—”

Plaid Shorts pressed his case. “Do you want to die?”

I must have been disoriented or I would never have allowed the paramedics to lift me onto the gurney and strap me to it.

The crowd that had assembled around the ambulance gawked.

A boring day in Medder Rose makes me the star attraction.

Somewhere in the rear I saw a flash. Lightning. Is it about to rain? Another flash came, and a third as they put me inside.

Great. I’d hit my head and now a thunderstorm was coming. All I needed since I didn’t have an umbrella.

The vehicle doors slammed shut.

Not that I needed an umbrella inside here.

Why do these things always happen to me? What have I done to deserve this?

Turned out the worst part of my day hadn’t yet begun.

CoverFinalLG-AVienneseChristmas_21. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be, and why?

This is a tough one. I currently live in Vienna, Austria right now and many people would say this is a great place and it is. The place where I want to live most is Scotland. I’ve been there twice and each time I fall in love with it a little more.

2. Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?

Yes, lots of them. I was in nursing. I worked with databases. I worked in publishing. But each and every time I came back to writing.

3. Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

Inspiration is everywhere. Living in Vienna, I get a lot of ideas from just walking around the city. I have an idea book that is filled with more than I’ll ever get to complete.

4. What is your typical day like?

Well, it’s hard to say. First, when I get up depends upon how late I’ve written the night before. Some nights, I get the writing bug and just can’t turn it off. Others, I’m in bed before 11. What I call a normal day is where I get up between 7 and 8. I’ll go to the computer and look at email, Facebook and Twitter. I’ll schedule a few promotional things then I go get breakfast for me and pup Harry. While, I’m eating, I’ll watch some sort of documentary probably about Scotland. Once breakfast is over, I delve right into my daily task list and try to cross off as many of them before dinner. All my writing tasks are in the list and I try to follow it as closely as possible. However, it’s not a rigid list and I find myself deviating from it occasionally.

5. What was the hardest thing you’ve found in the process of self-publishing? What was the easiest part of self-publishing?

The hardest part for me is the actual selling. The rest is easy because it is very task oriented. I have a list and follow it.

6. Can you list some Pros/Cons of self-publishing?

This is going to sound weird but they are basically the same thing: you’re in charge of everything. You can leave nothing to chance. If you aren’t a detail oriented person, then this may not be for you. Read some of the latest books like Write.Publish.Repeat. for a hard look at the self-publishing world. It is hard work but some of the most satisfying work you’ll ever do.

7. Do you have critique partners?

Absolutely. I belong to the fabulous Passionate Critters. We are a very work oriented group and regularly critique. We also talk every day about the writing life and life in general. There isn’t a better set of women out there.

8. How likely are people you meet to end up in your next book?

Hardly ever. Sure, I’ve used some as a template for a character but I learned a long time ago, people rarely want to see themselves in a book.

9. Do you have a view in your writing space? What does your space look like?

I have a wonderful view from our flat. We overlook the Belvedere Gardens. My desk is quite different from the one I normally have at home. It’s smaller for one thing and there really aren’t any drawers but I love the top. It’s a heavy piece of glass that has the word love in many different languages. I will never forget what I’m writing about! LOL!

10. Do you prefer to read in the same genres you write in or do you avoid reading that genre? Why?

I try not to because I don’t want it to influence my own writing. Right now, I’m finishing up a contemporary erotic romance that is in its final editing stages. I’m reading non-fiction about writing and some hardcore science fiction.

11. Do you write under a pen name? Why or why not? How did you choose it?

My name is part of my legal name. I choose it because I wanted something easy to remember for both me and the readers. I choose it in particular because a friend mentioned to me that the easiest remembered names are one to two syllables. My name is actually a 2,1,1,2 combination. I just used the two one syllable parts.

12. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do to combat it?

I just got over the worst case of writer’s block and lack of inspiration I’ve had in my forty years of writing. It was the combination of a move from all I’ve ever known and an illness.

13. What are you reading now?

Right now, I am finishing up Write.Publish.Repeat by Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant with David Wright. It’s a very interesting book and depicts the self-publishing world in vivid color. If you haven’t read it you should because there are tips inside for every author, traditionally or self published.I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

14. Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?

This is where my geek girl stands out. I’m going back to words from the movie Galaxy Quest: Never give up, never surrender. This is more true if you self publish because it does take quite a while to pull in the readers. If you keep at it, slow and steady will win the race too.

15. What’s next for you?

I have high hopes for the contemporary book I mentioned previously. I’m finishing up some final editing bits for my agent and she’ll be shopping it around hopefully next month. After that is off my plate, I have a book to finish for one of my other publishers and I’ll be publishing the second book in my A Taste of Vienna series, Night Train.

Giveaway:

Lynn will be giving away an ebook copy of A Viennese Christmas and one other ebook from her extensive backlist to one lucky commenter.

The heart knows the language of love.

Blurb:
Sign language interpreter, Amanda Kranz, wants to find her soul mate but fears her chance has past due to the death of her childhood sweetheart. Finding sexy historian Henry Jager during an outing in her new home of Vienna, Austria, may have been a stroke of luck. When his ex-fiancée shows up just as their relationship starts to sizzle, Amanda must decide if standing up for what she really wants will give her lifetime happiness. Or will she be destined to spend her life alone?

Excerpt:
Her disappointment must have been plain on her face as she found herself suddenly gazing into the greenest eyes in a very handsome male face. A question in German followed as she tried to ascertain just what he said.

“I’m sorry,” she stated, her confusion obvious. “I’ve only picked up a word or two since I’ve been here. Do you speak English?”

“You’re American?” he questioned without the accent most Austrians possessed.

“Don’t make it sound like such a curse. There are a lot of us, you know.” Her indignation evident in her tone.

His rich laughter filled the space, warming her to her bones in ways she hadn’t expected. “Sorry. I guess one does pick up the attitudes of where they live.”

She looked at him puzzled. “That’s that supposed to mean?”

“Henry Jager, American, at your service ma’am.” His sweeping bow brought a smile to her lips.

“Amanda Kranz and I hardly think I qualify as a ma’am.” She stuck her hand toward him. His firm grasp sent an electric sensation as she felt the spark deep within her. She swore he felt it too as his eyes darkened.

“Do you prefer Amanda or Mandi? I know there’s not much of a choice with Henry.” His serious gaze spot of his interest.

Laughter bubbled up in her, the first such emotion in weeks. “Henry is a fine, strong name. And it doesn’t matter much with mine.” His hot look made her want to shiver in anticipation of what she could only speculate.

“Really? I would have thought your business associates would call you Amanda. Now your intimate contacts I expect call you Mandi.”

She gazed at him. Intimate contacts, now there was a misnomer. It had been years since she’d had any intimate contacts of the male persuasion. “Sounds good to me.”

“You gave in too easy.” He reluctantly let go of her hand as his look took on a more serious aspect. “Are you meeting someone?”

She shook her head. “No one to meet.”

“Good.” He grabbed her hand again, placing it in the crook of his arm. “Have you ever been to one of these before?” Henry expertly meandered around people, baby carriages and more as he led her to the next booth.

“Not really. I saw them last year but being so new to the city, I couldn’t bring myself to go to one alone.” She gazed at the Rathaus beyond them, remembering how intimidated she’d been by building even though it had a Christmas tree in front.

His eyes narrowed. “Sounds like you’re still a relative newcomer.”

“I suppose so. I got here in November of last year.”

“Ah – your impression?” His brows lifted when he drew back as if to study her face.

“Very commercialized. I expected something more – ” she struggled to find the right word. “– more homey, more authentic – more Austrian.”

Henry gazed around a moment before looking back at her. “I see your point. This is probably the one Christkindlemarkt that’s got the least to offer in specialized, authentic goods in my opinion except it does have a certain ambiance. And of course, there’s the skating rink as well as the park decorations.”

Her brow arched in amazement. She really hadn’t expected anyone to agree with her. All the women she knew gushed over every one of them. “You agree with me?”

His naughty smile was breathtaking. “Most definitely. This is the one where most of the tourists come. While there are some very Austrian things here hidden amongst the drivel, most are not unique or special in any way.”

“My thoughts exactly. Where exactly does one find more traditional items?” Astonishment spread through her. She had not once heard anyone say a negative comment about Vienna. All her colleagues gushed over the city but as far as she was concerned, it was just another place to live.

They stopped in front of a food booth, the aroma tantalizing. “Would you like something hot to drink?”

The brisk breeze nipped at her cheeks and she felt the cold through her coat. She definitely could use something to warm her up. “Sure.”

I’d love to relocate one day to Houston so I could be closer to my dad.

Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?

I used to beta test video games. Yes, it’s actually a real job. I got paid to play video games.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write what I love to read and that happens to be paranormal romance. L.J. Smith was my favorite author long before Vampire Diaries was made into a TV series.

Tell us about your current series/WIP.

I’m about half-way done writing book two in the Ever After series, Fallen Ever After. It’s due to my editor in late March and should be out in e-book in April.

How does your family feel about your writing career?

I discovered when I went to visit my dad around Thanksgiving that he’s been reading my paranormal erotica anthology out loud to my step-mom. LOL…it was one of those awkward moments where you politely retreat to get more cranberry sauce. Honestly, he’s very proud of me. My husband is a huge supporter too.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

Amazing. Just amazing.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

Worry about the writing first. Hire out for editing and cover art. Learn how to format.

What was the deciding factor in self-publishing your book(s)? Did you decide on ebook or print only or both?

I do e-book, print, audio, and recently expanded into German with my first foreign translation.

What’s next for you?

acjames_2I’m pleased to announce that I’m launching a Lady Jane’s Salon in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as a satellite to the popular NYC romance reading series. You can learn more here: http://ladyjanessalonwbs.blogspot.com

PREFACE

I never guessed that I could die with a sea of faces surrounding me, all cheering for my death. A woman wearing a jacket dress made of brocade only laughed louder when blood splattered the low square neckline. Where is Arie? I scanned the crowded club but all I could see were pale faces, some half covered by masks.

My time had come and I prayed she would finish me off quickly. The warm trickle of blood ran down my neck and chest, saturating the corset bustier of my gown. It seemed like a shame to ruin such a pretty dress. Strangely, I felt relieved the bodice was black and not a light color that would show a stain.

The fear of dying or more accurately, the fear of not existing, scared me stiff. Perhaps if I had satisfied this existential anxiety with faith I wouldn’t jump from panic to ambivalence. I should be angry at everyone who simply watched. They must think the gruesome display is part of the entertainment for tonight. After the bloody burlesque show I could hardly blame them.

Holly, I gave you the chance to leave. The telepathic transference hardly seemed relevant at this point. I knew if I’d never gone to the Hellfire Club, I wouldn’t be facing death now. Still, if my death meant the killings would stop it seemed justifiable.

“No!” I could barely hear Arie scream above the cheering voices clamoring for attention. The constant drone defies my effort to form coherent thoughts. I looked up and could see him on the balcony. When I blinked he had disappeared into the throng. I could feel the blood continue to trickle down my neck as she drained me. Dizziness threatened to pull me under. The audience applauded her brutality. I crumpled at her feet, looking up at her smile as thin as paper.

Blood. So much blood. My blood.

I didn’t want this to be the story of my death but this part is only a fragment of a narrative as old as time. Its voices fill the shadows with whispers of legend. We are told that the damned cease to exist and those absolved from sin are given eternal life. The damned can never be saved. They walk the earth in an eternal hell. I fear it will be my curse if death doesn’t claim me instead.
