EXCERPT from MAIL ORDER OUTLAW

mail_order_outlawThe first book in my new series, The Brides of Tombstone, is now available. Mail Order Outlaw tells the story of Lizzie Cobb and Ed Talbot. Their romance is anything but ordinary.

Here is the blurb.

Ed Talbot isn’t husband material. He’s an outlaw, was forced into his father’s gang at the age of thirteen, and is wanted Dead or Alive in more than one territory. But now his father is dead, he hates the life, the blood, and his brother’s rages. When a stagecoach robbery goes awry, Ed ends up with a satchel full of charming letters from an enticing young miss. Unfortunately for Miss Lizzie Cobb, her betrothed is now dead, and Ed Talbot sees a way out. Impersonating a fine, upstanding young man shouldn’t be too difficult. Despite the risks, falling in love with her proves to be all too easy.

Isolated on her mother’s ranch just outside of Tombstone, Miss Lizzie Cobb doesn’t have the time or the means to find a respectable husband. As a half Apache woman in the Arizona Territory, being a mail order bride seems like the only solution to her problem until she realizes that San Francisco is too far away, and she’ll have to leave her vulnerable mother and baby brother behind. Her solution? Call off the wedding.

When her groom shows up on her doorstep, she’s shocked. He’s handsome, strong, and has traveled hundreds of miles to claim her. His kisses inflame her body and his presence soothes her soul. Falling for the rugged man is beyond her control. But the past has a way of catching up to outlaws, and facing the truth is going to be hard…for both of them.

EXCERPT

As he read a plan formed. His only worries were how much Lizzie knew about Malcolm Brandon. The dead man signed his later letters ‘Mal’ so Ed would go by that name. He was only a little taller than the man had been so his clothes would pretty much fit, might be a little tight.

Could he do it? Could he become Mal Brandon?

The more Ed thought about it, the more he liked the idea. He’d have to sneak away in the middle of the night. If his brother knew of his plan to leave the gang, Harvey’d stop him; maybe even kill him if he had to. Especially if he knew about the money Ed had found in the lining of the valise, a lot of money. Enough for a fresh start.

Ed didn’t want to be in the gang anymore. He’d never wanted to be in it to begin with. His mother had wanted him to go to school and become a teacher. Ed had wanted that, too or at least to do something…legal.

As a kid he’d never really known Josiah. He was just the man who stopped by and spent the night every couple of months when Ed was growing up. Then when his mother died, Ed had been by himself for a few weeks before Josiah showed up. A few glorious weeks where he could mourn his mother, Becky Brody in peace. When Josiah found out Ed’s mother had died, he took Ed with him. Ed had been in Josiah’s gang ever since. The only things he had left of his mother were her green eyes.

He did have some things he was thankful to his father for. Josiah had taught him to use a gun and to ride like the wind. He could speak Spanish as well as anyone, because Josiah’s mother had been Mexican and he made sure both his sons could speak it. He was big; six-foot-four and muscular.

Only Harvey had been bigger.

Harvey was also meaner. He had no problem killing people.

Ed thought he actually liked it.

Harvey used and abused women, as well. He liked that, too.

Ed hated to see and hear the abuse, when there was nothing he could do. Once he’d tried stopping Harvey and nearly died for his efforts. Now he just stayed away from camp whenever Harvey brought a woman there, which thankfully wasn’t often.

Unless it was Belle. For some reason Belle James could give as much as she took and Harvey liked her best. Maybe loved her, if he was even capable of that emotion.

Ed didn’t have women very often. He’d fallen in love once.

When Harvey found out, he had taken the woman, raped her and left her for dead. There was no way he or Josiah, either one, would let Ed leave the gang for any reason.

Ed watched Joe stoke the fire and add wood to it. It was cold in the mountains and on the desert at night. It shouldn’t have been considering how blistering hot they were during the day, but at night the temperature dropped to uncomfortably cold.

Ed didn’t want to be responsible for that happening to any other woman, so he stayed away from them. He visited the occasional brothel. He was a twenty-eight year old man, after all and had needs just like any other man. But other than those visits, and he never saw the same girl twice, he stayed away from women.

Except for the valise Ed had, there was only a strong box on the stage. The box was locked and Harvey let the boys use it for target practice until the safe was opened. There was a small payroll inside. Only a thousand dollars, but that was enough to keep the men in liquor and women for a couple of weeks and then they’d plan another robbery of a stage or train or bank. Probably a stage because it was easiest and Harvey was all about easy.

Plans made, he waited for two weeks knowing the men would eventually go into Tucson to let off some steam. They never lasted longer than a couple of weeks after a score. By then the liquor ran out and so did the ammunition from the target practice and the money they’d gotten was burning a hole in their pockets.

This time, he’d leave. He had the knowledge and ability to take over another man’s life. His brother wouldn’t know where he’d gone and there was no one in the gang who could track worth beans.

Finally Ed could begin a new life. A good life as a good man and leave the gang and all those memories behind.

He was ready.

Harvey came over to him as usual. Ed was playing solitaire on one of the blankets.  “Come on, little brother. Let’s go into town. Have a few drinks and screw some women.”

“Ya’ll go on. I’m staying in camp.”

“You need to let off some steam, just like the rest of us.” Harvey laid his hand on Ed’s shoulder and squeezed. “Come on. Let’s go.”

Ed shrugged off his hand. “I don’t want to. Leave me be.”

Harvey looked at him, gaze narrowed.

Sweat beaded under his collar. Ed wondered if he would force him to go. But finally Harvey shrugged. “If that’s what you want, so be it. Let’s go men. We’ve got drinkin’ to do and women to fuck.”

Ed waited for two hours after his brother and the other men rode out before he took the valise and headed the opposite direction from Tucson. South seventy miles to Tombstone. Toward a new life. One he couldn’t wait to start.

The ride took him three days, taking care to go easy on his horse across the mountains and desert. He skirted the way stations, not wanting anyone to see him. He did stop at several smaller watering holes along the way that were off the beaten path. When he got outside of Tombstone, he made camp, changed into the clothes out of the valise and shaved off his beard. The clothes were small and a little short, but not enough to make a difference…he hoped. He was trying his best to put a new foot forward and put Ed Talbot behind him in another life.

Meet Carole Brungar, An Interview

Kia Ora, I’m Carole, author of women’s fiction title ‘a tide too high’. I live in the Horowhenua town of Levin in the North Island of New Zealand. I’m really excited about being able to visit with you all via Cindy’s blog. Thanks Cindy, for the opportunity!

CaroleBrungar 1I’ve been writing for a long time, mostly for newspapers and magazines but my foray into the world of fiction is relatively new, although my desire to write and tell a story isn’t. I read so much romantic fiction that after a couple of years I decided I could tell a story just as well. But as you either know or have guessed, it’s not as easy as it sounds! The journey to writing my first book started about 20 years ago. My first attempt was 53,000 words and I loved it. However, life happens and it was bound and filed in a draw and then packed into a box as we shifted homes several times.

Eight years ago I found that manuscript, re-read it, and discovered the plot lines had credibility, the characters had potential and the settings were unique. I was pretty darned impressed with what I’d written, but it lacked a maturity that comes from professional growth. So I set about re-writing it, building more depth into the plot and finally settling at over 120,000 words. I messed with the characters minds, gave them new professions, I set them challenges, and I made them human like you and I. I made them laugh and cry and I made them realise each was made for the other. Then I made them realise that the seas of the Pacific aren’t always storm free.

CaroleBrungar 2

My story is set mostly in scenic New Zealand, with its beautiful isolated Northland beaches and it’s vibrant cities. It tells of two ex-pat kiwis, Alec Stanford a London businessman whose family owns considerable land in New Zealand’s winterless north including private beaches, and McKenna Morgan, the lead singer in one of New Zealand’s biggest exports, rock band Polar Blaze. Her home is now in Brentwood LA, but her parents still live in her childhood home in Auckland.

Mac Morgan doesn’t do relationships; she simply doesn’t have time, she’s too busy trying to prove to everyone, including her mother, that she can make a success of her life. Her life evolves around Polar Blaze. Alec on the other hand, wants what his twin brother has, a home with a wife and children, but his beautiful socialite wife is filing for divorce and although he’s one of the world’s most successful businessmen, he has to admit, he hasn’t learnt how to manage a marriage. Perhaps he should leave it to those who are good at it, like his brother.

Life of a rock musician is full on, work hard, play harder, but when Mac collapses on stage in front of a packed Auckland crowd, she gets the ultimatum: change your lifestyle, or take your chances. Mac disappears to recoup at a secluded beach in the far north where she faces her demons and meets Alec’s family. And Alec.

A tide too high is a novel about two people from different worlds who find a soul mate in each other and face a struggle to keep that love alive, and make the right decisions.

He kissed her ear lobe and then her sun-warmed cheek. Their lips met and for the briefest of seconds he felt her tense before relaxing and he allowed himself to kiss her gently at first and then with more passion.

She rolled her body again and folded her arms on the side of the pool, this time studying him.

“What are you thinking right now,” he whispered huskily.

“I was wondering if you were still married?” she asked playfully, her eyes fixed on the grin that was sliding across his mouth.

He lowered his lips to hers and kissed her hard in response. “Pretty much,” he replied, kissing her again.

“What a terrible waste of resources,” she answered, when at last he lifted his lips from hers.

Carole Brungar 3 (1)Tell us all about you Carole

My hubby and I own two acres in the country with loads of wonderful old trees. Some 40 ofthem are kowhai trees and during August and September the kowhai are a riot of yellow flowers. Their blossoms carpet the lawns in golden yellow and they attract the kereru, New Zealand’s native pigeon and hundreds of native tui that feed on the nectar. Gradually the birds become drunk and by end of day they fight and sing and the noise is incredible. We live about 15 minutes from the west coast and on weekends love to visit the different beaches and walk with the wind in our faces. The beach is my special place to think.

I have a Degree in Communication Management and Journalism and I work as a communications advisor in local body government, dealing with media issues, writing promotional articles and sometimes writing speeches for the city’s mayor or councillors. Previously I worked as a newspaper editor and photographer for the New Zealand Defence Force.

CaroleBrungar 5My hubby Dennis is a talented landscape watercolourist and we share studio space here at home in a purpose built studio. When I’m not working my day job, I write, but I also teach fabric art classes throughout New Zealand, online and at home from Tui Glen Studio.

Well I’ve had quite a lot of feedback from readers asking what happens to Mac and Alec, and what about the other characters, especially the drummer Jimi. So although I didn’t intend to, I’ve started a shorter story that will add another dimension to the characters in a tide too high.

I aim to write stand-alone novels, as I personally like to read the whole story in one book and I’m currently working on my next novel, which is set in New Zealand during the 1960’s. It’s been a huge challenge researching the social history of that time and I hope I do it justice. I’m going to set it locally and although it will be totally fictitious, it will feature my grandmother’s milkbar. I loved it, especially the jukebox. The novel will weave a story around a couple that have to deal with the scars of the Vietnam War.

Finally do you have any advice for others?

I do. Although I’m a “novice novelist” if you like, I have to say, for those who want to write, write. Write for you. Write as CaroleBrungar 4though you will be the reader. That way, you will write what’s true to your heart. The other thing is, write what you can, when you can. Not everyone can write for five hours a day, or stay awake until midnight writing every night, but even if you can spend an hour a day, every day, you will eventually get your story told.

And lastly, if you haven’t been to New Zealand, you need to make it your next holiday destination. Don’t forget to spend some time in the winterless north – it’s seriously beautiful country!

A Word From Merlin by Aubrey Wynne

3D cover copy

I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Merlin—yes, the Merlin of Arthurian legend. In Rolf’s Quest, Aubrey Wynne’s first historical fantasy, you won’t find me at my height of popularity. I am trapped in a Hawthorne tree and getting desperate. You see the tree Vivien encased me in is dying. And when it does, I die. Hence, my distress.

My egotistical, self-seeking descendants have done little to aid my predicament. They either used magic to trick the woman (and by the gods, I know that doesn’t work) or did not see love staring them in the face until it was too late.

When I was down to one live branch, I decided to take matters into my own hands, er limbs. I told the latest failure I would take his first born under my own tutelage. His father ranted and then gave up, of course. God’s Blood, I raised a King. I can certainly educate a baron’s son.

Rolf was an excellent student. He grew to respect me and I feel there is a strong affection between the two of us. He is a natural sorcerer though and his shape-shifting abilities are tremendous. He is a champion on the battlefield and is favored by the King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

But it ends with this boy. He has found the woman that is the key to our future.  This is the last opportunity to end this curse. If he is not successful, I perish. Our future generations will never have the chance to find happiness. Rolf will take the defeat badly.

Wish us luck. I hope the next time we speak, you are able to shake my hand. And then the search for Vivien begins…

Rolf’s Quest Blurb:

Baron Rolf Arbrec, the royal wizard for King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, is burdened with a centuries-old quest to break the spell cast on his descendant, Merlin. To lift the enchantment, he must find true love without the use of magic or deceit, something that has eluded the men generations before him.

Finding genuine love is no easy task, even for a wizard, and time is running out not only to complete his Quest, but to give future generations a chance at happiness. When Melissa steps from his dreams and into his arms, he realizes his need for her love runs deeper than just a way to free Merlin.

Lady Melissa Garrick travels to London to meet her betrothed. Along the way, she encounters a man who haunts her dreams and makes her reconsider her destiny. Torn between loyalty to her family and her intense attraction to Rolf, she struggles to remain an obedient daughter. Though she desires him, will she defy her family and turn her back on her betrothed? Or will time run out and Rolf be doomed to a life of discontent and bitterness like his ancestors before him?

getPart Rolf’s Quest  Excerpt:

The surrounding mist climbed Melissa’s boots and swirled in and around her legs like an affectionate cat.  Gentle but firm, it pushed her inside the magical forest. The stillness of the place struck her. The kind of hush that fell over a room when something significant was about to happen. Her heart raced in anticipation. In front of her towered a massive Hawthorne tree with charred branches that seemed to welcome her. Between the gnarled limbs was a large blackened hole that filled the center of the trunk.

“I have been waiting for you.” She jumped at the sound of an old man’s voice. She screamed as a face appeared in the tree. “I do not mean to frighten you, child. I admire your courage. It’s a quality essential to your future.”

“Why am I here?” Melissa asked.

“To meet your Fate,” answered the raspy voice.  The distant sound of hoof beats distracted the ghost-like image. “And he has arrived.”

Melissa turned toward the forest opening in confusion.  “The mist . . .”

“Yes, it conceals our home from trespassers on the outside but does not impede our view from within.” The elderly man chuckled. “Rolf did not exaggerate your beauty.”

“Rolf?”

The pounding of hooves grew nearer.

“Ah.” The old man shook his head, regret in his eyes. “I must go.”

Horse and rider burst through the tree line. The great beast halted before her, and the stranger dismounted. In one fluid motion, he wrapped a powerful arm around her waist and pulled her hard against his chest.

He spoke only one word. “Melissa.”

The blood pumping through her veins throbbed in her ears.  “Rolf?” she whispered, clinging to him, afraid to raise her eyes.

His fingers lightly stroked her cheek and sent a shudder through her body. He lifted her chin, bent his head, and then paused.  Uncertain, she looked up, her mouth half-open in a silent question. The intensity and passion in his eyes told her he now claimed her as his own. Their breath mingled for a moment before his lips brushed hers. Then she threw back her head, surrendered to the sheer pleasure of his kiss, and her world shattered.

The soft touch of his mouth sent a shiver through her that made her knees buckle. His chest was hard beneath her palms. He buried his fingers in her hair and forced her head back, demanding more. She clutched at his tunic to hold herself up.

“I must have you.” His teeth nipped her earlobe; the whispered words tickled and teased her neck. One hand roamed the length of her back, sending waves of heat through the core of her body. His manhood pushed against her skirt. She struggled against this desire; her betrothed waited beyond the trees. Her mind told her to run, yet her heart begged to remain. She stopped resisting, leaned into him and gave way to pure passion.

Her mouth opened to return the kiss, only to feel him slip away. Her eyes flew open, and his image wavered then faded into the darkness. “Come back to me. Do not leave me like this.”

Melissa awoke, tears wet upon her cheeks. Emptiness burned in her stomach. She wrapped her arms around herself and curled into a tight ball to shield her body from the pain. She should not have hesitated.

An Interview with Ruth Kaufman

FollowYourHeart-KaufmanWhat is your typical day like?

Since I have two day jobs, writing/self-publishing and acting, every day is different. If I have an audition, I get assigned a specific time slot and can’t ask for another time so I can finish a chapter or whatever.  If I have an on-camera or voiceover booking, that comes first. Some on-camera days can be 12 hours or more, so no writing-related work may get done, though I might be able to respond to emails during breaks. I like schedules, so some days I work on writing in the morning and acting in the afternoon instead of bopping between the two.  I think next I’ll divide days into three: self-publishing/promo, actual writing, and acting (including submitting and/or preparing for auditions, self-marketing).

There are so many hats to wear with self-publishing that if I’m getting ready to release something new, I’ll probably have to move forward a bit each day or so. And there’s always more promo/connecting with readers I could do. I don’t necessarily take weekends off because I love my work (well, except some of the administrative s-p stuff).

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

I started offering a workshop called Taming the Octopus: how I tackled self-publishing without getting squeezed and now consulting because a) there’s such a huge learning curve and so much to absorb b) people started asking for advice.

Overall, budget more time than you think you need. Understand your own skill level for all of the major tasks. For example, can you really design a competitive cover? Know that you will need an editor and probably a proofreader, the questions are what kind and how many passes. Do your best to have a plan of what kind of product you’ll release and how often. The main advice I keep hearing is that it can take multiple books before you see a lot of sales.

Do you or have you belonged to a writing organization?  Which one?  Have the helped you with your writing?  How?

I actually dedicated my current release, FOLLOW YOUR HEART, to Romance Writers of America and my local chapter, Chicago-North RWA. Without the knowledge, networking, friendships and so much more that I’ve gained via RWA, I wouldn’t be where I am know and would’ve given up long ago.

My chapter does verbal critiques. Many of our published authors credit that experience as something that helped them publish. Also, conferences offer great workshops and the opportunity to meet industry professionals and other authors.

Do you have any words of inspiration for aspiring authors?

Write regularly. I meet so many people who say, “Someday I’ll write a book.” What are you waiting for? If you want to write, write. Take a class. Join an author group. Decide whether you want to pursue traditional publishing and how long you’ll give that, or s-p or both. Keep moving forward. If you write one page a day, you can have a book or a few novellas in a year.

What did you want to be as a child? Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?

I knew since kindergarten I wanted to be an actress. I wrote my first “novel,” a middle grade, when I was in high school. I wish I had a copy of it! But I didn’t really pursue writing until the late 80s, when I started my first book by hand. I let it languish until the mid-90s when I got my first laptop and finished it.

Tell us about your current series.

I’m trying something a little different. Most series involve, say, families, or people in a small town. I’m doing a time-based series where each book is a standalone. So the first is set in 1453, the next in 1460, and the third in 1463. This way the couples change without overlap, but the historical figures and some settings continue where each book left off.  I call it Wars of the Roses Brides.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

I should be releasing my next medieval, the third in the Wars of the Roses Brides series, over the summer. I also have something else that should release in July I’m not quite ready to share because details are being finalized (hope you’ll stay tuned via www.ruthkaufman.com!), and haven’t yet decided what timing is preferable for releasing more than one thing at a time.

RuthKaufman_AtHisCommand_His_800Give us an elevator pitch for your book.

I actually released two versions of AT HIS COMMAND. One is mild/sweet and inspirational, and won RWA’s Golden Heart® award. The other, which I call Historical Romance Version doesn’t have a faith element and opens the bedroom door.

Could she defy her king for love?

The king sends Sir Nicholas Gray to protect the recently widowed Lady Amice Winfield from undesirable suitors. Though Nicholas intrigues her, she yearns to run Castle Rising without a man’s control.

At court, the king and queen choose a husband for her. How can she follow the king’s command when she’s a scribe for his rival? Can she marry another man when she’s falling in love with Nicholas?

Excerpt: AT HIS COMMAND

Chapter 1

Sir Nicholas Grey’s scout leaned forward in his saddle, holding up two fingers to let the others know two horses approached. Nicholas heard only the slight jangling of harnesses blended with wind rattling through the trees, but relied on his scout’s uncanny ability to hear what no one else could.

RuthKaufman_AtHisCommand_Ins_800He and his eight men sat alert, deep enough in the forest to avoid being seen while maintaining a clear view of the road through leafless branches. Nine armed men could frighten travelers. ‘Twas best to let them pass.

Each man watched, each horse sinking deeper into chilling mire as a mud-covered, black palfrey plodded over the rise in the road, its long mane whipping in the frigid winds.

“No rider,” Martin, the scout, murmured.

“Look again,” Nicholas replied. At first he too had thought the horse was riderless. Now he could see a woman collapsed on the animal’s back. Her dark hair draped down its flank, mingling with the horse’s mane. The palfrey placed each step as if trying not to jostle its burden.

Another horse, this one a brown rouncey ridden by a thin, balding man, galloped after the palfrey. A look of triumph brightened the man’s face as he spotted the horse ahead of him. He bent forward, extending his hand. Fingers like talons grasped the woman’s tangled hair.

“Mine!” he cried.

*          *          *

Amice Winfield jerked awake. Agony forced her head back, allowing her to see the man who gripped her hair as though he’d perish if he let go.

Harry Winfield.

She screamed. Arrows of fear pierced her as she clawed at his fingers. Her horse bolted, leaving her dangling from Harry’s hand by a small clump of hair. The long strands held for a few seconds, then tore from her head.

Pain seared her scalp. She dropped into a puddle. Stunned by her fall and her stinging head, Amice could only stare at her tormentor while freezing water soaked her clothes. How she hated him. How she regretted her desperate flight from home. But what other choice did she have?

Harry gaped at the dark tresses hanging from his hand. He threw them to the ground as she struggled to rise. Panic gripped her as his hostile glare changed to a slow, confident smile.

“There’s nowhere to run. I’ll catch you if it’s the last thing I do,” he vowed. He leapt off his horse.

Amice tugged her sodden skirts, trying to haul them out of the puddle. Where was her mount? Too far away to reach without being caught, weighted down as she was. Sprays of water flew as she heaved her skirts over her arm. Heart racing, she ran for the trees. A branch snagged her. With a cry of frustration, she pulled the wet wool until it wrenched free.

Ignoring twigs tearing at her skin and icy mud that sucked away one of her shoes, she forged ahead. She gasped for air as she plunged into a tiny clearing, then came to an abrupt halt at the sight of a group of mounted men.

Inspiration by Wendy Byrne

accused_coverFinalInspiration comes from the strangest places at the oddest times. First off, I love to observe people’s behavior, their conversations, maybe adding some additional scenarios in my head about what’s going on. I might see a woman wearing something that’s interesting and unique and the beginnings of a new character might be born. Or I might overhear a conversation and think about how something might fit in a storyline.

As an example, one time when I was on a commuter train, I overhead two dads talking about their kids. Nice, right? Then the one dad said something that really made me smile. He remarked to the other dad that it was Wednesday which meant it was daddy daughter dinner night and that on daddy daughter dinner night, they always ate desert first. Awwww. Wasn’t that the sweetest thing? I thought what a lucky girl to have a father like that. I still haven’t figured out a way to work that conversation into a story, but I will eventually.

Life experiences. Sometimes good and sometimes bad might also be the jumping off point for inspiration. My book Accused started with a nightmare. I woke up shaking with the vividness of a dream. My eldest son had been arrested. Knowing my son was safe and sound and it was only a nightmare made my writer’s wheels start to turn. The feelings from the dream returned to me: the terror I would feel as a mother if that happened, the second guessing I would do, and what would be the worst thing that could happen—the son could be charged with murder.

I immediately started to work. I had such a vivid picture of Jillian (my heroine) and what she would experience. But I needed to think about her son (Travis) as well. What circumstances led to the arrest? What was he going through? Why? And then I started to think about the hero in the story. I knew I didn’t want to make him the detective because that felt too cliché. I started to think about how the hero (Sam) might be connected to Travis. That’s when I came up with the thought that Sam could be Travis’ football coach/mentor. And what if Sam had a troubled past himself, how would that play into the story?

This is where my own background comes into play, I’m a social worker by profession and worked many years in the field of child welfare. I always thought about how kids growing up in the system needed somebody to love them unconditionally, to be there for them and support them. Sadly, most of the time, this isn’t the case. But what if Sam had a troubled past with a mom who was on drugs, but managed to end up in a foster home with a woman who believed in him, who didn’t think he was a bad kid, but a kid who needed some love and guidance. So when I wrote Accused, I thought about a series of books all inter-connected by being loved and nurtured by a foster mother by the name of Mama Iris.

Below is a short excerpt from Accused:

The old floorboards creaked and groaned under Jillian’s tentative steps. Pacing lent itself to distraction. Leg up, leg down, creak, leg up, leg down, creak. Turn, take a sip of cold coffee. Repeat.

The problem was that when she stopped calculating each step, it became second nature, thus freeing her mind to remember why her heart fluttered, her stomach clenched.

Glancing at the clock for the hundredth time, doubt surfaced.  Glowing numbers mocked her as if to say, “You shouldn’t have trusted him.” Two in the morning. Where in the hell was he?

Jillian’s smoldering anger exploded into fear as she waited for her sixteen-year-old son Travis to come home. She tamped down worst case scenario thoughts as she dialed his cell phone once again.

Directly into voicemail.

Damn it!

She must have called thirty times since his eleven-thirty curfew had come and gone. If he’d been in an accident, she would have heard something by now. Then again, the roads leading to their home on the mountain were isolated, especially late at night. He could have run off the road and be lying unconscious in a ditch.

Being a single parent with all sorts of tragic scenarios bouncing around her head was hell. But she couldn’t say that married to Archie had made things easier. He was rarely home, and when he was, he usually detached himself from any parental responsibility. If he were around, no doubt he’d be in bed, sound asleep—no help whatsoever.

Jillian peeked out the window, hoping to glimpse headlights coming up the mountainous road. Her gut clenched and unclenched with each passing moment.

Two-fifteen.

After everything they’d gone through, he wouldn’t do this to her. Something had to be disastrously wrong. Travis was a good kid.

She ran fingers through too long, in-desperate-need-of-color-hair and considered contacting the police. Hand poised over the phone, she contemplated the repercussions….

Would they take her seriously, given his recent history? He’d run away before. They’d theorize he was back at it again. But her mother’s instinct told her this time was different.

“Writing the Range” by Jacqueline Diamond

ladyindisguise400_2When I began writing, it never occurred to me that an author might be expected to specialize in a single genre. Because of my passionate love of reading, I was eager to write everything from fantasy to romance to adventure.

Initially, my love of Jane Austen inspired half a dozen Regency romances. Then my agent encouraged me to write contemporary romantic comedies as well. Only later, at a writing seminar, did I come across the concept of branding oneself. Not, I hasten to add, in the painful manner of ranch animals, yet to me the notion of being strait-jacketed for the rest of my career burned like fire.

However, writers live in the real world. Our grocers, medical providers and landlords expect to be paid now, not on that mythical day when we hit the bestseller list. Unless we score big from the start (very rare), or have some other means of paying the bills, we have to respect commercial considerations

Here’s the conflict: Publishers have very specific ideas about what kind of books they want to buy. But an author who writes books she doesn’t believe in risks alienating her readers and burning out creatively.RancherNanny400_2

It’s been more than thirty years since the publication of my first novel, the Regency romance Lady in Disguise (of which I’m giving away three ebook copies today). I’ve sold 100 novels, and learned a few things.

Chief among them is that those of us who intend to stay in the writing business and not go broke have to strike a balance. For me, that has meant finding a way to write in a range of genres that I enjoy, from medical romances to zany comedies to mysteries, pleasing both publishers and myself.

For the past few years, I’ve been writing the Safe Harbor Medical series, set in and around a fertility hospital, for Harlequin American Romance. The 15th book in my series, The Baby Bonanza, came out in March. Each book stands alone, although there are continuing characters that are fun to follow. And yes, I love the world of Safe Harbor and the subgenre of medical romance.

BabyBonanza_(253x400)_2 Over the years, I’ve also indulged my love of screwball comedies, including The Rancher’s Unusual Nanny, which is on sale this week for 99 cents at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Although it was originally published by Harlequin, I’ve regained the rights and updated the details.

Along the way, I ventured into mysteries (Danger Music, among others) and romantic suspense (including The Stolen Bride). And every now and then a truly off-the-wall idea strikes me that won’t let go.

The description of my science fiction thriller Out of Her Universe shows how unusual it is: “Strange perceptions trouble artist Hannah Fleischer, who has no idea she’s from another universe. Brought as a child from a parallel world where history has taken a dangerously different course, she believes she’s found happiness with a handsome police detective. But when the universes unexpectedly reconnect, cascading events thrust Hannah into a crisis that could destroy both her worlds.”

As you can see, this is about as far from a Harlequin series romance as an author can stretch. Writing it refreshed my UniverseNew400_2enthusiasm for my craft, without detracting from my ability to continue with medical romances.

Also, although my books cover a wide range of moods and styles, each contains my trademarks—plots with surprise twists, characters who grow and change, a focus on emotional relationships with minimal bedroom scenes (or none, in my Regencies), and fast-paced dialogue.

So, in a sense, I have established a brand of my own while out there writing the range. All my stories and characters reveal aspects of myself, but, I hope, are much more interesting!

Giveaway: 3 ebook copies of Lady in Disguise, a traditional Regency

From The Rancher’s Unusual Nanny:

The blurb:

In Jacqueline Diamond’s The Rancher’s Unusual Nanny, psychologist Nancy Verano promises to spend the summer as a nanny on a Texas ranch, secretly bailing out her unreliable younger sister. She never meant to trick handsome rancher Max Richter, but she has to publish or perish. So, while fulfilling her sister’s job contract, she decides to research an article on cowboys. Just as she starts to fall for Max, though, she learns that he’s hated psychologists ever since his first wife ran off with their marriage counselor. What will happen when he learns the truth about Nancy?

The situation: Having flown from California to Texas, Nancy is met at the airport by her new employer and his children.

 Excerpt:

Only the tanned skin, jeans and yoked shirt matched her expectation of what a rancher looked like. Otherwise, he had nothing in common with the crew-cut, muscle-bound, tight-faced lout she’d anticipated.

He was a lean six foot three, she estimated, with thick brown hair that softened the commanding effect of his high-boned face. Even from a distance, she could feel the melting effect of those intelligent, chocolate eyes. As for his full mouth, it looked as if it wanted to smile, but rarely did.

The man’s gaze flicked over her and stopped. An instant connection sizzled through Nancy, all the way down to her toenails.

Time to step forward and make a good impression. “Mr. Richter?” she asked, moving toward him. “I’m Ms. Verano. And these must be the children. Well, of course, they’re children. What else would they be? Did you all have a nice flight? I mean, I certainly did.”

There, she’d handled that with aplomb, Nancy thought. She smiled, held out her hand and awaited his response.

An Interview with Patrice Wilton

3bookset1700x1073-1Patrice will give copies to three lucky winners who sign up for her newsletter at www.patricewilton.com.

How did you get started writing?

I loved to read from the age of twelve on, and decided that if I had one gift, it would be to give back to the world the pleasure of books. My second passion was to discover the world that I wanted to write about. I became a flight attendant for seventeen years, married and then traveled the world with my husband and family. We moved from Canada to Australia for six years, and then to England for three. My children were in school, and I was unable to work in these foreign countries so I decided that the time had come. If I wanted to write, what was I waiting for?? I sat down and wrote my first book– in longhand! A Harlequin romance that was firmly rejected. Who knew that they couldn’t have a married hero? I mean, it was the eighties!! lol. After 20 years of writing, and hundreds of rejection, I found an agent who believed in me, and success as a writer.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write contemporary romance, Women’s Fiction and Romantic comedy. I love all three. They allow me to explore female bonding and the power of friendships, emotional issues, the joy of falling in love over and over again, and to showcase my sense of humor that shocks me at times!

Tell us about your current series.

I have had such positive response with my SERENDIPITY FALLS series and they have been so much fun to write. They are light, sexy, and fun—with a mischievous Cupid who watches over the sweet mountain town in the foothills of Mammoth, California. People believe there’s a love bug in the spring water, or some mysterious force at work. In a town of ten thousand, there’s several weddings a month and divorce is non existent. This collection completes the series, but I’m taking Cupid on the road—to Vegas. This will be another fun, sexy, lol series, hopefully to debut this summer.

What inspired your latest book?

I am currently working on another new series, and the setting is in the Florida Keys. Three young women (sisters) and their mother are running a small seaside resort. They lost their father in the Twin Towers, and living in a small, laid back community gives the eldest daughter (first book) a feeling of safety that she never had living in the city, after 9/11. A Boston cardiac surgeon arrives on his sailboat and books a cottage for three months. He lost his daughter to Leukemia and his marriage to grief. He makes his living mending broken hearts, but he can’t heal his own.

Aw…. don’t you just love it!!!!

What is your favorite part of writing?

The creative journey – discovering who these people are, what they want, and what’s going to happen to keep them from getting it. At some point during the story, I come to a complete halt, and think this is terrible, I have no conflict, where am I going, and then I magically figure it out!

What is your least favorite part of writing?

All of the above!

What is your next project and when will it be released?

My next project is my Paradise Cove series, and I hope it will be released this summer, but it’s in the hands of my agent, so it could take a lot longer!

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

My experience with self-publishing has been wonderful! I never really made it until Kindle came along, and then readers found me! My first book on Kindle, Replacing Barnie, is the first book in my successful Candy Bar series, and it went all the way down to a ranking of 300—out of a million books!) without any help from me. Readers found my books, they loved my stories, and validated me as an author. It was the most rewarding thing of all to read the beautiful reviews, which I do everyday, and know that I achieved my childhood dream. I can make people laugh, and cry, and bring them the joy of reading. Oh, happy me, I am so very blessed!

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

I advise anyone who has a well written, edited book with a professional cover to take that leap of faith and put it up there for the world of readers to discover. If you don’t, who will?

Tell us a little about yourself and your latest book.

I moved to West Palm Beach after a divorce in 2000. I met a wonderful man, a retired golf pro and we have been together for ten years. Between us we have 4 grown children, and are blessed with 10 wonderful grandchildren, a constant joy and delight. I play tennis, golf, and write nearly every single day. I made the USA Today best seller list with two popular box sets last year. I’m am still working hard and fulfilling my dreams!

For anyone who is not published and still holding on to that dream —DON’T GIVE UP! It took me years and years of heartache and rejections, but when I finally found that small, glimmer of success, it made the entire journey worthwhile. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it!!!!

PROLOGUE

I’m Cupid. You know, that cute, angelic little body that floats around with a tiny bow and arrow? Well, let me tell you something-it’s not so cute when you’re 180 years old. Not in human life, but in Cupid life. We live to be at least 500 or so and give joy and love to the humans who don’t even know we’re here.

Not that I’m grumpy, but this sure is a thankless job. If you have a moment I’ll tell you why. I live in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. It’s a pretty place and a tourist spot due to the spectacular, two hundred foot waterfall that streams down the side of the mountain and pools into an emerald green lake. It’s the last place to fuel up, stretch your legs, or grab a bite to eat before you reach the ski hills at Mammoth, and that mountain is sure aptly named. We’re talking gigantic, with the highest elevation of any ski area around–over 11,000 feet, and if that doesn’t scare you, nothing will.

I tried playing Cupid up there because I like the cool mountain air, and I was fed up with competing in “the big city” with Cupids younger than me, but that didn’t work out. To be honest, I’m scared of heights, so I skedaddled out of there and ended up in this idyllic town. For all my grouching, I’m sure glad I did. The population is small so you’d think I’d get bored and move on, but that’s not the case.

We have a brand spanking new mall that’s attracting visitors to the area, and it has sporting good shops, snazzy boutiques and a slew of big name stores, like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, a Macy’s, even Sears too. There’s also a Multiplex movie theatre, an ice-skating rink, and several restaurants to satisfy your appetite.

I have plenty of people to use as target practice, but still, for all the zapping I do I never get any credit. That’s my biggest beef with this place. The town folk boast about their falls and the natural spring water, and how romance blooms in Serendipity. I listen to them marvel about the unnatural amount of weddings, and I want to stamp my feet. Yes, I do have feet, pointy little ears, and a perfectly good bow and arrow, which I should use to pierce their backsides with. Perhaps, then I’d get some respect!

The only day I ever get recognition is Valentine’s Day, and for me that’s Christmas, Easter, every memorable holiday wrapped into one. I celebrate by binging on chocolate, and although I haven’t met a truffle I didn’t like, I’m especially partial to Godiva. Oh, dear, I got side-tracked, didn’t I?

What I was saying is that in a town of ten thousand, we’re having at least one wedding a month, and they think the water is responsible for that? Come on! I’m  shooting pink darts, and I’m not so old that my aim’s off either. I alternate my time between the mall and the restaurant across from the falls where I have the best view, the best leftover nibbles, and can see all the travelers who come through the door.

If you don’t believe me, come by and see for yourself.

Oh, wait. Someone just walked in. A pretty young lady. She’s alone and looks distraught. I better wander over and hear her story. You might want to listen in.

Chimera’s Kiss by Michele Callahan

Blurb:
Forbidden son of Itara, Nicodemus, knows what it means to walk in darkness. For hundreds of years as a Triscani Lord, he led a small army of lost sons, always struggling to maintain some semblance of control over his warriors and their frightening power. Now Nicodemus and his army have been reborn as Darkwalkers, warriors sworn in service to protect three worlds. Their highest priority is to protect the human females, the Timewalker descendants on Earth, from the now dead Itaran Queen’s vengeful daughter and the host of Immortal bounty killers she commands. When a Seer’s forewarning leads him and his Darkwalker brothers to Colorado to save an innocent human female, all hell breaks loose. He’s too late and suddenly the terror-inspiring dark power he wielded for centuries has deserted him. Without it, he’s lost, weak, but determined to protect the Timewalker, Haley Miller. Unfortunately, the stubborn female won’t cooperate and, no matter how much he tries to ignore the pull between them, she Marks him, claiming him. But Nicodemus is no mere human male.Haley Miller is a free spirit, a part-time college student with nothing more on her mind than fun, friends, and graduation. That is, until the day the spaceship appeared over Denver and the unusual birthmark on her shoulder went crazy. The government lied and tried to cover up the sudden alien appearance with an interesting tale of a Hollywood prank. But Haley knows better. She can feel the aliens now, and so can her cousin. When Haley wakes up in the middle of the night with an alien bounty killer in the house, she will do anything to protect her family.

Prepared to lie, cheat death, and steal the unimaginable power of an alien male who claims he was sent to save her, Haley is drawn into a dangerous world she never imagined existed, but she refuses to be a pawn in an alien war. She will stop at nothing to save her cousin and give her Marked Mate exactly what he needs…freedom. She’s a Timewalker, after all. It should be a simple thing to travel back in time to prevent her cousin’s death, even if that means the scarred warrior she’s grown to love won’t remember her at all.

But in love, and in war, nothing ever goes according to plan…

Chimera’s Kiss by Michele Callahan – An Excerpt:

Haley Miller’s eyelids popped open and she stared at the dark ceiling fan that rotated in quiet circles over her head. She was frozen in place by a cold numbness that flowed into her limbs. The icy dread bloated her psychic senses like helium filling a balloon.

Someone’s in the house.

She turned her head to quickly scan her small bedroom from where she lay sprawled in bed. The red numbers on her digital alarm clock read 3:23 a.m. Her desk was littered with books. The hardwood floor and tattered throw rug were bare but for the slip-on shoes she’d kicked off earlier. Frayed and worn through in places, her burnt-orange backpack leaned on the wall next to the closed door. Everything was shadowy and undisturbed except for the steady whirring comfort of the small ceiling fan rotating in the same, steady rhythm that normally lulled her to sleep.

But something was very, very wrong.

She’d been dreading feeling this again, ever since those stupid alien spaceships had shown up over the U.S. a few weeks ago. That was the day she realized her odd birthmark was connected to something not of this world. Something foreign to the Earth completely. Something from another place.

The spaceship had settled over Denver, floating in the sky like something out of a Star Wars movie, and her birthmark had literally heated on her arm until it felt like she was being branded. The circular mark then turned three shades darker and she’d felt an odd buzzing, like it was saying “Hello” to an old friend on some super-secret, inaudible frequency, and she just happened to be the radio.

She’d looked up into the sky from the front porch of her Boulder home to where one of the three spaceships had hovered like a giant floating wasp, and accepted that life as she knew it was over.

Haley had spent the rest of that day hiding in her house like a coward. And, just like nearly every other person on the planet, she’d stayed glued to her TV until it was over. Washington D.C., Denver, and Los Angeles had all been invaded. When the spaceships left a few hours after they’d appeared, she’d nearly fainted with relief.

The government had tried to spin it almost immediately. With only three spaceships, and those only seen over three U.S. cities, it had been easy for the spin doctors to convince most of the world that the whole event was nothing more than a Hollywood propaganda stunt to promote a new science fiction movie coming out later in the year. The majority of Earth’s inhabitants had swallowed the lie hook, line and sinker.

She didn’t believe a single word of it. And neither did her cousin, Danielle, or her best friend, Makayla. The three of them all had one little problem with the movie angle. The new, darker marks in their skins. All three of them had felt something that day. Something bizarre and haunting, because after that, things had gotten weird.

Haley would have bet her life that whoever, or whatever was on those ships, they weren’t friendly, peace-loving, cute little Ewoks from her parents’ old-school Star Wars movie.

The feeling of dread, of evil, she’d had that day flowed through her now, stronger and more frightening than anything she’d ever felt before. She struggled to breathe, and her hands shook like dried aspen leaves in the wind.

“Danielle.” Her barely there whisper got her moving. She threw aside the covers and sat up. Her cousin’s room was at the end of the hall. Haley barely spared a thought for their other two roommates in this rambling, two-story rental home. The other two girls didn’t have the alien birthmarks from hell on their skins, couldn’t feel the aliens’ presence. Not like her cousin, Danielle, who could not only sense their presence, but catch snippets of their freakish thoughts as well.

Their roommates thought the spaceship’s arrival had been, “freaking awesome”. Haley and Dani had been hiding, drinking shots and hoping to feel normal again. Their roomies had hopped in their car and headed downtown, to get closer. They’d believed the Hollywood lie, and Haley hadn’t been able to summon the energy to try to convince them of the truth.

The dark energy rolling through Haley’s body right now left no doubt in her mind that they were in big trouble. She climbed out of bed, her hot-pink pajama shorts and tank all that covered her as she tiptoed, barefoot, to her bedroom door.

Pressing her ear to the old wood, she listened for a few moments, but heard nothing. She lifted her head to scan the room for a weapon. No knives. No gun. Damn. She had the aluminum baseball bat that had once belonged to her younger brother. Her mother had pressed it into her hands and insisted she take it with her when she’d moved into the dorms on campus six years ago. A stupid Little League baseball bat. Hardly a weapon of choice against an alien home invasion.

Better than nothing.

She grabbed the bat and slowly opened her door so she could step into the dark hallway.

Interview with Veronica Scott

Thanks for having me as your guest today!

MissionToM2-FJM_Mid_Res_1000x1500Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?

As a matter of fact – drum roll, please – as of March 1st I’m taking early retirement from my job at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab to become a fulltime author! Going to live the dream and I’m very excited. I’ve been cleaning out my office for the past few weeks, in fact. I told my boss the critical success factor for the retirement party would be a really good chocolate cake, so I hope he delivers on that. I worked on special business projects in the area of the Lab where we wrote contracts for everything from services to office supplies to parts for Mars Rovers. It was a fun career but my heart was in writing romance novels.

Cindy: Congratulations on what must be a scary move. But I know you’ll find it most rewarding.

How did you get started writing?

I started writing when I was seven, because there just weren’t enough books around that I wanted to read. My first epic tale featured flying cats, flying horses, princesses galore, and a riverboat captain as the hero. And I just kept writing. In 2010, when my daughters were grown and out on their own, I decided to get serious about learning my craft and really working to become published.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write science fiction romances set in the far future and I write a paranormal series set in ancient Egypt. I’m fascinated by both eras. My Dad was the science fiction influence as I grew up. My Mom had all the Time-Life book on ancient civilizations, and the “sword and sandal” novels. I just thought there needed to be more romance in everything!

How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite?

I’ve got seven books published – two from Carina Press and the other five independently published. I usually say my favorite is my most recent book, but Wreck of the Nebula Dream, my retelling of the sinking of Titanic, set in the far future in outer space, is also a favorite. (And just recently it was favorably reviewed by Dear Author, which was a thrill.)

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

I LOVE self-publishing. In fact, Wreck of the Nebula Dream was my first venture into self-publishing. I’d written the novel before selling my first ancient Egyptian romance to Carina Press. After the flurry of edits and getting the other book released with Carina, I realized 2012 was the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking. There wasn’t time to submit the book to anyone and get it published, not even Carina, so I dove into the independent publishing world. I enjoy the total control over my books – I pick the cover, I write to my own deadlines, I can tell the stories I want to tell, the books can be as long or as short as I feel they need to be, I set the prices and do the promo that seems appropriate (and fun!). And of course I’m not sharing royalties with a publisher. I learned a great deal from working with Carina and I enjoyed that experience, but indie publishing really appeals to me.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

Publishing is a business and when you publish independently, you’re the person who has to make everything happen. That’s the joy and the reality. I love the creative writing part but I recognize the need to hire strong editors, copy editors, find cover artists (although I’m fortunate to work with two of the best – Fiona Jayde and Frauke of Croco Designs), have the formatting done, upload the books to the ebook retailers myself, troubleshoot problems…And you have to do promo for your books. That part holds true whether you’re published or independently, but it is something to remember.

Give us an elevator pitch for your book.

My most recently published science fiction romance is Mission to Mahjundar. “Blind princess going to her loveless arranged marriage meets Special Forces soldier whose orders don’t include falling in love. When the inevitable happens and they do fall in love, the entire planet is set against them.”

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Before I begin, I usually know the opening and closing scenes of the book, who the hero and heroine are, a few major scenes along the way…and then I just start writing and the story fills itself in as I go and get to know my characters even better. So pretty much a pantster! If I plot the story out in too much detail ahead of doing the actual writing, my Muse feels I’m already done and then I can’t write. The creativity evaporates.

Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

I love being able to share my stories with readers! There’s nothing as satisfying as hearing from someone that they enjoyed the book, or they really related to one of the characters, or that they want more about a certain character.

Here’s a short excerpt from Mission to Mahjundar:

Mike Varone, Sectors Special Forces, saved the Princess Shalira’s life during a terrorist incident shortly after arriving on her planet. Shalira maneuvers her father into ordering Mike to accompany her on the journey to her arranged marriage, much to Mike’s displeasure. He has a mission to carry out that has nothing to do with Shalira. He goes to argue with her.

“Would you let the life you saved be lost so soon?” Tears shimmered in the depths of her unseeing brown eyes as she turned her face directly to him. Mike couldn’t look away, even though he knew she wasn’t actually seeing him, or his reactions. He put his glass on the table too hard, cracking the base.

“There are those who don’t want me to reach my wedding. The palace rustles with rumors of plots, schemes in motion to take advantage of this final opportunity to kill me. Once I’m safe with my bridegroom-to-be, I’ll be beyond the schemers’ reach, but I have to get to him.” Shalira rubbed her elegant fingers across the pendant as if it were an amulet giving her strength. “I hope that if you ride with me, those who plan my murder will be afraid to proceed under the attention of outworlders.”

What do I say to this? He hadn’t anticipated an appeal along these dramatic lines. “Do you think the bomb yesterday was an attempt to assassinate you?”

“No, assuredly Maralika was the target.” Shalira shook her head. “The empress is pursuing a host of unpopular actions—forbidding the older forms of worship, tearing down temples, forcing the people to pay taxes to her new gods, consolidating power for herself and her son. My father is not a well man, Major. Everyone knows he doesn’t have long to live, and she plans to rule when he’s gone.”

“But there’s opposition to her?” Mike was aware there was. Planetary politics had been a prominent part of his briefing, but he was curious how much Shalira might add.

“Her son is the heir since my brother was murdered, but the throne of Mahjundar has often been claimed by bloodshed rather than by rule of law. I have to get away from here, before the emperor dies.” She laughed, the sound bitter. “Playing the Princess of Shadows won’t protect me after his death.”

“Princess of Shadows?” Nothing about that in our briefing. He remembered the empress had also used the term to refer to Shalira.

“It’s an old folktale about a girl of royal blood who hid from her enemies in the shadows of the palace walls, disguised as a beggar, until her true love rescued her.” Gesturing to her eyes, Shalira said, “It’s meant as an insult to me, since I can’t see, not even shadows, and I’ve lived the past fifteen years on the fringes of the court, out of the ‘sun.’ I’m tolerated, protected only because my mother was the emperor’s Favorite till she died. If I reach the safety of my bridegroom’s people, then I’ll be safe, free of the empress’s plotting and hate. My mother’s clan is among his subjects.” Shalira blinked hard, and then her face crumpled as she wept.

Writing an Amish series! by Diane Craver

Thank you so much for having me here today, Cindy.

ADecisionofFaithFinal600x900I’m happy to share with you today  why I decided to write an Amish series, and reasons I enjoy writing in this particular genre. If you are unaware of the popularity of Amish fiction, you are not alone. When I published my first bonnet romance (term given sometimes to Amish romances), my daughter didn’t expect me to do well in sales. Then one day she happened to see  Amish paperbooks in the book section in a grocery store. She was amazed at the large number of them, and realized I had made a smart decision in my writing career.

Everyone knows how the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy continues to dominate the sales charts, but books on the other end of the spectrum are still selling well. Amish romances draw readers hungry for wholesome stories and simple values. I’ve had several Christian readers tell me that they always feel safe buying an Amish book because they know it will be sweet. Before I  attempted to write an Amish story, I did a lot of research in 2011 to learn as much as I could about their beliefs and their lifestyles. We happen to live about forty minutes away from an Amish district so that’s been helpful. By the way, my great-grandfather was a Mennonite minister plus I had already written Christian fiction so I realized my personal faith would also help me to write my first Amish romance.

I submitted my first Amish book to a well-known agent representing several best-selling Amish authors. She asked me to send her by snail mail the full manuscript which I did in 2011. After I waited for a few months, I emailed her and asked her the status of my submission. She said it was never received. I knew it had been delivered because I had the tracking slip showing it had arrived. She asked me to send it again. When the second one became lost, I lost confidence in her and her office staff, but agreed to email the manuscript. She liked it but wanted me to make a change in the story line. I didn’t want to take the major conflict out of the story, so I decided to self-publish A Joyful Break, book one in my Amish series in 2012.

Writing my first Amish series has been a lot of work but also enjoyable. I can’t say goodbye to the characters in this series because they have become real to me, so they will be included in my next series…like a spin-off. The title of the new series is The Bishop’s Daughters.

I recently released the final book A Decision of Faith in my Dreams of Plain Daughters Series. Here is the blurb for it:

Two worlds…

Violet Robinson grew up straddling the world of her father, a U.S. Senator, and her mother, who was raised Amish. Then Violet gets the chance to live in an Amish house without modern amenities. Violet’s father hopes this will make her realize how hard an Amish life is, but the opposite happens. Especially when Violet finds herself falling for Luke.

A world apart…

Although buggy shop owner Luke King was raised Amish, he hasn’t yet been baptized into the church. He’s always felt something waited out there for him. When he meets Violet, he knows why God set him on this path. Had he already been baptized, he’d be shunned for courting the  non-Amish Violet.

United by love…

While Violet’s learning the realities of living in the Amish world, Luke indulges in the opportunity to live in the English world, risking his family’s wrath. Violet fears Luke won’t be able to leave his faith. But can she live in the stricter and simpler Amish world? As the feelings between Violet and Luke grow deeper, can they overcome their dissimilar lifestyles or will their  differences pull them apart? But when violence from Violet’s past threatens, they discover that faith succeeds where all else fails, and two worlds may be joined by two loving hearts.

Short excerpt from A DECISION OF FAITH:

Violet had seen sadness flash in her mother’s eyes at different times whenever she talked about Fields Corner. Now her mother seemed happier and laughed a lot while they were living close to their Amish relatives.  If she left her Kentucky home and didn’t return to college, would she have regrets like her mother must have at times? Would leaving her life completely to become Amish cause her heartache later in life? Violet wondered.

“There’s something I need to tell you. My dat wants me to start instructions to join the church.”

“But how can you? Your father already started the baptism classes.” Violet knew that Luke had planned on being in the class this spring with her cousin Judith. All that changed when they met each other after a church service. She had attended church with the Hershberger family. Visiting her uncle and cousins that particular weekend had caused the major change in her life and Luke’s. Falling in love with someone from a completely different lifestyle is definitely a challenge.

Luke exhaled a deep breath. “Daed said it’s not too late and I can get caught up with the rest of the class. I’m not going to do it. It’s been a sore spot between us for the last few years. As the eldest in the family, my dat reminded me that I should’ve been the first to join our church. He told me that my rumspringa has lasted too long. I wished he understood that it wasn’t because I wanted to run around longer and do non-Amish things, but because it seemed like I needed to wait.”

“I’m glad you waited.” What if Luke had been baptized when she first had met him? They both were drawn to each other immediately. Would he been able to risk shunning to date her?

Luke continued,  “I never felt it was the right time. A strong feeling made me think there was an important reason I needed to give it more time before joining our faith. You already know the reason God wanted me to wait. If I had listened to Daed instead of following my gut, I’d be kicked out of the house and shunned now.  Obviously, I’m glad I didn’t join because it’d be hard to be shunned by my family while dating you.”

Feeling Luke’s arm around her shoulder gave her a lot of pleasure, but hearing him again say  that she must be the reason for waiting to become Amish meant even more to her. But another thought occurred to her. “Did your dad mention you should stop seeing me?”

Luke’s blue eyes widened as he cleared his throat. “Ya, but you know he’s mentioned that right from the beginning. I’m sorry. I reminded him again that we aren’t going to stop dating.”

“Oh, Luke, what are we going to do?” Violet wanted Luke in her future, but could she give up her whole way of life to be with him? Or could Luke decide to become English? She’d never asked Luke if he’d consider going to her Protestant church because ever since she’d moved to Fields Corner, she’d attended the Amish services every other Sunday.

Thank you for reading my excerpt. I’m giving away a print copy of my new release, A DECISION OF FAITH, to one random commenter. Or if the winner prefers the ebook format, that will be substituted.
