How Long Does it Take to Write an Epic Series?

Please help me welcom A.H. De Carrasco to my blog today. She’s written a great post for us today and is giving away a $5 Amazon gift card to one reader who answers the question below. Be sure and leave her the answer in your comments in order to be entered.

New_Book_One_03_MED_2HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO WRITE AN EPIC SERIES?

My answer? As long as it has to take. No more. No less.

And I mean every word of that answer above. As long as it has to take. One does not rush an epic tale. It took me a very long time to understand that each story has different needs. If I could tell the old me what the present me knows about these things, I would pat her on the back and say, “Trust in your instincts.”

What works for one book’s fermentation, might be lethally poisonous to another. And fussing about that won’t help any, either. Anxiety only adds to all the troubles ahead. So don’t apologize for the long weeks, months–yikes!–years of curing. Understand they are sometimes necessities of the process.

Think I know what I am talking about? I’ve been working on my Teller of Destiny™ Series for twenty-six years. Yes. Twenty-six years. I have well over half a million words devoted to that world and that world needs every single one of them. Every single one. Plus I’ve made maps, charts, lineages, glossaries, floor plans–you name it–I got it.

I had the series arch in my head, and the climaxes and points of no return scribbled on napkins and office scrap paper when I began to put it all together and write it out longhand, then on computer. When I read through the three-book trilogy (at that time), I wept. It was terrible. Not the story, but my writing. I should have known this was what writers call a first draft–the draft we are allowed to write as almost pure shi@t. But I knew my writing had to improve greatly to honor the story I wanted to tell. I let the books gather dust, while I took classes. Three years later, I wrote through it again. Then I waited another five. Then wrote and revised again. Much like a hair artist checks the bleach’s progress. All the time, adding subplots and supporting characters, I knew where I was going–I knew my destination–as a gut feeling.

I work this same way in animation. Doing compositing, and lighting, and rendering. Problem solving. It’s a feeling I get when it is all put together–the finishing touch– just exactly as it is supposed to be. Only I can really know when that moment has been reached. Of course, in the daily grind of commercial animation that means extra hours out of my own time, because there are deadlines that cannot be avoided. I enjoy much more the game developers’ philosophy. ‘It will get done when it gets done.’ But if, like me, this is your philosophy, then your epic creation better well be completely created before you talk about deadlines for “upcoming” books.

In fact, if anyone were to ask me for advice on writing an epic series, I would tell them not to publish the first book until the last word of the last book was written down. Sure revisions will come. I’m still editing and tweaking. But I have heard many readers will not start on a series until it is complete. They have been burned too many times with series than did not finish. That’s a sad thing–hopefully a sad thing of the past now that we have indie-publishing. A writer can always finish up her series, even if a publisher withdraws support. We owe it to our readers. I’m serious. My husband knows where my keys and codes are, so in the terrible occasion of my untimely demise, the story can go on.

How do you know when your stories are ready? Answer in comments to be entered into a $5 Amazon GC giveaway. Thank you for stopping by! And thank you, Cynthia, for having me here today.

From Continue Blurb:

“I saw the dead king…burn,” Raphere whispered to the voices. She lifted her chin. “Why would I see such a thing, if not to prevent it?”
“There are many kings in the land, and all kings die eventually. You are more important than any.”
Did they think to keep her here, forever? In the Pikestan? But she was not safe. And she could do nothing for anyone. But as a wanderer…
———
Ever since spilling her blood before the Teller of Destiny, Raphere has spent her life trying to prove she is not like her mother, a dark sorceress. And though she yearns to be, she is not a white wanderer either. She is the Jivasivar, the first grey soul born into the land since sin and the Changing. Some call her savior; others, assassin. One thing is clear: everyone has a plan for Raphere. Few seem to care about what is best for her–only what she might gain or cost them.

To the visitors in the Pikestan, she is a target for their cruelty. To the voices of the weald, she is a precious angel and a last chance at life. To the Dark Lord Verisa, she is a spoiled girl and an unwanted burden. To the mercenary Rant Pae, she is a comely maiden and a promised bounty. To the Highland witch Rumara, she is a puzzle to decipher from afar. To the Teller of Destiny, which revealed the grey of Raphere’s soul, she is the Great All’s long awaited Sword and Shield. Amidst such judgment, can a young woman with young girl’s dreams choose her own path correctly?

Searching for her purpose Raphere embarks upon a journey to find the white wanderer Tranquia and the Jivan Tome–the Divine Poem which promised Raphere’s emergence, centuries ago. She must discern friend from foe as all strive to manipulate her for their own designs. Does she have the conviction to be the Jivasivar or is she merely a pawn in a fight for the survival of both ancients and kings? With the Jivan Tome out of reach, and her destiny as clouded as her grey blood, will she bend to the manipulations of others and take a path that leads to the destruction of all?

Writing That Look of Love by Laura Haley-McNeil

Please help me welcome Lauri Haley-McNeil to my blog today. Laura is generously giving away a $10 ebook card to one lucky commentor that she will chose. So be sure and leave her a comment to be entered.

Prelude_and_Fugue_cover_2 As writers, we all know how important it is to capture the emotions of our characters. The question I always ask myself is: How does my character feel?
Writing on the computer is miraculous because when I have a question, I can easily look up the answer on the internet. So how did I find the answer to how my character(s) feel? YouTube.

There are a couple of television shows I like to watch. One is The Good Wife. Two characters from the show intrigue me: Cary and Kalinda. (Never mind that Kalinda is bi.)

I was searching YouTube for facial expressions and typed in Cary’s name. Bumcrackmosh182 and others have compiled excerpts of the scenes with Cary and Kalinda together with background music. Kalinda is cool toward Cary, but Cary is so over the top in love with her it drives me crazy. http://youtu.be/GSmogQQPPyw

Two other characters I like to view on YouTube are Mary and Matthew from Downton Abbey. Lolilie has compiled excerpts of their scenes. http://youtu.be/dGPAYL5MQT4

When I look at these videos, I’m analyzing everything I see: the eyes, the mouth, the tilt of the character’s chin, their posture. Are the characters standing close together? Is there distance emotionally and physically? Is there longing? Have the characters given up? Will they walk away from each other? Have they realized this love was never meant to be but they can still love from afar? As you can see, my questions never stop.

As viewers, we can interpret anything we want in what we view. As actors, it’s important to them that they portray the correct emotion and so they work hard to make sure that we the viewer feel what they project. As writers, we struggle with the precise word that will convey what we want the reader to feel.

If you’re looking for emotions besides love, YouTube has thousands of videos depicting a broad range of emotion from fear to hate to joy to depression.

Have you found others? I’d love to hear about them. I’ll have a drawing and send a $10 ebook gift card to one lucky commenter.

BLURB
Olivia St. Claire accomplishes her dream to become a pianist, but didn’t count on falling in love with the man she can never have.

EXCERPT

“Liam Wallace?” Panic burst through me as I forced confidence into my voice, lifted my chin, and looked at the towering figure filling the doorway. My clammy hands gripped a briefcase weighted with ancient piano books. It knocked against my knees as I stood on his terraced front porch in the fading sunlight of a cool, Denver afternoon.

Though his eyes never left mine, I knew he was making the observations everyone makes about me: small, timid, weak.

“Yes.” His lean physique bore an oxford shirt and soft wool trousers, but my gaze was immediately drawn to the mass of salt and pepper curls.

“I’m Olivia St. Claire. I had called about the piano lessons.”

“Of course.” He opened the door.

I stepped into the tiled foyer paneled in dark wood. Through the arched doorway, I caught a glimpse of cathedral windows overlooking a pristine lawn. Light drifting through leaded glass splashed across a Persian carpet.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” His voice carried a sense of authority, yet was gentle. He extended his hand and I started when his cuff lifted to reveal a thin scar that crossed his palm.

Cool strength closed around my fingers and unintelligible words tumbled from my mouth that would have said I was glad to meet him.

“You brought your music, I see.” His hand released mine, which reluctantly floated to the briefcase.

Unwanted sensations rushed through me, but I reminded myself a male piano teacher would have little interest in women.

An Interview with Jean Murray

Please help me welcome Jean Murray to my blog today. As a thank you to those who comment, Jean is giving away an ecopy of her book, Soul Reborn, to one lucky commentor, so be sure and leave her a comment.

soulreborn_1600x2400_2If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be, and why?

Living in a palatial mansion on an island with white sandy beaches and warm blue water. I’m not sure where in the world that would be, maybe the Caribbean or Hawaii. One can only dream 

Have you had other careers before becoming a writer?

A year and half ago, I retired from the military after twenty years of service, as a Navy Nurse. Retirement is a misnomer. I still work full-time as an Infection Preventionist. Writing is somewhat of a second career for me that I fit in between work-children-life.

What inspired your latest book?

My latest release, Soul Awakened, was a labor of love. The last ten years of my military career, I care for military personnel with all sorts of injuries – both physical and psychological from the war and subsequent deployments. So many had PTSD – acute and chronic. Suicide was at its highest in the last few years, despite the military’s efforts to make services easily accessible. I’ll never forget the desperation and pain. Bakari’s world is very much the same for different reasons of course, but his struggles are a culmination of all the sad stories over the years. I dedicated the book to our American heroes.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

I’m working on the third book in the series, Soul Unbound. At the end of Soul Awakened, Bomani soul is broken. He has lost the woman he loves and his faith in honor, a quality that defined him. He escapes to the human realm under a cloud of shame, leaving everything he knows and loves behind. In exchange for hiding in the human realm, Bomani agrees to track an exiled goddess. He is given strict orders to keep his distance. One look at the Goddess of War and he is doomed. She is his every dream and nightmare.

Soul Unbound is due out in the fall of this year.

What is your favorite part of writing?

Escapism, I guess. I can leave the chaos of my life/work behind and get lost in the characters and plot.

What is your least favorite part of writing?

Not having enough time to write. I have too many stories bouncing around in my head and not enough time to write them all down.

How does your family feel about your writing career?

To be honest, I think I shocked everyone, including myself. I didn’t start writing until 2009. I’ve always loved to read, but in my mind’s eye at the time, it didn’t mean that I could write. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had these stories bouncing around in my head. Never once did I think to write them down until 2009. I’m not sure why the change, but I was doing a lot of traveling for work. I woke up one morning with a story fresh on my mind and I just had to write it down. It started with a pen and paper until I could get a hold of my computer. I haven’t stopped since. It was my husband that encouraged me to submit my work. I was buckled down for a hard long journey, but I did not have long to wait. Turns out—I can write. My debut novel, Soul Reborn released in May 2011.

Do you or have you belonged to a writing organization? Which one? Have they helped you with your writing? How?

I belong to RWA, FF&P chapter and ROMVETS. I don’t know what I would have done without these loops, especially FF&P. These organizations provide a forum of authors with an amazing amount of experience and expertise and workshops and networking opportunities that are essential for writers/authors. It is also a support group for when you are down or having trouble with a manuscript. It was during FF&P’s push to PRO that I had venue to pitch to editors. Crescent Moon Press was one of those opportunities that resulted in my contract. If I had not belonged to that chapter, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet my editor and land a contract for my series.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do to combat it?

I did an interview about two months ago and flat out said, “no” to writer’s block. I think I jinxed myself. I’m writing the third book in the series, Soul Unbound. The heroine, Siya, is fabulous. She has an amazing backstory that just sings across the pages. My hero, Bomani, who I love by the way, is coming into the book with a broken heart. He has lost the woman he loves to his brother, someone he despises. Needless to say, he is fighting me, dragging his feet. But, often what I think is trouble ends up being exactly what he is and needs to be, so I continue to push through writing. I can always go back and negotiate with him. LOL.

Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract?

I think the best advice I can pass on is don’t give up. There are so many publishing options out there. I know small press and indie authors that have been become best sellers. Writing takes time and often times I get impatient, but I have to let things run their course. If you do decide to go the route of self-publishing, I strongly recommend hiring an experienced editor. This is your opportunity to hook future publishers and readers. You want that book to shine.

Lastly, enjoy yourself and write about things you love. It will come across in your writing and translate to the reader or editor. This is a wonderfully supportive community, turn to those you trust for help.

Sneak Peek Sunday – Heiress Bride #4

For today’s giveaway, I’m giving an ecopy of Capital Bride, the first in the Matchmaker & Co series. Heiress Bride is book 2 in the series.

Today I’m going to start by giving you the blurb from the back of the book.

heiress_brideHeiress Ella Davenport survived a carriage accident that killed her father. Her life saved in exchange for savage scars marring her beautiful face. Her friends, socialites, showed their true colors, casting Ella aside like damaged goods and leaving her a social pariah. Even her wealth can’t buy her the kind of marriage she wants. Desperate to find a husband who can accept her despite her scars and, without knowing about her money, she seeks to become a mail order bride. Matchmaker & Co. is her one chance to start over and leave the pain and betrayal far behind her.

Nathan Ravenclaw was run out of town by the father of the girl he was courting once he discovered Nathan’s Arapaho heritage. It didn’t matter that Nathan was a successful rancher, businessman, and a positive member of society. The white community suddenly saw only a half-breed. Even his money couldn’t buy him a wife. That was ten years ago. He moved and rebuilt everything that cold rancher once took from him. He has it all…except a wife. Matchmaker & Company promises to send him a woman willing to start a new life with him. But Nathan’s battered heart lacks the ability to trust. He longs for children, not romance. His new bride, scarred and cast aside like himself, promises to be perfect for him. Until he meets his mail order bride. Fierce desire and an even more dangerous hope roar back to life within him. Two things he swore never to indulge in again.

And love? For these two battered souls, that’s the biggest risk of all

Now that you’ve got some background on to today’s six paragraphs.

As they got close, she saw that the ranch house was one story and sprawling. Shaped like a “U” with a courtyard in the center. Nathan pulled up in front of the open center courtyard. They walked through the courtyard straight to the door in the center of the middle side and entered into a foyer there.

“To the right are the parlor, dining room, kitchen and Martha’s bedroom,” said Nathan. “And to the left are the family bedrooms.”

“Let me introduce you to Martha. She’s the one who keeps the place running smoothly. I’m sure you’ll want to take over some of her duties, but I leave that up to the two of you.”

They headed to the kitchen where Ella saw a short, middle-aged woman with beautiful black hair and sparkling brown eyes.

“Ah, you are the missus for my Nathan.”

“Your Nathan?” Ella looked back and forth between Nathan and Martha. “Are you his mother?”

An Interview with Janis Susan May Patterson

Please help me welcome Janis Susan May Patterson to my blog today. She’s given me a great interview which I know you’ll enjoy. She’s also giving away a $5 Amazon gift card to one lucky commentor, so be sure and leave her a comment.

Hollow_house_final_cover_2Tell us about yourself.

Oooh, that’s a dangerous first question! I can talk about myself forever… The short version is, I’m proud to be a seventh generation Texan. In my 50s I married the world’s most wonderful man – a Naval officer several years younger than I. It was my first marriage and he had been single for over twenty years; we were the poster children for middle age romance. We’re both also enthusiastic amateur Egyptologists and I don’t think there’s anyone who doesn’t know that he proposed to me in a moonlit garden in Egypt. I was one of the original 40 or so women who began RWA. I’m also a member of MWA, NINC and Author’s Guild. I published my first novel in 1979. I’ve been a talent agent, an actress and singer, a jewelry designer, Supervisor of Accessioning for a bio-genetic DNA lab (not easy when I’ve never taken a science course in my life), editor in chief of two multi-magazine publishing groups, edited and published the only monthly publication for The American Research Center in Egypt in the world (for nine years at least)… and that’s the short list. Yes, I bore easily. I’ve raced cars, flown planes and am a serious shooting enthusiast. Now I’m a very happy Stepford wife who loves staying home, cooking, gardening and looking after The Husband – best job I ever had. Oh, and I have been writing books since 1979.

How did you get started writing?

Genetically. I’m not kidding. One of my grandfathers was a small town newspaper publisher, back when that was a position of power. Both my grandmothers were English/literature teachers. My mother was a teacher, a play producer, and a magazine columnist, among other, non-literary things. My father started in his father’s newspaper as a printer’s devil when he was nine. He edited and published newspapers in several Texas towns, then taught journalism at Texas A&M. He was instrumental in separating the journalism department from the English department and making it a separate discipline. With my mother, he began an advertising agency that for sixteen of the seventeen years of its existence was rated by AADA in the top three hundred in the country. I started work there when I was nine. You see, I didn’t have a choice but to be a wordsmith of some sort.

Tell us about your current series/WIP.

I never have less than three or four projects underway at any given time. Told you I bore easily! Right now I’m primarily working on a romantic adventure called THE EGYPTIAN FILE, a chase/caper book set in (guess where?) contemporary Egypt about the lost treasure of the Pharaoh Ahmose. Makes me want to pack my bags and go back right now! I’m also working on an English-set gothic called THE WIDOW OF WESTOVER HALL (though that title will have to change), a plain sweet romance called SNOW JOB, a contemporary cozy mystery called A WELL MANNERED MURDER about cold-case murders in a defunct charm school, a cozy mystery set in New Orleans of 1916 called A KILLING ON BASIN STREET and a portion of a scholarly non-fiction college textbook – as yet untitled – about archaeological illustration. My portion is “The History of Archaeological Illustration Before the Napoleonic Paradigm of 1798.” It’s going to be a real page-turner! I’ve also just finished the editing on a traditional Gothic mystery called CURSE OF THE EXILE. It’s set in 1858 Scotland with a remote castle, a brooding laird, a prim and proper female librarian, hidden gold, a ghost called Mad Margaret and a couple of murders. It was great fun to write and is now flying around looking for a home. One most perspicacious reviewer once called me the logical heiress to Phyllis A. Whitney and Virginia Coffman. I hope she’s right!

What inspired your latest book?

Talking about THE EGYPTIAN FILE, it was a graffito in the tomb of Renni in the necropolis of El Kab, which is between Luxor and Aswan. It has been known since the Middle Ages and as soon as I saw it I knew it had to be in a book. Well, as books are organic and grow, it turned out that (with the help of Dr. Dirk Huyge, Director of the Belgian Archaeological Mission to El Kab) I had to invent both a new tomb and a new graffito to fit the needs of my story, but both have archaeological integrity if not physical reality. Most of the story for THE EGYPTIAN FILE came to me while The Husband and I were in Egypt for the month of January in 2010, but I couldn’t really work on it until I cleared the desk of more pressing projects. Our dear friend Dr. Stephen Harvey of Memphis has also been a great help, giving me all kinds of information on the great Pharaoh Ahmose, and in fact changed the direction (for the better!) of the last third of the story.

Beaded_to_Death_cover_2How does your family feel about your writing career?

I’m blessed to have been supported and encouraged by my family. My parents were both word people and loved the idea that I wrote, even in the years when I was concentrating more on traveling and having fun and adventures. When I married, after they were gone, I didn’t know how The Husband would react. He, like all of his family, are science people and writers are both alien and somewhat suspect beings. It took a while, but all of them have generally come around. The Husband is now an enthusiastic supporter, though occasionally bemused, but he’s behind me and my dreams all the way.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

Costly and unremunerative. I am in the process of bringing out my backlist, but although they have been professionally edited, have dynamite covers and are quite good stories, they are just lying there like dead marmots. Of course, I don’t write sexy (to me sex on the page is a dead bore) so that could be part of the problem. However, as some wise person said, ‘this is a marathon and not a sprint’ so my books will be available for a good long time and who knows what will happen?

What was the deciding factor in self-publishing your book(s)? Did you decide on ebook or print only or both?

Thrift, and to a point, a hate of waste. I had the rights back for my old books; they were good books, edited by major houses, and they were just sitting there, gathering metaphoric dust on my hard drive and various other storage locations. I figured that whatever they earned would be more than I have now, so I put them up. Right now I’m only doing ebooks; someday I would like to go into print, but that is a big learning curve and quite frankly I do not have the time right now. Perhaps when The Husband becomes my assistant. At the moment I have too much to do, both in writing and the real world, and feel what time I do have is better spent writing.

All self-pubbed books are rumoured to be shoddily edited. What do you say to that?

Too many are, unfortunately. To me bad/lack of editing just screams ‘Amateur’! I can live with a typo or two (having had a long and intimate association with the Typo Gremlin myself) but scads of them, many misspelled words, lack of coherence in story form, pathetic characterization and, sadly, much more just says the “author” wasn’t doing his job. It’s sad today that so many people are seeking the cachet of “published author” by putting out unbelievable dreck. It makes all of us look bad and, unfortunately, there’s no way to stop them. They wouldn’t dream of doing brain surgery or replacing brake pads or whatever without any training, but ‘hey – anyone can write a book, right?’ It’s things like these that make me grieve for the days of the gatekeepers. At least then there was a pretence of maintaining standards. Sometimes I am very tempted to do a violence to those clueless ones.

TDODH_WEB_small_-_142k_2Do you have a view in your writing space? What does your space look like?

View? You’re kidding, right? I believe that writers should be looking at their writing, not a view. As for my writing space – ! Our house is large, but very weird; it was my mother’s dream house and is not like any other house anywhere as she designed every inch to her peculiar desires – very few but huge rooms, no front door, no side door, two back doors and no hallways at all. Most peculiar. The location, however, is top-notch. The Husband’s office is a small room off the sunroom where, before a minor remodeling, the heater used to live. My ‘office’ is a small desk against one wall in the guest room. It’s as far away from his talk radio and TV as I can get – if I moved any further away, my desk would have to be in the driveway!

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do to combat it?

Other than distraction from family tragedies, when all writing and most everything else goes by the board, not often. If it does strike I get up and get a cup of coffee, or go do my exercises in the hot tub, or walk around for a while and do something else. There’s nothing like housework (which I loathe worse than doing publicity) to make writing look attractive! Then I go back to the computer and, inspired or no, put down a word. Then another. Then another. And keep repeating. It might be absolute rubbish, but generally that primes the pump and I can throw the rubbish out later. If that doesn’t work, or if I’ve been doing nothing but rubbish for a day or two, I put that project aside for my subconscious to work on and take up another. It’s always good to have a back-up plan!

His Southern Temptation by Robin Covington

Robin, thanks for coming by today with Lucky. I want to let all my readers know that you and Lucky will be giving away copy of either A Night of Southern Comfort or His Southern Temptation to one lucky (heehee) commentor.

Cynthia – thanks for having me back! I am so excited to share my latest release, His Southern Temptation. In this story, Lucky Landon, knows what he wants—Taylor—and he pulls out all the stops to get her.

His Southern Temptation 900px_2After a certain scene where impromptu skinny dipping was indulged in, I asked Lucky to tell me the things he’d take the next he wanted to take Taylor on a midnight swim.

LUCKY: Hey ya’ll. Robin asked me to stop by and offer my ideas of how to put together the sexiest skinny dipping date in history. I dare you to keep your clothes on when your man has all this waiting for you:

1. A soft, warm blanket to lie down on. I’d bring two so we can sleep under stars until dawn. Nothing is better than sex under the stars…unless it is sex in morning as the dawn breaks over the mountains.
2. A bottle, or two, of chilled bottles of wine and/or beer. Taylor’s favorite wine is a good chardonnay and beer…well, as long as it’s wet, cold, and alcoholic any beer is good enough for me.
3. A cold supper of fried chicken, potato salad and couple slices of my Aunt Dolly’s chocolate peanut butter pie from the Southern Comfort Diner. Nothing says romance like chocolate.

Now, the one thing I wouldn’t take is any music. All you need to set the right mood is sound of the cicadas in the night.

ROBIN: So, those are the top things Lucky would take. Would you go? Anything you’d like to add?

EXCERPT

He relaxed his stance enough for her to brush his abdomen with the back of her hand. His T-shirt was warm, soft, and clinging to the hard muscle underneath. He stiffened at her touch, his jaw tightening into a firm edge, eyes narrowed to slits of darkest blue in the dim light. She could almost hear the voice in his head rehearsing the million reasons why he was going to tell her no.

Taylor took a half-step closer, now able to fully explore the breadth of his chest with both hands. Lucky’s breath hitched when her fingernail grazed his nipple and she almost took pity on him when his heartbeat kicked up another notch. She was faring no better, this proximity was making her hands shake and the heat gathering in her belly was consuming her. Leaning up on tiptoe, she traced the line of his neck with her lips—not quite kissing, but enough pressure to leave goose bumps in her wake.

“Stay with me.” Now, she tasted him, punctuating her request with a small bite just below his ear followed by a moist kiss to soothe the burn. He tasted so good—male, spicy and accented by the tang of sweat. Her mouth watered as she mindlessly made her way to his mouth, unable to resist having more of what she’d sampled earlier on the parlor floor.

His lips were supple and open for her. Warm, wet mouth, tongue like velvet as it tangled with hers. The arousal from their earlier encounter was only a banked fire, never fully extinguished and now it flared back to life, making her burn. Her knees gave out and Taylor bunched his shirt in one hand, the other one hooking into the waistband of his jeans to keep from sliding down to the ground. One touch of his hard body and she couldn’t resist exploring further, her fingers dipping down to trace the rigid length of his cock through the soft denim. He was hot, filling her palm with the weight of his desire.

The duffle bag hit the floor with a thud, freeing Lucky to weave his fingers in her hair, tugging gently to tilt her head at an angle to align their mouths better for a deeper, wetter kiss. This one was dark, filled with need and years of lust as he forcefully controlled the depth and pressure of the kiss—his passion taking it to the sharp edge of total possession. She whimpered, the sound echoing off the walls and matching the trembling in her body as she threw herself into this moment with the man who’d haunted her dreams for half her life.

An Interview with Julie Anne Lindsey

Please help me welcome Julie Anne Lindsey to my blog today. Julie Anne will be giving away a copy of her ebook to one lucky commentor, so be sure and leave a comment.

WrittenonherHeart_JL_sm_2Tell us about yourself. My name is Julie Anne Lindsey, I’m a stay at home mother of three children. Two boys and a girl. My boys are 9 and 7. My daughter is 4 and “stay at home” is a misnomer because I am never home. We have preschool three days a week and swim and ballet and the boys have commitments and we have social things. We live a very full, abundantly busy life.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be, and why? I live in rural Ohio where I was born and raised. I wouldn’t live anywhere else. I love it here. The crime rate is low and pace is slow. I don’t fight with traffic, though I often follow tractors home at 8 MPH. We’re removed from chaos, but close to a highway. I can get my share of Starbucks and Sephora in under twenty minutes.

How did you get started writing? I started writing after seeing Twilight on Pay PerView one bleary eyed night four years ago. I was up nursing my daughter and got sucked into the odd movie. When I learned they were books, I fell back into my passion of reading. Something I lost when baby one came around looking all cute and needing my attention. Then I saw the author in an interview. She was a mom like me. Not a writer. Just a woman with a story to tell. I called my husband and told him, “I’m going to write a novel.” Being the supportive, amazing man he is, he said…”What will it be about?” Never once did he doubt I could do it. He tells me often he thinks I can do anything. I think he’s right.

Tell us about your current series/WIP. In March, I had another sweet romance release from Turquoise Morning Press. The title is Written on Her Heart.
Emma’s falling in love with a man she’s never met, or has she?

Emma has her reasons not to fall in love, but fate has other plans. When she finds a journal near Honey Creek lake, she sneaks a peek at the words of a stranger, but finds the heart of a hero instead. Soon she’s savoring every word, opening her heart to the man inside and her mind to possibilities she gave up long ago.

Across town, Nicholas is devastated at the loss of his grandfather’s journal, one he’s written in since he left for Iraq a decade ago. The thought of a stranger mocking his words, or worse, someone from Honey Creek knowing his most intimate trials…. If his journal falls into the wrong hands, humiliation is sure to follow.
But what if it fell into the right ones?

What inspired your latest book? Written on Her Heart was inspired by the Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan movie, You’ve Got Mail. I’ve spent tons of time wondering what love would look like if we somehow met our true love without seeing them? Forget love at first sight. What happens when two souls happen upon one another and simply know / recognize their counterpart? The idea has lingered in my heart and mind for years. After watching Meg Ryan fall in love with Tom Hanks in You’ve Got Mail, I wanted to see more. Why weren’t there more stories like theirs out there for my reading pleasure? I couldn’t get enough. Finally, I decided to write the story of my heart, and here it is.

Where do you get the ideas for your stories? I spend most of my life wondering “What if?” I thank my parents for allowing me to be an only child. I’ve had plenty of time to hone my imagination and storytelling. I used to write little stories for my friends or pretend I had these elaborate dreams so I could use that as an excuse to tell a really convoluted story that was on my mind. I think of interesting things constantly. The hard part is figuring out which ideas a deep enough to become a real story with secondary arcs and a setting and all that jazz. Also, it’s sometimes hard for me to know if the idea is as interesting to someone else as it is to me. LOL

Are you a plotter or a pantser? I’m a reformed pantser and this is why: deadlines. I’ve learned that I can spend a day or two outlining 28 chapters with 8-10 bullet points to cover in each, and when it’s time to write, the words come. I already know what I’m writing that day. Writing a chapter a day by the guideline I already set, I can write a novel in 28 days. Now, I never have 28 days in a row to write, but still. You see. Outlining keeps me on track, on task and saves time. Time is my new best friend.

Has your muse always known what genre you would write and be published in? NO. Oh my. No. I still write in multiple genres and I realize I’m at a point where I need to pick a path and grow roots, but it’s so haaaaaard. *cries* I like telling whatever story pops into my head. Deciding on one path will kill me, but I’m working on it….*wahhhh*

Do you have any rejection stories to share? I’m a professional reject. I have been rejected hundreds of times. Literally. One agent’s assistant called me a pervert after reading my attempt at a paranormal romance. Turns out, that’s not my genre I guess. Another friend of mind was rejected for nine years. Wrote another story, sold it. Guess what? The pub who bought this story, is buying that other one. The one rejected for NINE years. Lesson: don’t delete it!! One day you may need it! LOL

Will you share some encouraging words for authors still struggling for that first contract? YES! Do. Not. Quit. Do. NOT. Ever. Ever. Ever. This is YOUR dream. No one can reach it for you. If you stop, the dream dies. You don’t want that on your conscience. It’s total cliché, but true: It only takes ONE yes. ONE. And everyone gets rejected! I get rejected so much it’s crazy. I get rejected by my own publishers. You can’t take it personally. It’s a business. Agents and editors take on what they know they can sell. Maybe your story hasn’t found that person yet. Maybe the market isn’t ready for you yet. Don’t give up. Put it aside. Write something new. Keep you mind fresh and keep improving your craft. You WILL get there. Consider this point where the herd is thinned and quitters quit but YOU bullet ahead and get the prize. Also: once you get that first contract, your publisher is going to ask you “What else do you have?” So hold onto your work. It will see publication one day.

What’s next for you? I’m looking forward to a summer of preparations. This fall my debut cozy mystery releases from Carina Press (digital imprint of Harlequin) and my YA suspense, Deceived, releases from Merit Press where I had the amazing privilege of working with and learning from Jackie Mitchard as my editor. Jackie’s book was the inaugural pick in Oprah’s book club. She’s flat out amazing. I have one more sweet romance coming in the Honey Creek Books line in November.

Where can readers find you? I attend every book event in Ohio. I’m always searching for things in and around my state where I can meet readers and connect with other authors. I’ll be at several amazing conferences and Killer Nashville too! I keep a calendar on my website with updates as I confirm and I’m online always. I live here.

EXCERPT

Written on Her Heart by Julie Anne Lindsey

When Mom pulled the door open, she nearly leapt into my arms. Tears already streamed from her eyes. It’d been two years since I’d been home, but not even secrets formed halfway around the world were safe from our small town. The moment I pulled my rental onto Route 22, I became fair game for gossip and ghost spotting. When a train lumbered along the only set of tracks and held me up for nearly five minutes, I watched a dozen bystanders take notice. First of the car they didn’t know, and then they dipped their heads for a look at the driver. The lady in front of me yanked her mirror to the side to check her face, and her chin dropped when our eyes met. By the time I lifted Mama into my arms, she’d received no less than four phone calls announcing my arrival. So much for surprises.

She looked smaller and more fragile than I remembered. Maybe after two years in a battle zone everything did. Her thin palms gripped my cheeks tight, and she kept saying, “Welcome home,” until my eyes filled to match hers. Tears streamed over the skin on her cheeks, and I never wanted to leave. The most important thing I could protect was right there in my hands.

Emma sniffled and wiped tears as she finished the passage for the third time. Her tears dropped onto the ink. She flung her body backward onto her bed and exhaled. The imagery astounded her. She knew firsthand how it was to arrive home. Every car in town must be inventoried somewhere. She shook her head, picturing the train. How awful to be held back by something as mundane as a train when you’re coming home from war to see your mother.

A gush of air filled her lungs, and she bolted upright.

“Oh my Lord in Heaven, he’s from Honey Creek!” She looked around for someone to dance with. Grabbing the journal in one hand, she skimmed the words again though she’d practically memorized them already. Route 22. One set of tracks. His journal sat under her willow. “Wheeeee!” She scooped a pillow off her bed and spun until the floor tilted.

He was from Honey Creek.

Sneak Peek Sunday – Heiress Bride #3

Welcome to my Sneak Peek Sunday. For today’s sneak peak we are staying with Heiress Bride. For my give away this week, I’m giving a copy of Capital Bride, the first in the Matchmaker and Co. series, in any format including paperback if you are in the US.

Heiress Bride, the second in the Matchmaker and Co. series is available now from Amazon and other retailers.

heiress_bridePicking up where we left off, Nathan and Ella have left Golden and are heading home. She’s finally removed her veil and let the sun shine on her face.

“Ahh,” she said. “That feels so wonderful.”

Nathan looked at her and smiled.

“What?” she asked.

“You seem so happy with just a little sunshine on your face. At this rate I’m going to have no trouble pleasing you.”

She laughed. “I am easily amused. After nearly a year without feeling the sunshine on my face for more than a moment, this is amazing.”

He pulled onto a driveway off the main road. Far up the road, in a little gully up against the foothills sat the ranch buildings. She could make out the two large buildings, one of which she assumed was the house and several smaller buildings.

An Interview with Robin Leigh Morgan

Please help me welcome Robin Leigh Morgan to my blog today. Robin will be giving a kindle or paperback (paperback is US only) copy of her book, I Kissed A Ghost, to one lucky commentor. In addition, rather than an excerpt of the book, Robin has given us a blog post on switching genres that I think you, my readers, will find interesting.

I_Kissed_a_Ghost0001_2Tell us about yourself.
I’m a retired NYC civil servant with various job titles, the last one of which was in the Systems Analyst title series. I’m been married for 19 years but we have no children; we have two cats. And if I could live anywhere in the world it would be Hawaii [US] or Bermuda.

How you tell us something about how and why you started writing and anything else connected to your writing you feel my readers would be interested in?
I actually began to write back in June 1995, where until June 2006 I wrote over 450 commentary type items for a community newspaper. Along the way I decided to see if I could write something else. I didn’t own a computer back then, but I did have access to one where I wrote my commentaries, and it was on this computer I wrote about two pages a week. Once I got my computer I began to write what I wanted to be a contemporary romance with a paranormal element running through, but I never seemed to get the sense it would be good enough to be read by someone else. Eventually, someone suggested I write for a younger audience, which how I came to write my first novel, a YA [Young Adult] Paranormal/Time Travel/First Kiss romance entitled, “I Kissed a Ghost.”

As you can see I didn’t really choose the genre I for my first and only book so far to write in, it just happened as I wrote it. When it comes to my actual story writing the ideas are merely ones of my own imagination [think of Gene Wilder singing “Pure Imagination” in his Willy Wonka movie.]

As far as my next book is concerned I’m going to return to writing the romance manuscript I had started many years ago, and approaching it anew with the knowledge I’ve gained along the way in writing “I Kissed a Ghost.” The reason I’m writing it is relatively simple, I’ve always felt somewhat incomplete not having completed something I once had started out to do, and I now want to fill the void it has created in my life.

What is your favorite/least favorite part of writing?
Without any hesitation my favorite part of writing is typing that elusive final period of my manuscript and actually being able to get my book into the hands of people who I hope will enjoy reading.

Now on the other hand my least favorite part is the on-going, almost constant, editing, and re-reads I needed to do.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?
My advice to all aspiring, not just those who wish to self-publish would be to Ever give up living your dream of becoming a writer, as you can from reading about me, I never did. Before you start looking for a publisher or even an agent you MUST have your manuscript edited, granted the editor you select might miss a few minor points, but at least it’s now in a much more presentable condition. Publishers want manuscript which can be easily edited by their own editing staff, without them having to correct countless misspellings and grammatical errors.

How did you come up with the title for your book?
Selecting a title for a book had been a very challenging experience for me; but after racking my brain over it, I decided to merely summarize the premise for the entire story in as few words as possible until I had something which could be used as the title for my book. Hence, since the story is about a girl [Mary] and her kissing the ghost [George] she had living in her house, the story had to be called, “I Kissed a Ghost.”

What did you do to promote your work?
I do what all authors do, whether they’re traditionally published or self-published. I use the same social media networks as everyone else. I tried to have reviews done by individuals who I feel will fair in what they have to say. And I do interviews so my potential readers will be able to learn more about me, my writing, and of course, my book.

All self-pubbed books are rumoured to be shoddily edited. What do you say to that?
The reason I feel that many self-published books this way simply because they’ve only been self-edited. Authors need their books to be edited by someone who knows all the rules of grammar and punctuation. And even though manuscripts have gone through this process, even traditionally published books might still have errors in them, although they’d be less frequently and more minor in what was wrong, such as a comma, instead of a semi-colon.

Do you write under a pen name? Why or why not? How did you choose it?
There’s no way I can deny I’m using a pen name, especially since my screen name on my website, three additional blogs, FaceBook, and Twitter is MyPenNameOnly.
I felt my real name is somewhat ethnic sounding, and I felt uncomfortable using it as an author, I wanted to have a relatively mundane name which had a nice sound to it when you would say it.

Do you or have you belonged to a writing organization? Which one? Have the helped you with your writing? How?
I belong to the R.W.A. [Romance Writers of America] and the S.C.B.W.I. [Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators] both under my real name. Both offer great information regarding being an author. However, I found SCBWI more helpful with some of the legal aspects connected with being an author. They also have discussion boards where you can interact with fellow authors regarding issues or questions you might have.

Why have you become a published author?
I first decided to write a novel primarily to see if I could actually do it. Now that I’m retired it gives me a lot to do; especially when you consider everything after you need to do once the book has been published. I’m currently it the process of writing the contemporary romance I’d started many years ago, a book which I never seem to be able to good enough to consider even self-publishing it. When I retired someone suggested I write for a younger audience, which is how I came to write “I Kissed a Ghost.” Hopefully being a published author will become my second career.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do to combat it?
There isn’t an author who hasn’t suffered a few bouts of it. When I wrote “I Kissed a Ghost” I used to stay away from writing anything for it. I wanted to clear my mind from having too many ideas to write at the same time. Now, having learned a lot from my first journey to becoming a YA romance author, I’ve decided to use a totally different tactic. I’m on a brief hiatus from writing my second romance novel, and during the past few weeks I’ve found writing Flash Fiction of five sentence, and around 33 words has helped those creative juices in the little grey cells of my head to really start flow. Some the Kindle version of my book is available I’m going to return to my writing.

CHANGING GENRES

RLM_image_2Some of us who have chosen to write fiction come from a variety of places. And by “a variety of places,” I’m not referring to a physical location; I’m referring to our writing experiences.

There are some of us who have enjoyed writing since we were children, and each year, by writing something in school, it improved. For some of us, it continued until we graduated college and began working. Some of us entered the work force taking jobs, which required us to write, whether it was procedures, handbooks/manuals, or news stories. But all of these are non-fiction, and each one has a set of “rules” that need to be followed to write something well enough to be acceptable.

As for myself, while my regular job did not require me to write, for eleven years I wrote articles [commentaries/viewpoints] of what was happening in my community and my feelings about it. When I started to write these items, my writing skills were not honed. I didn’t have my ideas organized in a tight manner, although my writing had been informative. By the time I’d written my last item, I’d become quite adept at it.

When I started to write fiction, I somehow drifted to writing a contemporary romance story with a paranormal element running through the storyline, but after almost 9 years I still hadn’t completed it. That is, until someone suggested I should write for a much younger audience, which is what I did, cumulating in my first YA Paranormal/Time Travel/First Kiss romance novel entitled I Kissed a Ghost.

Anyway, making the transition from non-fiction to fiction, I’ve had to learn a new set of rules on how to write. Most of these involved dialogue, showing not telling, where before I just told. I now had to learn about the use of tags. I had to learn not to be overly descriptive of something, but allow my reader to create the image for themselves in their minds. In the beginning I found it hard to break my old writing habits. Now I’m finding myself with these habits essentially gone. The biggest issue I still have and am trying to get a good handle on, is POV [Point of View]. Regardless of what’s happening or being said it has to be in one character’s perspective, and you can’t flip-flop between two characters within a scene. There needs to be a transition from one character to another.

All these things have helped me mold myself into the author I’m today. I’ve also learned there are additional rules within a genre, depending on the sub-genre you’ve decided to write in. These rules apply to the dialogue spoken, which needs to be true to the time period you’re writing in, as well as how your characters are dressed, and their titles, if any, as is the case with the regencies sub-genre of romance novels.

So as you can see, writing is not merely a string of words you put together. There are rules that need to be followed if you’re to be well received by your readers.

If you have any questions, I’d love to hear from you.
