The Research Rabbit Hole by Paty Jager

Every time I start a book, I research. I’m looking for information about the area where I’m setting the book, events during the time of the book, and about occupations of the characters in the book.  And every time, I end up with way more information than I need and find something so interesting I start thinking up scenarios for other books. It seems to be a curse. 😉

Not really, I enjoy learning and exploring. I think that is one of the reasons writing makes me so happy. I get to research so many fascinating things.

Brody CoverFor my latest book, Brody: Letters of Fate, the setting is a ghost town I discovered while doing historical research on the area we moved to permanently two years ago.  Locals kept telling us about a cave that was big and I mean huge, that had a mile long lake in it. I dug up the information on the cave and have visited it half a dozen times, taking visitors to see it. This was something I had to put in the book. The other thing I discovered was a town or community that had the stage coming to it until the railroad bypassed the town, leaving it to dwindle away to a sign and a house.  The town is Venator, Oregon. A gentleman by the name of Alphena Venator started a cattle ranch in 1884 in SE Oregon. Family homes were clustered together and before long everyone called the area Venator. A post office was established in 1895 with Louella Venator as the first postmaster. There wasn’t a whole lot more than this that I could find out about the town other than the stage coach arrived daily. But I liked the way it grew and used it as the stage stop and town closest to my make-believe ranch.

Other unique and interesting things I discovered to write this book dealt with how hay was put up in the late 1800’s.  I watched videos using horse drawn equipment to harvest the hay. From the websites I browsed, I discovered there were several different horse drawn mowers. The first one having been made in England around 1845. The horse drawn hay mower took hold in the U.S. in the 1860’s after the Civil War when manufacturing took off. As one would figure some of the first and best models were made by John Deere, Jerome Case, and Cyrus McCormick, well-known names even today in farm equipment. The amount of strength it took to pull levers and lift parts of the early-day machines is eye opening.

Having researched the equipment and the discipline it took to stay with the project until a crop was harvested and stored, horse drawn mowerI’m even more excited about an idea I have for a book that I’ve been kicking around for several years. It will be set in wheat country with a family of girls running the wheat ranch.

Right now you can pre-order Brody: Letters of Fate at a reduced price of $2.99. When the book publishes on July 16th, the price will be $4.99.

Brody: Letters of Fate

A letter from a grandfather he’s never met has Brody Yates escorted across the country to work on a ranch rather than entering prison. But his arrival in Oregon proves prison may have been the lesser of two evils. A revenge driven criminal, the high desert, and his grandfather’s beautiful ward may prove more dangerous than anything he’d faced on the New York docks.

Lilah Wells is committed to helping others: the judge who’d taken her in years ago, the neighboring children, and the ranch residents, which now includes the judge’s handsome wayward grandson. And it all gets more complicated when her heart starts ruling her actions.

Historical western filled with steamy romance and the rawness of a growing country.

A visit with Cindy Nord

Have you always had a passion for writing?

My passion for writing began many years ago.  As a young divorcee completely disillusioned by romance, I sought enjoyment in reading. Then, finally, on a lonely New Year’s Eve, I tucked my two young son’s into bed, poured myself a glass of wine, then pulled out my old Tower typewriter. With a strong belief in a ‘happily-ever-after’ I began to craft a love story which would contain all the elements I felt a true hero should possess. THAT was the night I gave birth to a Civil War love story, NO GREATER GLORY, which ultimately became a Romance Writers of America Golden Heart finalist, which landed me my fabulous agent. Lo and behold, my journey toward publication began.

Does what you read influence what you write and what are some of your favorite authors/books?

I love historical romance.  The elements I look for in a novel that I read for pleasure are a captivating love story, characters who I can fall in love with, and detailing that sweeps me right straight back into the time period.  I have many romance novels on my keeper shelf, but as I glance at them several stand out to me, and are as timely & moving as they were when I first them:  THE OUTSIDER by Penelope Williamson.  GONE WITH THE WIND by Margaret Mitchell.  LOVE & WAR by Patricia Hagan. Good heavens, the list goes on and on.

What are your biggest inspirations?

PEOPLE…So many wonderful people motivate me to do better, strive harder, and reach farther.  Their successes are what inspires me to continue in my quest every single day. And HISTORY…I truly enjoy the research side of writing in my chosen genre.

Do you have a technique in how you choose characters and/or locational settings?

Some of my characters have been born in my mind before I even start writing a book.  And others only after I’m in the process of creating.  They literally ‘talk to me’…lol. For example, Dillon [the hero of my third novel & sidekick of Jackson Neale] just would not take a back seat in my second novel [With Open Arms…the love story of Callie Cutteridge and Jackson Neale] until I promised him he could have his own dang book!! And I always place my characters in settings that I love myself.

Do you listen to music while you are creating your masterpieces?

Absolutely…especially when crafting a love scene or writing involved conflict. And my music choices vary so greatly from Enya to Garth Brooks to The Eagles to Beethoven.  See? I’m a writer, so my mood changes with the wind.

What do you do to stay motivated and avoid writer’s block?

I always run things past my husband and we’ll sit down & discuss upcoming scenes and potential plot twists.  Oh, and bottles of wine….lots and lots of organic Pinot Noir…lol.

How has becoming a published author changed your perspective on life and is it everything you expected it to be?

I didn’t realize how extremely busy my life would become upon being published.  I find myself with less time to actually write, so I must be even more focused than ever before and follow guidelines that I have set for myself.  I love the opportunities and ‘opened doors’ that being a historical romance writer has presented to me. From interacting with so many amazingly wonderful authors that I have admired for years, to meeting incredibly supportive bloggers, readers, and leaders in the publishing industry, I cannot ask for a better ‘career’ than this one.

What are your biggest challenges as an author?

Balancing my time and attention between writing, social media, my family and my friends…and, of course, finding just that perfect word to use in a sentence…after all, it’s all about the emotions.

Do you have any pets?

Two spoiled-rotten Shetland Sheepdogs….Shelties, of course.  Our oldest boy’s AKC name is Charleston’s Own Captain Rhett Butler Nord, but we just call him Buddy.  And our little girl is Atlanta’s Own Katy Scarlett O’Hara Nord, otherwise affectionately called Katy.

What hobbies do you have outside of reading and writing?

Gardening. RV camping and traveling. Hiking. Bicycling. And going on luxurious cruises with the hubster.

Where is the most exciting/memorable place you have been in the world?

Too numerous to pick just one…from the Mayan Ruins deep in Mexico’s core to the beauty and splendor of the Grand Canyon to the hauntingly poignant monuments of the bloodstained Civil War battlefields across this nation, each and every place has burned a spot inside our heart.

Tell us about your latest work in progress or most recent published work…

A visit with Leslie Langtry

Thank you, Cindy, for hosting me today!

My name is Leslie Langtry and I write 3 different mystery series, including The Aloha Lagoon Mysteries, The Merry Wrath Mysteries, and The Greatest Hits Mysteries.

UkuleleMurderTell us about your current series.

I’m very excited about the new Aloha Lagoon Mysteries. My first book in the series, UKULELE MURDER, came out on July 6. It’s the first in a continuity series – all taking place in the fictional Aloha Lagoon, Kauai, Hawaii. There are several authors writing their own series within the Aloha Lagoon series – and our characters will interact throughout the books, which is pretty interesting. It’s a bit tricky to manage, but I think fans will love it. At least, I hope they do.  There’s a website where you can check out the whole series including characters and locations: www.alohalagoonmysteries.com

My series features Nani Johnson – a Julliard Trained musician and ukulele virtuoso who moves from Kansas to Kauai with her crazy mother in tow. Nani wants to perform professionally, but when she arrives in Aloha Lagoon, she finds there are already 3 ukulele artists who get all the good gigs. So, Nani is reduced to playing at the Blue Hawaii Wedding Chapel (complete with Elvis impersonating minister) and various gigs when she can get them. Unfortunately, one of the other ukulele musicians turns up dead and Nani is the main suspect.

What inspired your latest book?

I jumped at the chance to be part of this series because I’m a huge fan of the ukulele. I’m a hobbyist – I do play – but I’m nowhere near as good as my main character. This book was so much fun to write – mostly because I got to pretend to be a virtuoso. I’d love to have Nani in future books meet some of my favorite artists like Jake Shimabukuro or Victoria Vox or the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. But what I’d really love is for me to actually meet these people. In person. Where I can embarrass myself by becoming a squealing fan girl begging for autographs. Of course, now that I say that, it seems like a bad idea…

What is your next project and when will it be released?

I’m working on the 2nd book now – UKULELE DEADLY – which will come out in March. I do have a new release for my Merry Wrath Mysteries – MOVIE NIGHT MURDER coming out in September.

Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

It’s really hard to say. I wish I had a lock on that. I kind of stumble upon them reading the newspaper, when doing the dishes or even just before I fall asleep. I learned a long time ago to keep a notepad by the bed, just in case. I’ve lost a lot of ideas by thinking I’d remember them when I wake up.

Give us an elevator pitch for your book.

UKULELE MURDER is like MURDER SHE WROTE, but funny. Also like MAGNUM P.I., but with a ukulele as the main prop, instead of a mustache.

Tell us about your heroine.  Give us one of her strengths and one of her weaknesses.

Nani Johnson is in her twenties and single, living in Aloha Lagoon, Kauai. She grew up on a farm in Kansas and studied classical guitar at Julliard before falling in love with the diminutive ukulele. When her father dies, she takes her Hawaii-obsessed mother and moves to the islands. She has a dream to be a real artist, that is rudely interrupted by reality when she finds a lot of competition for a few gigs. Meanwhile her mother has dyed her hair black and calls herself Haliaka, driving the mahjong set crazy with her belief she’s the descendant of Hawaiian royalty.

Nani’s strength is that she can keep it together when things go wrong – like when her mother decorates the living room with dozens of coconuts in grass skirts, or when she’s the main suspect when her competition starts dying off.

Her weakness is her struggle to fit in. Things are a lot different in Kauai than they were in Kansas. Nani tries to figure out how to blend in – but it doesn’t always work out the way she wants it to.

Describe the genre of this particular title, and is the only genre you write in?

UKULELE MURDER is a comic cozy mystery. As a reader, I’m a huge fan of the genre. My Merry Wrath Mysteries are the same, featuring outed CIA agent Merry Wrath, who goes home to small town Iowa and leads a Girl Scout troop. My Greatest Hits Series is more mystery/comedy/romance/adventure about a family of assassins – so it’s a little different. I really like writing cozies though, and I imagine I will always write them

EXCERPT:

CHAPTER ONE

If anyone requests “Ukulele Lady,” I’m out of here. I’m not going to do it. Not again. Not for the millionth time. Is that the only song tourists know? Yeesh. Please, tiki god of the Ukulele, don’t let me kill a tourist today.

“‘Ukulele Lady!'” a dumpy, middle-aged man in a Frankie Goes to Hollywood T-shirt screams. He gives me a knowing nod with his balding head to indicate he’s the only one in the room who knows true Hawaiian culture.

I hate him. I imagine bludgeoning him with my koa wood uke.

But I don’t. Do you know how hard it is to get blood out of koa wood? Well…I don’t know either, but I’d guess it isn’t easy.

Instead, I play the damn song—smiling as I imagine shoving his pineapple drink up his…

The crowd cheers as I perform. I know—it’s not so bad having an adoring audience. But this isn’t the audience I want. This is Judah Horowitz’s bar mitzvah. One of the few gigs I could get in Aloha Lagoon.

My name is Hoalohanani Johnson. My mother, Harriet Jones Johnson, is a bit of a Hawaiian-obsessed nut. It’s so bad that it’s to the point where she believes she is the reincarnation of a Hawaiian princess and says that my name came from a dream from an ancestor god. In reality, it probably came from the bottom of a rum bottle.

To her endless annoyance, my redheaded, green-eyed mom comes from a long line of English ancestors and grew up in Kansas. Dad was a third-generation blond, brown-eyed German whose name was shortened to Johnson due to the inability to pronounce whatever the name really was. Neither of my parents had ever been to Hawaii until Mom and I moved here after Dad died.

I go by Nani. And I now live in Aloha Lagoon on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, with my mother, who now calls herself Haliaka and dyes her hair and eyebrows a ridiculous shade of black that does not look natural. I’ve never understood where my dark-brown hair comes from, but I look more native than she does. Always dressed in a muumuu, Mom wears hibiscus flowers in her hair and hangs out on my lanai, singing island songs all day and night, much to my neighbors’ dismay. Sigh.

I finish my set, tell the crowd “aloha,” and am cut off by the DJ who decides suddenly to play a gangsta rap song.

“Thank you!” Gladys Horowitz of Trenton, New Jersey, and Judah’s mother, slips an envelope into my hands before running to the dance floor to shimmy disturbingly. Thirteen-year-old Judah hangs his head in shame.

I make my way through the crowd to the bar and order a decidedly un-Hawaiian vodka tonic.

“Here’s the ten bucks I owe you.” The bartender smiles, handing me money.

I gulp my drink, slapping an empty glass on the bar. “I told you, someone requests it every time.” I take his money and head to my car. My shift in hell is over.

SOPHIA, The Brides of San Francisco, Book 4 by Cynthia Woolf

Here is an excerpt from SOPHIA, The Brides of San Francisco, Book 4.

sophiaRobert Langley stood in the lobby, waiting for Miss Sophia Hayes, the woman who would be his bride and the mother to his four children. And they definitely needed a mother. From the stories his own mother told him, his wife Marybeth hadn’t cared much for the children since baby Harry was borne. Robert Jr., tried to take care of the younger children—Rachel, Sara and Harry. Rachel wouldn’t have any of it and was likely to be the toughest on a new mother because she’d taken to mothering Sara and Harry. He wasn’t sure how easy it would be to wrest that responsibility from her. He hoped Miss Hayes was up to the task.

Movement on the staircase caught his attention and Robert looked up as a woman appeared. She was a vision in purple. A lovelier sight he hadn’t seen in a long time. She had raven black hair, pale skin and was curvaceous. He loved women who looked like women.

The woman started toward him. A child of about three was running in the lobby laughing at his parents trying to catch him. He tripped and fell in front of the woman. He started crying. She picked up the child, soothed him, brushing his tears away. His mother stopped and reached for the child. The woman in purple smiled and talked to him for a moment before letting him go. Then she began walking again…toward Robert.

No, she couldn’t be. He couldn’t be that lucky, could he?

“Mr. Langley?”

“Yes, I’m Robert Langley,” he told the vision with the voice of an angel.

“I’m Sophia Hayes,”

“I’m pleased to meet you Miss Hayes. My carriage is waiting if you’re ready to go to dinner.”

“Certainly.”

He held out his arm to escort her to his carriage.

She daintily placed her hand in the crook of his elbow.

He put his hand on top of hers, wishing she were not wearing gloves and that he could feel her skin, soft and warm against his bare hand.

“You look quite charming, Miss Hayes.”

“Thank you. That’s kind of you to say.”

“There is nothing kind about the truth.”

She blushed prettily.

He hadn’t thought she could get any more beautiful, but when she blushed the color was not just in her face but her neck and chest, too. He wondered if she blushed all over and what he wouldn’t give to find out.

“I’ve a favorite restaurant to take you to. It’s called Cliff House and it sits above the city on a cliff. Obvious name, but wonderful cuisine. The ride is about thirty minutes, so we’ll have a chance to get to know each other a little.”

“That sounds delightful.”

He helped her into the carriage and as much as he wanted to sit by her and perhaps kiss her, he took the seat across from her. He would restrain himself until after they were married. Soon. They would be married soon.

A Visit with Marie Higgins

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00070]How did you get started writing?

When I was in junior high, I wrote my first story for an English assignment. It was entered in a contest and I won second place. When I was in high school, I wrote skits for my community, and I had so much fun doing that, I continued even after I was married. These skits were performed and judged, and I won awards like Funniest and Best Written. It wasn’t until after reading my very first romance novel, A Rose in Winter, by Kathleen E Woodiwiss, when I fell in love with romance novels. For the next few years, I devoured them—mainly historical. It wasn’t until I had watched a romance movie that didn’t have a happy ending, when I decided to try to write my own happily-ever-after. Although the first book sucked, at least it had awakened my muse…and my muse hasn’t stopped talking to me, yet—even after 37 published stories.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I love to write historicals, but…I write whatever my muse tells me to write. I’ve written Colonial, Regency, Victorian, American Western, Titanic era (1912), Roaring Twenties (1920), romantic comedy, mystery/suspense, time-travel, paranormal, and last but certainly not least – fairy tales/fantasy! All of my stories have a little suspense or mystery to them, and all of them have a touch of humor, most of them have twists and turns, and of course, they are all romances with happy endings. The reason I write a lot of genres is because I strive to make all readers happy.

Tell us about your current series.

I’ll be working on two different series in 2016. I started out with my fairy tale series, “Where Dreams Come True”, and a month or so ago, I decided to take a break from that and add a few more books to my Regency series, “Sons of Worthington”. But the first part of June, I was slapped with another story idea—a murder mystery with a touch of humor, and a bunch of romance. That will also be in a series titled, “Your Every Day Heroes”.

The series I’m going to talk about today is my fairy tale series. Although we have read several fairy tale versions over the years, I’ve always wondered what if. (Must be the writer in me…) When I started book one of this series, I imagined what it would be like to be literally sucked into a book. Well, that’s exactly what my young adult characters experienced in “The Witch Hunt”. Book two, “Champion”, is about Robin Hood who is whisked from history to our time because a woman made a wish for a fairy tale hero. Book three, “Her Own Fairy Godmother” is a modern-day Cinderella story / romantic comedy. My heroine tries to follow an internet article’s steps on how to catch a man…and she ultimately fails. Or does she? Book four, “Keep on Believing” is my historical Cinderella story. What if Cinderella didn’t stick around to allow her stepmother to turn her into a slave, and she decided to take control of her own life? This story still has her hero, and somewhat of a fairy godmother…  Book five, “Once Enchanted” is about Rapunzel, but instead of being thrown into a tower, she is placed under a spell, and she throws the hero in the tower. Can true love’s kiss break the spell?

So far, these are the only fairy tale stories that have been published, but many more are waiting their turn this year!

What inspired your latest fairy tale book?

By the time I started writing “Once Enchanted”, I knew I wanted a different twist for my story. I knew these things: 1) There needed to be a tower. 2) The heroine must have long hair. 3) There needed to be some kind of curse. 4) The Rapunzel flower was important to the story. Then I started thinking of different twists in the story. One idea led to another, which led to another, which started me on the road to writing, “Once Enchanted”.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

Because I had been so busy with my fairy tale series, and adding a few more books to my Regency series, I was surprised when I was hit with a new story idea. I was watching a crime show on tv, and one of the characters said, “Prince Charming is a Liar.” Of course, I laughed, and within seconds, the story idea popped into my head. A few hours later, my characters forced me up out of the La-Z-Boy recliner, and into the computer room. I haven’t stopped typing since. This book will be finished and released by the end of June! AND…a second book will come from this story, as well. It’ll be titled “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Altar”. I love it when story ideas push me to get them written.

What is your favorite part of writing?

I love writing twists and turns. I love it when my characters flow the way I imagined they would, but then all of a sudden, they take me in a different direction and surprise me.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

Self-publishing has given me the freedom I haven’t received with the other publishers I’ve been with over the years. I get to keep my own story lines. I get to choose my own book covers. I get to pick my own release date, plus I get to choose my own book price. What could be better than that?

Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

Most of my story ideas have come from my dreams. When I dream, it’s like I’m watching a movie. There is always a heroine, a hero, and sometimes a bad guy. Thankfully, I remember my dreams when I’m awake. I don’t dream the whole story, only a scene, but from that one scene, I can write the story anyway I want…usually. My characters like to guide me a lot.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

If you’re a brand new author, please study the genre of books that you write to see how the authors have written their books.  A lot of times you think your story will be a romance, but it might fit better with the Young Adult genre. Self-publishing isn’t easy, and as every author knows, we have to promote a lot. If you don’t have time for promoting, your story won’t get seen by others. But don’t give up. If writing is what you love, then DO IT!

Excerpt for “Once Enchanted”:

One of the girls in the children’s hospital ward giggled. “They named the girl after the flower?”

Clarissa shook her head. “No, but this was what the witch called her, because the little girl reminded the witch of the lovely Rapunzel flower.”

The children nodded and the little boy asked, “Then what happened?”

“Just as the little girl lowered the rope out the window for the witch to climb,” Clarissa continued, “the man jumped out from his hiding spot and knocked the witch unconscious. He then climbed the rope and rescued his daughter.”

The children clapped and cheered, but Clarissa motioned her hand to calm them. “The story isn’t over yet.”

“It’s not?” one asked.

“No. You see, just as the man had left the tower with his daughter, the witch became alert and attacked the man. She hit him with a large stick. Thankfully, the king was strong, so he fought her, and of course, he eventually killed the witch.”

The children stood and cheered. Clarissa laughed. She loved their reaction. They always responded this way with her stories. Perhaps that was why she loved coming to the children’s ward so much. Their infectious laugh was the best kind of medicine.

“Princess?” one of the children asked. “What was the witch’s name?”

Clarissa shook her head. “I’ll have to save that question for another time. Perhaps we can make a game of it.”

Once again, the children shouted with excitement. Clarissa looked at Ryder. His smile stretched from ear to ear as he applauded. Her heart warmed to see the enjoyment etched in his expression. Just as she remembered, his eyes gleamed with happiness. She realized how hard it was to look at anything else when he was in the room. He was such a handsome man—one she would love to get to know a little better now that they were grown.

As many times as she’d told that story over the years, she thought her memories would bring back the fear she once had of strangers. But the fear was no longer with her. Perhaps she hadn’t recalled how it had really happened word for word, but she’d only been six years old when the witch had kidnapped her, so she didn’t remember a lot. Had these reoccurring dreams opened up her memory in some way?

Her father hated this story, and scolded her for telling it to the children. But she was happy to know he loved her enough to rescue her and destroy the witch, which of course was the moral of the story, anyway.

Of course, she couldn’t help but sigh knowing her father loved her mother so much that he risked his life by climbing the rock wall to get her the Rapunzel flower.

She leaned back in her chair. Perhaps that was the very reason she hadn’t found a man she’d consider marrying. She wanted a love like her parents had. She wanted a man who would risk his life to prove his love.

A visit with Randi Cooley Wilson

Hi, thanks so much for having me today!

Vernal FOR WEBWhat genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write within the paranormal, urban fantasy, and contemporary romance genres. Paranormal romance is one of my favorites to both read and write in because it allows me to explore the unknown, and make the impossible, possible. I love world building and taking readers on a journey that is magical and spellbinding.

Tell us about your current series.

The Royal Protector Academy Trilogy is a spin-off of my best selling Revelation Series. It follows Serena St. Michael and Tristan Gallagher on their journey of epic love and follow’s their story as they struggle to try find their own place and step out of their parent’s shadows.

What inspired your latest book?

Vernal is the first book within the trilogy to release and really, the readers inspired this book series. I was receiving a lot of requests to continue with The Revelation Series and after five books, I just felt like that part of the story had ended the way it was meant to. RPA evolved from the readers asking for more and allowed me to write something new and fresh.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

I’m currently working on the Dark Soul Series, which is about an ancient demon legend. It follows Prince Stolas (the Prince of Hell), a.k.a. Stone and Hope (an oracle). It’s a demon-focused paranormal romance trilogy so we tend to refer to it as the Demon’s Den. It will be releasing late Fall 2016/Early Winter.

What is your typical day like?

I don’t have one (laughs). Without doubt, it always starts with coffee and ends with a glass of wine!

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

Wow, this is tough. My advice is to write what you’d love to read. If you love it, then that will show in your words and story. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s worth taking.

What is your favorite dessert/food?

My favorite food is nachos. Is that a food? I guess it’s technically an appetizer, but if done correctly, can be a well-balanced meal.

What genres are you drawn to as a reader?Vernal-promos-1

I love anything that is contemporary romance and/or paranormal romance.

Do you prefer to read in the same genres you write in or do you avoid reading that genre? Why?

I try not to read in the same genre I write in. It’s a conscience decision so that I don’t ever accidentally pick-up a storyline or plot point. When I write paranormal, I’ll only read contemporary and vice versa. I think it also helps keep my head clear to explore my world building and by avoiding my writing genre, it doesn’t muddy the brain waves.

Thanks so much for having me today!

PROLOGUE

 SERENA

With the spring come new beginnings.

Twenty years ago, amid the serenity of a winter snowfall, I was born into the London clan—a royal family of gargoyle protectors that for centuries has devotedly safeguarded mankind against evil.

There are many who would say it is a great honor and privilege to be Serena Elizabeth Vivian St. Michael, daughter of Abigail and Callan, princess and sole heir to the crown of the revered gargoyle protector race. My clan has fought darkness, overcome betrayals, restored balance, prevented a war, and solidified an honored place among the supernatural and divine worlds—all because the London clan of gargoyles carries a highly sought-after protector lineage: the dragon spirit.

Before my birth, my uncle, Asher St. Michael, the king of our race, was assigned to protect a human named Eve Collins. She was created as a divine secret. The only one of her kind, Eve was born of a non-fallen angel and human. To ensure her safety, the archangel Michael, her father, promised the Angelic Council that her continued existence would guarantee Heaven’s gates were safe from Hell’s dark army.

As a precaution, Michael designed the divination of redemption, preordaining the souls of the daughter of light and prince of dark to join together; their sacrifice—love. In the end, their love conquered all, preventing another war between Heaven and Hell, and solidifying the connection between the dragon and the divine spirit for centuries to come, thus guaranteeing our race’s existence.

As romantic as my aunt and uncle’s tale may seem, growing up in the shadow of their epic fairy tale was never easy, and as the only child produced from any of the London clan’s three couples, I have been bestowed the great honor of being next in line to the throne—an obligation I’m not interested in fulfilling. Alas, my oaths of duty, honor, and protection bind me to heed my vocation. As a protector, free will doesn’t exist. Our lives are not our own. We were created only to protect.

My world is not filled with happily ever after. It’s full of realism, treachery, and falsehoods.

The expectations that come with being a gargoyle born into the royal St. Michael family, and the London clan, are a heavy burden to carry. Those expectations chain me to vows, which are impossible to ignore.

But I am not them.

Their legend is not my ending.

This is my story. My beginning.

I am the next chapter of the London clan protector legacy.

My future was etched in stone until the day Tristan Gallagher swooped in, with his dark past and guarded secrets. The moment we met, I fell under his spell. It was a fatal mistake forcing us to choose between our hearts and bloodlines, trying to pull us apart with oaths and obligations.

Our love will ignite an ancient war.

Our pasts will collide with the present.

And one lie will destroy it all.

Welcome to the Royal Protector Academy.

Brief Story Synopsis: Vernal, A Royal Protector Academy Novel by Randi Cooley Wilson

Serena has a bright future etched in stone.

Tristan has a dark past that haunts him.

Together, they have a love that can never be.

Sheltered, and unable to escape her bloodline, Serena St. Michael has spent the last two years training at the Royal Protector Academy. Struggling with a dark past, Tristan Gallagher’s current assignment is to protect a lifetime of secrets. One chance encounter will change everything. Serena must decide if she will follow her heart, forsaking all she’s ever known and risking a future worse than non-existence. Tristan will break every rule to save Serena, even if he can’t keep her. In their world of darkness, one love will ignite an ancient war. When pasts collide with the present, and secrets are revealed, will love be enough? Or will one lie destroy it all?

When you’ve hidden behind a mask for so long, would you reveal yourself for love? Vernal, the first novel in The Royal Protector Academy series is a dangerously exciting and darkly romantic tale that will take your breath away.

The novelization of archaeology by Min Edwards

Hey, all. I’m Pam Headrick and I wear many hats… sometimes simultaneously. I also change my name at will. Today I’m speaking to you as Min Edwards, Romance and Adventure author. But in a past life, I was an archaeologist. I even have credentials: an MA from The University of Texas at Austin (and yes, The University of Texas is the correct way to refer to UT).

I worked several decades in my profession, doing a bit of field work but early on my professors and other archaeologists discovered my talent for illustration. In all those years affiliated with The University of Texas at Austin as a technical illustrator as well as a staff archaeologist at the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory, I probably drew more than 2000 points and tools, shells, site plans, maps and stratigraphic images. Unlike most other archaeologists working from contract to contract, I was continuously employed, i.e. I actually made a living wage.

It was a good life for a single mother. The lab let me work on my own schedule, half a day at the facility, half a day in the office at my house. Full benefits, and if any of you have been employed by a university, you’ll know how good those benefits can be. I didn’t know it then, but now I realize what a great job I had. I could indulge in ‘what if’ thoughts about the past even as I was bent over my drafting table sketching a never-ending collection of archaeological wonders. But time marches on and eyes grow dim. Now I couldn’t draw a hundred foot tall tree much less a tiny ‘bird’ point less than an inch long.

Nevertheless, my time post-archaeology, has been fun, too. I was a bookstore owner, then a formatter when Amazon and other venues made it easy for indie-authors to self-publish. Then, of course, obviously one day I thought… “I can do this, too. I can write a novel.” So I did. Three years ago, I started publishing my own stories.

My debut novel, STONE BAY, was a bit auto-biographical: A Texas woman, bookstore owner, archaeological illustrator, moves to Maine to start her life anew. Yep, that was me writing as Min Edwards. However, after this first novel, I changed pace for a couple of years, writing a Romantic Suspense series: High Tide Suspense. I have three novels published in that series and a fourth in final edits. The threads that bind them together are a group of close friends living most of their lives in the small Downeast village of Stone Bay on the shores of the Bay of Fundy.

I’ve loved writing these: STONE COLD, STONE HEART, STONE FALL, and the newest, PRECIOUS STONE coming in the summer of 2016. But of them all, STONE BAY’s theme trends closest to archaeology. I’ll give you an excerpt in a moment.

But throughout my reading (am I’ve been an avid reader since I was six and won a prize in First Grade for the most books read in a year) and writing life, I’ve been searching for novels about finding the past, depicting archaeology accurately in a fictional story. When I read Jean Auel’s CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR, I felt like I’d found my passion anew. This is what I’d been looking for. An author who was unafraid, whose imagination put life into those stone tools I had been drawing for years.

Since then, I’ve solidified what I want to see in novelizing archaeology.

  • I want an author to understand the past, the cultures that are only present as small chips of stone, beams of hand-hewn wood buried under thousands of years of peat deposits or volcanic ash, long sunk ancient ships spilling hundreds of wine amphora from their cargo holds.
  • I want an author who searches out new theories, and they’re being championed at an increasingly fast rate. Theories of the migration of ancient people into the Americas, Australia, and Europe, theories of the truth of ancient legends. New dates for the onset of agriculture, ornamentation (cave painting, stone carving), writing and domestication of animals.
  • I want to see current technology at work, new methods of doing archaeology. Every month in the pages of Archaeology Magazine (the publication of the American Institute of Archaeology), you can read of fabulous finds, incredible technology, as well as tremendous destruction done to the remains of past cultures all over the world. That’s my first stop on researching a new story.
  • I don’t want a sermon in the novel on protecting our past. What I do want is instruction as to why it’s necessary, and how archaeologists ensure that our pasts are
  • I want a good story, engaging characters who work in often terrible conditions, face danger from man and beast, manage to protect the artifacts, and still have time to have a life and love around a campfire or in a tent. There’s a lot of that going on in real life, believe me.
  • What I don’t want is another Indiana Jones because that’s not what archaeologists today are… well most aren’t. The profession is exciting without stooping to whips and fedoras.

This all said, I’ve decided to join with a friend, L.W. Ellis and co-author a series of our own archaeological novels… the TARE: Talon Archaeological Research and Exploration series. Our first novel will be coming out in August, if all the stars align. THE RUBY EYE. The location is a very large body of water in northern Luzon, the Philippines: Lingayen Gulf. The plot involves finding a 300 year old British East India ship sunk in a storm. There are pirates, sharks, big snakes and recalcitrant governments… as well as the depiction of a contemporary Filipino village and its people, the most generous folks on earth. I know. I’ve stayed in several of these villages while living on Luzon. My only caveat: don’t pitch your tent under a coconut palm; those falling nuts can be lethal!

If you’re interested in archaeology, here’s a list of a few authors I have found sticking pretty close to the technology and theories of archaeology as it’s practiced today. There are more good novelists out there, but these are the ones I particularly enjoy:

  • David Gibbins (an English archaeologist and novelists with eight novels in the Jack Howard series beginning with Atlantis)
  • Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear (People of the Earth series)
  • Kirk Mitchell (southwestern archaeology)
  • Tony Hillerman and his daughter Anne (Mr. Hillerman has passed away, but his daughter took up his pen and is writing her own novels. They aren’t about archaeology so much as they’re mysteries with their main characters being Navaho Tribal police officers… an interesting subject in itself.)

Some good archaeology websites:

And here’s an excerpt from my first novel, STONE BAY. Some archaeology, some history, some technology, but mostly rehab of a house similar to mine — an 1830s Greek Revival farmhouse on the coast of Maine — and falling in love (which unfortunately hasn’t happened to me yet).

In this portion of the story, the heroine, Amanda, and her builder and love interest, Kevin, are in a cave previously hidden behind a rock wall in her cellar. A cave that holds a link to the War of 1812.

STONE BAY

StoneBay_3x4_2015

Kevin squatted beside the rock mound on the floor of the cave and carefully started to lift off the bigger stones. Underneath the top layer, he found cloth, a jacket it looked like. Then more bones, then a skull showing a large hole in the temple—probably the cause of death. Here he stopped. “Why don’t you men wait outside until Ms. Warner gets here? She should be in on this discovery since it’s on her property. Greg, could you go get her? I think she’s in the kitchen with Liz.”

A minute later Amanda rushed into the cave and stood over Kevin, who still crouched by the body—bones actually—and cloth. It had obviously been there a long time.

“Kevin, oh, how awful. What do you suppose killed him and when?” Amanda couldn’t look away. A phrase suddenly popped into her mind, I don’t want to die in the dark. She jumped back, startled, and looked around, but there was only Kevin kneeling by the body and Greg and the guys looking into the cave from the opening.

Kevin stood and seemed to lose his balance for a moment. He looked down at his feet as if he’d stumbled on a rock, but it wasn’t a rock under his boot, it was something wrapped in an old piece of oilcloth.

“Amanda, would you run upstairs and get your camera,” he murmured to her.

“Oh, yeah, a camera. Good idea. And put your measuring tape next to the bundle while I’m gone, please. You know, for scale.” She turned and rushed out of the cave.

When she came back only moments later, she hurried to his side, knelt and began taking a series of images from all angles.

“Okay, I’m done,” she said as she nodded to him. “You can pick it up now, but be careful. Try not to disturb the ground around it or any more of the rocks near the bones.”

Kevin carefully got down on his knees and picked the bundle up out of the rubble, gently dusting it off.

“What is it?” Amanda asked, touching his arm.

He slowly opened the cloth covering as Amanda snapped more pictures and there lay a small leather book.

“Oh my God,” she exclaimed. “Is that what I think it is? A journal? Like spies carry?”

The Author has lived in many countries in her life: England, the Philippines, Cuba, Texas (yes, Texas thinks of itself as a separate country), gathering experiences for her writing along the way. She earned Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees from Texas Tech University and The University of Texas at Austin in Anthropology/Archaeology with minors in Art, Geology, and Geography, but she spent her early career as an Archaeological Illustrator of some renown. Radically changing track in 2004 and opening an independent bookstore in an affluent community outside Austin, A Thirsty Mind Words & Wines (one of the first bookstore/wine bars in the country), started her on the road to careers in bookselling, eBook formatting and ultimately writing.

In 2011, she and Zach the dog moved to her small coastal property, Pheasant Cove Farm, in Downeast Maine. She continues her book design and writing careers in the office of her Greek Revival farmhouse surrounded by acres of woods populated with pheasant, moose, deer, raccoon, porcupine and the occasional weasel. She also enjoys her own private beach!

Her first novel, STONE BAY, a Contemporary Romance, was published in March of 2014. It was followed by the High Tide Suspense series, bringing danger to the small village of Stone Bay, Maine: STONE COLD, STONE HEART, STONE FALL, and PRECIOUS STONE (coming summer of 2016). An Interview with Thomasine Rappold

The Lady Who Saw Too MuchTell us about your current series.

The Sole Survivor series consists of three stand-alone historical romances set in a rural town in upstate New York.  In the wake of surviving separate tragedies, the heroine of each book discovers she’s acquired an extraordinary ability.  Maddie from The Lady Who Lived Again has the ability to heal.  Gia from The Lady Who Saw Too Much has prophetic visions, and Daisy from The Lady Who Drew Me In can transfer people’s thoughts onto paper.  They wrestle with accepting and managing the mysterious talents that wreak havoc on their lives, but it’s the love for the heroes that change them forever.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

I’ve just finished The Lady Who Drew Me In, which releases December 20, 2016.

Do you have critique partners?

Yes.  I’ve been a member of a wonderful critique group for over ten years now.  There are five of us, each writing in different genres, but we’re a perfect fit.  These amazingly talented women have made such a tremendous difference in my writing life, and I honestly don’t think I’d be published (or sane) without them.

Was your road to publication fraught with peril or a walk in the park?

If it was a walk in the park, it was a long, long walk.  While not exactly fraught with peril, my journey to publication took well over ten years.  Like most writers, I kept trudging through the rejections and disappointments until my writing improved enough for someone to take notice. Things moved quickly after that.

Tell us about your hero. Give us one of his strengths and one of his weaknesses.

Landen Elmsworth’s family means everything to him, and he’s raised his two younger siblings for several years.  He’s an autocratic man, who prides himself of being master of his own fate and taking care of those he loves.  It’s this very strength that makes his physical weakness all the more frustrating to him.  He faints at the sight of blood.

Tell us about your heroine.  Give us one of her strengths and one of her weaknesses.

Gia possesses a formidable determination to do whatever she can to protect others, specifically, Landen.  Her greatest weakness is her former addiction to opiates.

Do you have any words of inspiration for aspiring writers?

Absolutely.  It’s simple: Keep writing and don’t give up.  Be patient with the process and take the time to learn your craft.

Do you or have you belonged to a writing organization?  Which one? Have they helped you with your writing? How?

I’ve been a member of RWA for several years.  I’m also a member of the Capital Region Romance Writers.  Membership in both groups has helped my writing in more ways than I can count.  Writing is a solitary profession, and connecting with other writers was like finding my tribe. There’s so much to learn about the craft and business side of writing, and romance writers are generous with their time and their talents.

Did you have several manuscripts finished before you sold? If so, did you send them out yourself?

The first manuscript I sold was the fifth one I’d written.  That fifth manuscript also landed me a wonderful agent.  Until I was agented, I submitted my manuscripts myself.

Having achieved your goal to be a published author, what is the most rewarding thing?

When someone tells me how much they enjoyed my story.  Bar none.

EXCERPT

TheLadyWhoSawTooMuchTour copyWhen Gia awoke later that day, the sun was setting. She sat at the window, staring out at the lake. Beneath the pink and orange horizon, water rippled on the breeze. Despite how tired she’d been when she’d fallen into bed, she’d had trouble falling asleep. To her surprise, once she succumbed to her exhaustion, she’d slept soundly for hours. Now that she was awake, all her troubles stirred to life too.

Clara’s recovery reinforced what Gia had always known, but had lately forgotten. Landen was in danger. She felt lost and alone. Afraid.

“You’re awake.”

She started at the sound of Landen’s voice.

“How is she?” Gia asked as he stepped into the room.

“Sound asleep,” he said. “I’ve no doubt she’ll be out until morning.”

Gia nodded. “You must be exhausted as well.”

“On the contrary. I feel wide awake.”

He yanked his shirt from the waist of his trousers. The disheveled result caused a hitch in her throat. The intimacy of seeing him this way, in this room where they’d come so close to consummating their marriage, took her by storm. Had that been only yesterday?

Memories flashed through her mind. The charge of excitement that followed made it feel like a lifetime since he’d carried her naked to the bed. She rose to her feet, though she wasn’t sure why. Her breasts tingled with arousal. The heat flushing her cheeks pooled at her core.

“Are you hungry?”

She shook her head, summoning her voice through her lust. “Not at all.”

He stepped toward her, unbuttoning his shirt as he moved. “Did you get enough sleep?”

“Yes.”

His blue eyes brimmed with need, not hatred, and she all but melted into a hot puddle at his feet.

“Are you certain?”

She nodded, heart pounding as he moved even closer.

“Good.” He stripped off his shirt. “Now get back into bed.”

A visit with Olivia Dade

Ready To FallWhat genre(s) do you write in and why?

To this point, all of my published books are contemporary romantic comedies. Which surprises people who know my background, since I earned my M.A. in American History and worked as both a history teacher and a costumed interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg. Historical romance might seem like a better fit, but…I’m a perfectionist. Also a tiny bit lazy. I would be paralyzed by the prospect of getting the historical details wrong, but unwilling to put in the extensive research required to make sure that didn’t happen. So contemporary romance turned out to be a better fit for me, especially since I love making pop culture references in my writing.

I’ve also written a futuristic romance, but it’s much darker than my contemporary romances. I’ll eventually publish it as the first in a series under a different pen name, just because it’s so different from my other work.

Tell us about your current series.

Ready to Fall is the fourth book in my Lovestruck Librarians series. Each of the books focuses on a different librarian in the Nice County Public Library system, which is located in the heart of rural Maryland. And the heroines are all friends, so they invade each other’s stories on a regular basis.

Although the books can stand alone, I think people who read all of them will enjoy the callbacks and connections with other stories. At least, I hope so!

What is your next project and when will it be released?

The fifth book in my series, Driven to Distraction, will come out in early 2017. I had a fantastic time writing it, since the dynamic between Constance (the Bookmobile manager) and Sam (the library’s hot IT expert) is so much fun.

The two of them meet for the first time in the margins of the third book, Mayday, and their attraction is both immediate and intense. So is their bickering. In Driven to Distraction, I stick them together in the tight confines of the Bookmobile for a week and watch all their defenses against one another crumble to dust. Like I said: great fun. I hope readers love the story too!

How likely are people you meet to end up in your next book?

Most of my characters are totally and completely fictional, made up whole cloth from my imagination. But on occasion, I do get inspired by someone I know or someone I meet. That said, I never take people from my life and insert them wholesale into a manuscript. I usually swipe a certain characteristic or a particular experience they had.

For example, a good friend of mine looks very sweet and innocent. But her e-reader contains the filthiest erotica I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Like, hilariously filthy. The first time we looked at each other’s e-book libraries, I was in the midst of asking whether she was offended by graphic sex scenes when I saw the titles and covers of some of her books.

Within a matter of seconds, I went from saying, “This ménage story might be a bridge too far for you” to “No bridge ever created in the history of humanity would ever be too far for you. Brava!” And a very similar scene takes place in a book I wrote between librarian manuscripts.

I hope my friend forgives me. Sorry, J***!

What is most difficult for you to write? Characters, conflict or emotions? Why?

External conflict—something from the outside that keeps the hero and heroine apart, rather than simply their pasts, their fears, or their disparate desires—can prove difficult for me. I’d blame that on two main factors.

Historically, women’s parents and families exerted much greater control over them. Women had very little legal and economic recourse at times. Issues of class and race kept people apart much more effectively. Voila! External conflict ahoy! But in contemporary America, that’s much less common. All the relationships I’ve ever seen falter or fail have done so because of internal reasons. Because of emotional or physical disconnection, rather than a family feud or a bizarre inheritance or amnesia. So coming up with new ways to keep my couple apart—ways that aren’t internal in nature—can be tricky in contemporary romance.

(Unless you write about vampires or werewolves. Then you’re pretty much set on the external conflict front, and I’m happy for you. And a little jealous.)

Also, I love writing internal conflict. When I’m reading someone else’s book, that’s what I’ll remember—the emotional journey of the central couple, rather than the specifics of the plot. So I sometimes overlook the external conflict issue until my critique partner reads the opening of my manuscript.

Her: “But what’s actually keeping them apart, besides their fears?”

Me: “Ummm…”

Her: [waits patiently]

Me: “Dammit.”

Give us an elevator pitch for your book.

ReadyToFallTour copyTo get the attention of her elusive coworker, Sarah Mayhew needs to learn to ride a bike at the age of thirty-two. Her teacher: Chris Dean, the hot cyclist whose ex dumped him for his best friend. Even though he wants Sarah, he refuses to get involved yet again with a woman who wants another man. But a few hot summer nights spent together might convince them both to change their minds and risk falling hard.

Do you prefer to read in the same genres you write in or do you avoid reading that genre? Why?

I normally love all romance genres: contemporary, historical, futuristic, paranormal, erotic, etc. But when I’m in the middle of writing my books, I assiduously avoid anything too similar to what I’m writing. That means no contemporary romance, at least not until my story is finished. Otherwise, I worry that I’ll unconsciously ape the voice or borrow the phrasing of another writer. Reading outside the genre in which I write helps protect me against that.

What do you have planned for the future?

WORLD DOMINATION.

::clears throat:: Please ignore that. Just a slip of the tongue.

Since I’m totally not planning to conquer the Earth, I’m excited about starting a new series soon! After binge-watching way too much HGTV during a bout with bronchitis in January, I plotted out several novellas loosely inspired by various shows on that channel.

I mean, don’t you want David and Hilary from Love It Or List It to make out? Of course you do! And I’m going to make that happen for you. (Fictionally, at least. I can’t actually force the real people to french each other, despite my wishes.) It’s going to be glorious and ever so naughty.

Excerpt:

“Why did Helen send you here?” Chris asked.

Sarah fished a folded printout from her huge purse and slapped it on the counter. “Take a look.”

He unfolded the paper and scanned the text. Apparently, the faculty and staff of Spring Ridge Elementary School had been invited to participate in a bike retreat as part of a new fitness initiative. That still didn’t explain what she wanted from him, however.

“It’s hot enough out there to cook us like rotisserie chickens.” Sarah tapped a finger on the flyer. “I’ll be surprised if more than a dozen teachers survive the day. But at least our meat will be juicy and flavorful.”

Stifling another grin, he started making his way to the store entrance. Time to end this conversation and usher her out. “If you need a volunteer to give the bikes a tune-up or someone to sponsor the event, keep looking. I can’t. Like I said, this is a pretty new shop. I have too many things to do and not a lot of extra money.”

Instead of following him to the door, she turned around and leaned her curvy butt against the counter. “That’s not why I’m here. I need you to teach me how to ride a bike before that retreat.”

And there it was. The reason for all this. “You want to learn how to ride in three days?”

“Yes.” She smiled again, clearly pleased that he’d grasped the situation at long last.

“And you want me to teach you? Over the Fourth of July holiday? On top of my normal schedule here at the shop?”

Her smile began to fade. “Yes.”

Jesus, this had to be a joke. In what universe would Helen ever believe he’d give a grown woman riding lessons after work? Him, the man she often called the pissiest human being on the face of the Earth? Unless . . .

“Is Helen trying to set us up?” Unable to resist, he scanned Sarah’s lush body one last time. “You can tell her she got my type right. But I’m not ready to date again. Sorry.”

Sarah remained silent for a long moment, taking what appeared to be a confused look down at herself. Then she raised her head and stared directly at him.

“This isn’t a setup. This is—I mean, I am—a woman who needs to learn how to ride a bike in three days for the sake of true love.” As his mouth opened, she clarified, “Don’t worry. True love for another man. Not you.”

“True love?” he repeated.

“True love,” she confirmed.

A bitter smile curved his mouth. “In that case, you’re definitely wasting your time,” he told her. “Love is the absolute last reason I’d do anything for anyone right now.”

BIO

Olivia Dade author photoOlivia Dade grew up an undeniable nerd, prone to ignoring the world around her as she read any book she could find. Her favorite stories, though, were always romances. As an adult, she earned an M.A. in American history and worked in a variety of jobs that required her to hide her bawdy interior under a demure exterior: Colonial Williamsburg interpreter, high school teacher, academic tutor, and (of course) librarian. Finally, though, she realized the call of the hussy could no longer be denied. So now she writes contemporary romantic comedy with plenty of sex, banter, and nerdery. When not writing, she cooks alongside her husband, dabbles in photography, and tries to hide her collection of throbbing-intensive romances from her curious daughter.

An Interview with Dena Garson

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000037_00023]What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and sci-fi romance. Why? Because that’s what the voices in my head tell me to do. LOL. Actually – I love romance. I love happy ever afters. I read it to escape, so naturally I want to write about it. As for the sub-genres I write it, all I can say is that when I get an idea for a story, I write it. I’m not picky about only writing in category. I just want to tell the story that I see in my head.

What inspired your latest book?

A song! While I liked the original, Five Finger Death Punch’s remake of House of the Rising Sun triggered the idea for Rege’s Rescue as I drove to work.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

I’m working on a Native American (historical) paranormal. I don’t have a release date yet but I have committed to turning it over to my first editor mid July. So, hopefully I’ll be able to release it later this year

What is your typical day like?

I do have a day-job. So, M-F I work normal hours. I often use my lunch hour to take care of writer business or get in an hour worth of writing. After work, if one of the boys has a sporting thing (practice or game) I might grab my laptop and head to the fields. Their dad is pretty good about taking them to practices. And now that my oldest has his driver’s license (*cringe*) some of the pressure to run here and there is off of me so I can settle in at home and work on my stories! Of course, there is the occasional squirmish to resolve between the boys – always around the xbox.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

I love it! I love being able to pick my own covers and cover artists. I love deciding when my book will come out and at what price. I love having the control. It does take a lot more of my time, but the benefits far outweigh what I give up to a publisher. And I’ve learned so much about the inner working of the business doing it myself. That is invaluable knowledge!

Do you have critique partners?

Yup! And I <3 them so hard. If for no other reason than because this is such a solitary business that the touchstone to another person to confirm that I’m not insane makes me feel better.

What is your favorite dessert/food?

Ooooo. Hard question because it varies with my mood – for dessert anyway. I will say that there is nothing better than homemade mashed potatoes. That is my ultimate comfort food.

What is most difficult for you to write?  Characters, conflict or emotions?  Why?

I’d have to say conflict. Probably because I avoid it like the plague in my real life. I am such a mediator! I don’t want anyone unhappy or to get their feelings hurt.

What genres are you drawn to as a reader?

Romance for sure, but whatever catches my attention. Historical, paranormal, fantasy, contemporary. I have my go-to authors that I pick up without question. And I read my author friends books too.

Do you prefer to read in the same genres you write in or do you avoid reading that genre? Why?

I do read in the same genre, but I won’t read that genre while I’m writing a book in it. So if I’m working on a contemporary, I’ll usually pick up a historical or paranormal. I don’t want the book I’m reading to influence the one I’m writing.

Has your muse always known what genre you would write and be published in?

I sometimes think my muse has multiple personality disorder. She has no idea what she wants to be when she grows up and, like me, has varying tastes. She makes me hop from book to book at any given time. *sigh*

Do you write under a pen name?   Why or why not?

Yes, I do. I created it because my first books were with Ellora’s Cave. And quite frankly, was warned that there are a lot of weirdos out there and I didn’t want that creeping over to my kids’ lives.

Rege’s Rescue Excerpt:

Rege Rovnitov’s instincts went on high alert as soon as his boot crossed the shop’s threshold.

Even over the heavy scent of leather, he detected burned ozone. A weapon had been fired. Debris scattered on the floor and countertop said there had been a struggle.

He pulled his own weapon from its holster at his back and edged farther into Tauxir’s store. There were no patrons inside and he hadn’t seen anyone leaving. This part of the city drew rough clientele, but Tauxir had a solid reputation for being an honest businessman as well as being a man you didn’t want to fuck with.

Whoever decided to take something of Tauxir’s must have a death wish.

Rege grinned. Maybe this day wouldn’t be a waste after all.

Using all of his senses to piece together what had happened he moved deeper into the store.

A roar followed by a crash came from the backroom. He leapt over an overturned stool and cleared the last steps to the doorway in one bound. Yanking the curtain aside, he leveled his gun’s laser sight on the first thing that moved.

His entrance was met by one pissed off and bloodied leatherworker. Tauxir held a similar gun and Rege suspected Tauxir’s laser was aimed right at his heart.

“You okay?” Rege asked without relaxing his stance.

Tauxir’s jaw flexed as if still debating whether or not to fire. “No,” he finally ground out between clenched teeth.

Rege glanced around the room to make sure there were no threats. “What happened?”

Tauxir lowered his gun and spit. “Slavers.”

Rege also lowered his weapon but didn’t holster it. “What did they want with you?”

Pain flashed in Tauxir’s eyes. “Amethe.”

Son of a bitch. Tauxir’s daughter. “They took her?”

He nodded once then pulled a wicked knife from underneath his worktable and pushed it into a sheath.

“How long has she been back?”

“Two nights.” Tauxir strapped the knife to his thigh then grabbed two more and slipped those in their respective places.

Rege pushed the button on the communicator wrapped around his ear. “Call Bolan.”

Tauxir half limped, half dragged himself toward the stairs. Thinking he might need help getting upstairs, Rege closed in.

Tauxir leaned against the wall and slid a concealed panel aside. He entered a code which activated a small door at their feet below the stairs. Even from where he stood, Rege could see the impressive collection of weapons.

“Yeah,” Bolan’s terse answer finally came through Rege’s earpiece.

“Grab Vordol and Malir and get to Tauxir’s. We’ve got a situation.”

“Be there in ten.” No complaints, no unnecessary questions. That was the beauty of the brotherhood. Always there for each other no matter what.

“Not your problem,” Tauxir said gruffly without looking up from his stash of weapons.

“You’re a brother. If you’ve got a problem, we all have a problem. You know that.”
