The Crow and Blackfoot of the Montana Territory, Shirleen Davies

shirleendavies_promisetrail_800The Crow and the Blackfoot were two tribes of Montana whose lands overlapped. Both play a significant role in my newest historical western romance book, Promise Trail.

The Crows, sometimes we’re referred to as the “Crow Nation” derived their name from their own native word, Aspalooke, which literally means “children of a long-beaked bird,” but the French translated as “People of The Crow.”

The Blackfoot Tribe, or sometimes “The Blackfoot Confederacy,” traced their lands to around Alberta, Canada, but stretched all the way to the Yellowstone River of Montana. They were united by a common language, and originally carried the name Niitsitapi, literally translated “the original people.”

Although tradition made them enemies, each tribe had many similarities. Both were nomadic hunter-gatherers, lived in teepees, were expert horsemen, and hunted buffalo.

crow_indians_chief-1Spirituality was important to both tribes, each embracing a mystical, earth-based religion. Both tribes believed everything in nature—plants, trees, rivers, mountains, and rocks—had a spirit. Crow and Blackfoot men used sacred sweat lodges to breathe in the steam from the sacred rocks, allowing mother earth to draw negative energy and toxins from their bodies and spirits.  The men emerged sweaty and virile, cleansed and rejuvenated.

In their language, (Siouan), The Crow call themselves Absaroka, (opp-sah-loh-kay) children of the large-beaked bird. French traders translated it to (gens du corbeaux in French), people of the crows.

Appearance was important to the Crow. Men never cut their sleek, beautiful hair. It flowed from their broad warrior shoulders past their muscled chests and flat stomachs to their powerful thighs and calves, and down to their feet. Oiled with bear’s grease, their long hair shined like raven feathers. When hunting or fighting, they’d pull the long tresses into a bun.

Crow men took great pride in their dress, wearing opulent sun-bleached buffalo robes which were a brighter white and finer than those of other tribes.

The Crow were generally a friendly people, even towards the white settlers, securing them a sizable reservation in Montana. They’re main food source came in the form of American Bison, which they hunted with impressive efficiency and innovation. They also used the bison skins for clothing in the winter and for their traditional shelters, the tipi and skin lodge.  Their main form of transport came in the horses, which they learned to breed and keep.

blackfoot-blackfeet-indian-woman-child-history-tribe-1Crow women played an important role in society and were well regarded, evidenced by the fact that when a couple married it was always the man who moved into her home and never the other way around.

The Blackfoot were named that by French fur traders who watched them walk through a prairie fire, noticing the black bottoms of their moccasins. The name the Blackfoot called themselves means Lords of the Plains. And their plains, the majestic Blackfoot territory, held more buffalo per square mile than anywhere.

Four northwestern plains tribes made up the Blackfoot Confederacy: the North Piegan, the South Piegan, the Blood, and the Siksika tribes. They shared the same language and culture, had treaties of mutual defense, gathered for ceremonial rituals, and freely intermarried.

These handsome lords of the plains fashioned their flowing hair into three long braids with a topknot or pompadour. The women wore their hair loose or in two long, thick braids.

A war-like people, the Blackfoot granted a great deal of honor and tribal esteem to members who committed brave and heroic deeds. They played a significant role in the Indian wars.

I’d love to hear your insights or comments about the Crow and Blackfoot people. Please feel free to email me at blackfoot_indian_chief_big_mouth_springshirleen@shirleendavies.com.

Enjoy your reading. I hope it includes a Cowboy!

Promise Trail, Book Six, Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Series

Shirleen Davies

Bull Mason has built a life far away from his service in the Union Army and the ravages of the Civil War. He’s achieved his dreams—loyal friends, work he enjoys, a home of his own, and a promise from the woman he loves to become his wife.

Lydia Rinehart can’t believe how much her life has changed. Escaping captivity from a Crow village, she finds refuge and a home at the sprawling Redemption’s Edge ranch…and love in the arms of Bull Mason, the ranch foreman. For the first time since her parents’ death, she feels cherished and safe.

In an instant their dreams are crushed…

Bull is resolute in his determination to track down and rescue Lydia’s brother, kidnapped during the celebration of their friend’s wedding. He’s made a promise—one he intends to keep. Picking the best men, they are ready to ride, until he’s given an ultimatum.

Choices can seldom be undone…

As their journey continues, the trackers become the prey, finding their freedom and lives threatened.

And promises broken can rarely be reclaimed…

Can Bull and Lydia trust each other again and find their way to back to the dreams they once shared?

Promise Trail is book six in the Redemption Mountain historical western romance series. It is a full length novel with an HEA and no cliffhanger.

Excerpt:

The first thing Bull noticed was her hair. The glorious, long strawberry blonde locks had been cut away, but he had no time to comment before his head exploded at her ear-piercing scream.

“Lydia, stop. It’s Bull. I’m taking you home.”

Holding both arms above her head to fend him off, she didn’t look up, panic taking control. “I won’t go back. I’ll never go back.”

Ignoring her words, he slipped an arm around her back, attempting to pick her up. Instead, her body jerked, arms flailing as she tried to push him away.

“No, no, no. I don’t want to leave.” Her words cut through him, but didn’t deter Bull’s response.

Capturing her wrists in one hand, he drew them above her head, searching her eyes. The pain, fear, and panic he saw might have deterred a weaker man. That man wasn’t Bull Mason. Behind the anguish and terror, he could still see the love, the Lydia he’d want until the day he died.

Tightening his grip, he leaned closer. “I’m not leaving you here. You can walk or I’ll toss you over my shoulder, but you are coming with me.”

Fear turned to resolve as she glared back at him, her voice rising. “I won’t go back to the ranch or Splendor or anywhere with you.”

“Of course you’re going back.” His grip loosened a little. Big mistake.

Hardening her heart, she said the only thing she hoped would stop him. “I don’t love you anymore.”

She saw pain flicker across his face, her chest constricting at his agonized expression. An instant later, to her dismay, it was replaced by a look of pure determination.

“To hell with this.” His muttered words were followed by him picking her up, flinging her over his shoulder. Exiting the tipi, he felt her hands beat on his back, her feet connecting with his legs. “Stop it, Lydia. We’re going home. You can tell me how much you hate me later.”

A visit with Regency author Heather Boyd

avwc_533_72dpiTell us a little about yourself.

Greetings. I’m Heather Boyd a regency historical romance author, indie published, and sole female in a testosterone fueled household. (Even the cat is male)

Have you always known what genre you would write and be published in?

The first books I read to death, and devoured, were regency romance novels. But that wasn’t until I had worked my way through fantasy, science fi, and paranormal novels as a young adult. Romance books kept me up late, made me laugh out loud, at a time when I really needed that. It seemed natural to write my own stories in that genre. Regency romance makes me happy.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

Self-publishing has been fantastic. I love all the ins and outs of producing my books the way I want them and setting my own schedules. I’m a full time writer and I’m grateful that my self-employment allows me to drop everything when family needs me. Which they have of late. My usual writing routine has been turned on its ear by a new and ongoing family commitment that takes me away from my desk for a greater portion of my writing week. I’m attempting to adapt and because I’m self-publishing I only answer to me.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

Be aware that self-publishing is for the long haul and its often a bumpy road. Keeping your own motivation and confidence up can be an ongoing battle. Keeping on track to meet your deadlines, keeping your relationships and yourself healthy is important too.

What is your next project and when will it be released?

My next project is a multi-author Christmas anthology: A Very Wicked Christmas. Releasing October 18, A Very Wicked Christmas anthology features the best in regency romance. Here’s a little taste:

Six of today’s most popular regency romance authors come together to deliver a holiday anthology full of passion, promise, and scandalous dalliance.

In Heather Boyd’s The Christmas Affair, a lonely shopkeeper offers shelter to a beautiful, not so innocent miss to overcome the bitter memories of Christmases past, but could such a wicked connection ever lead to a happily-ever-after? A dashing spy with marriage on his mind seeks to rekindle the spark by any means possible with the woman who claimed his heart in Love at First Dance by Barbara Monajem. A scandalous widow rescues the man of her dreams – but his secrets could destroy their love in Nicola Davidson‘s Joy to the Earl. A masquerade ball was no place to be reckless with your innocence, and yet one scorching look at the masked highwayman urges Miss Partridge to do just that in Mistletoe and the Marquess by Wendy Vella. In Lord Misrule by Donna Cummings, a young widow chooses a handsome rogue to be her first lover, but his regrets from a past Christmas may end their affair before it even commences. A blue-stocking becomes a courtesan to escape a murderer in The Glittering Prize, an intrigue-filled romance by Beverley Oakley about finding love where it’s least expected.

I have a long excerpt from my story The Christmas Affair available to read on my website, but here’s a short peek at it here too.

“Shouldn’t you get back inside to the warmth? Your wife will be wondering where you are.”

He stared at her a long moment and then blinked. “My wife passed away.”

A hard lump formed in her throat, and she took a step toward him. So that explained why she’d not seen his wife recently. But then, to her shame, she had only ever really cared about the ever-changing window display and Mr. Cabot’s fine and unavailable presence. “I am so sorry.”

He nodded sharply, his lips pressing together, and glanced aside. “It was sudden.”

Amy took another step closer as he shivered. He was not dressed to be out of doors. His hair was wet and slicked back from his face, and he wore a banyan of thick and luxurious brocade, the type a wealthy lord might wear in the privacy of his own bedchamber.

He looked as if he had been getting ready for bed.

A warm bed.

An empty bed.

It took a second to formulate a new plan for her night, but then she felt shame and disgust in herself. She could not attempt to seduce a man who was grieving. It was not fair to him and would only lead to her own humiliation. She had had enough of that for one day. “You should go in, sir.”

He refocused his attention on her. “Were you going to sleep under those crates tonight?”

She hesitated to answer but then nodded. What was the point of lying about it? Since her mother’s death, she had learned to accept that she did not deserve anything more than to be where she was. “I will be quiet. I promise. You won’t even know I’m outside your door.”

“Have you no home, no one to wonder where you are?”

He frowned when she shook her head again and then glanced around at the deserted, dirty lane.

He really needed to return indoors before his hair froze. Amy backed away. If she pretended to leave, he would not have an excuse to linger. Once he had gone inside, she could sneak back and quietly creep into her shelter again.

“Please go back inside before you catch a chill. I will go. I don’t want to be any trouble.”

He stared at her so long she started to tremble for an entirely different reason. Mr. Cabot saw her at last, but this was not how she had imagined the moment. She had nothing to recommend herself. No money to spend in his shop, no beauty with which to capture his attention.

He followed her a few steps and then bent down to pick up the sticks she’d dropped when he’d first made himself known to her.

He turned them over in his bare hands a moment, eyes widening, but then shook his head repeatedly. He flung them aside and gestured to his open rear door. “You should come in. There’s a safer and warmer place for you with me.”

What is your favorite dessert/food?

All of them: Baked Cheesecake, Pavlova, Fruit Salad, Ice Cream, Apple Pie, Bread and Butter Pudding, Plum Pudding, Trifle and many, many more. I have a wicked sweet tooth and dessert IS the most important meal of the day. *grin*

Do you have a view in your writing space? What does your space look like?

My house has a great view of Lake Macquarie on the Australian East Coast, however it’s a huge distraction so my writing space is at the very back of the house. The glare off the water can also be a pain and without the views I’m much more focused and productive. Last Summer I finally set up the room properly, de-cluttered, repainted, upholstered my writing couch, hung favorite pictures. It’s a lovely space to work in and it’s a pleasure to go to work.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently writing the fourth story in the Rebel Hearts regency romance series, and a sixth story in the Hunt Club gay regency romance series, and for something fun I’m venturing into contemporary romance.

Alpha, Beta, Omega – A shifter box set

alpha-beta-omegaHealer’s Fate

by Beth Caudill

Liam couldn’t watch the ceremony that would mate Corliss to someone else. He could’ve challenged for her, but that meant fighting his father—the ruling wolf, who was neither a tyrant nor senile. Both of them in their prime, a fight would have ended in one of their deaths, and he couldn’t justify the loss of life.

Not even for her. Unable to keep control of his wolf, Liam shifted to animal form and sought solace in the forest. Except every tree, every fragrance roused memories of her, and the wolf sprinted towards the ceremonial clearing. His paws swiftly traversed the distance until he scented the woman who should be his.

Stark quiet alerted him to trouble as the wolf crept along the edge of the grass. People were missing and those who remained stood as if waiting for the ceremony to start. He circled around to the front to get a better view, hiding in the shadows so as not to alert anyone. Raymond was unaccounted for. Corliss stood stiff-backed, facing away from the audience.

Her caramel-colored hair was piled atop her head, darkened to walnut in the moonlight. Shadows hid her sea-green eyes and emphasized her high cheekbones. She appeared cold, harsh, and removed from events going on around her. Yet he knew her to be warm and caring, often too caring.

Through her healing powers, she gave more of her personal energy than she should. As her friend, he could offer support, but he couldn’t push too hard for her to rest, or she’d rip out his throat.

He chuffed. The dark green specks in her eyes glowed when she was angry. That spark had been missing from her eyes for days. He repressed a growl as Corliss bit the inside of her cheek. Before the wind shifted, he backed away. She wouldn’t appreciate anyone seeing her close to tears.

The wolf wanted to rip a hole in Raymond’s belly, but even their animals had rules for a challenge. He trotted to a cache of clothes. Only the human half of his soul could help her now.

He let the ever-present hum of insects and familiar mossy pine scent calm his inner turmoil. No one could explain the magic of the werewolves shifting forms, but sometimes an unfocused change resulted in monstrous configurations. And death.

Centered by will alone, he called forth the transformational shift. His fur stood on end as an electric charge built in an invisible bubble around him. Pressure pricked against his skin until just before it became painful. His fur receded and then his body stretched, grew until once again he was Liam, the man.

The tranquility brought on by the change vanished beneath the fury within his heart. Yanking on his jeans, he’d protect Corliss the only way he could. By hunting down his prey.

Independent Body Part movement by J.M. Maurer

Adobe Photoshop PDFI confess…I’ve been ruined by Independent Body Parts moving all around. Have you?

When I first started writing, I didn’t know this phenomenon even existed. The fact that these body parts had effectively detached themselves from their rightful location so they could go about doing all sorts of actions—all by themselves—had me flabbergasted. I’m a registered nurse. How did I not know this was happening?

Now that I’m overly aware of this epidemic, I believe I can prevent many unnecessary visits to the emergency room and significantly reduce those very long wait times. But for now, I will stick to the serious matter at hand. The visions. The ones that occur each time I find independent body parts living in the pages of a book.

Reading was so much better before my brain started releasing the images that follow a line like his nose ran down my shoulder.

Do you see it? A detached nose with stick-figure legs and clown shoes running down a shoulder as if trying to escape the latest virus that is causing the cold of the century?

He must be on his way to the ER.

Quick.

Cue some music from Mission Impossible and…

Stop. That. Nose.

I work hard at neutralizing free-willed body parts in my stories, even though I find them in nearly every book I read. And because of that, I often ponder whether I should give in to the Free-Movement movement—like so many other authors have—and let those body parts do whatever the heck they want. However, a rational part of me is afraid that if I did, those body parts would team up with other body parts and beat me upside the head. In which case, I’d have to adopt a new motto like:

When life knocks you down, get up like the Adams Family hand, get your fingers flying in whichever direction you please, and never give up.

In the Emerging From Darkness trilogy, Jessica Winters and Matthew Moi never give up. With effort and determination, they move beyond each of their dark pasts, find true love, and fight for the beautiful future they so very much deserve. Unfortunately, someone out there isn’t pleased with Jessica and that someone makes it very clear that Jessica’s life is in danger. Aware of the situation, Matthew vows to stop at nothing to keep the love of his life safe. But can he, especially when he doesn’t exactly know what it is he’s protecting her from?

Here’s the blurb for Seeking Hope (Emerging From Darkness Book 3):

I’d been given promises in the past, all of which were broken.

Inevitably, they broke me.

I wouldn’t let those broken promises stop me from believing in new ones, though.

I couldn’t.

Matthew Moi was different.

His dimpled smile and witty sexual banter has held me spellbound since day one.

Falling in love with him came easy.

Marrying him—a dream come true.

Now, he wants something I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready for.

As I struggle, he faithfully remains at my side.

Through it all, his protective nature shields me from an evil I didn’t see coming.

Together, we have it all—love, passion, trust.

Apart, the possibilities are endless, even death.

*Seeking Hope is the final book in the Emerging From Darkness trilogy, and as such, is not intended to be a standalone. The trilogy reads as: Seeking Love, Seeking Redemption, & Seeking Hope. Excerpt:

For the first time in a long time, I had an itch to do something ridiculous—two things, in fact. One was the reason I was sitting in the back of a musty old van. The other might just be the solution to my Holly problem.

At least I hoped so, because while my mind should have been racing with thoughts of my upcoming wedding, it wasn’t. Instead, I was thinking of my best friend. Problem was, no matter how I launched my plan to help Holly move beyond her commitment issue with Burdick, it wasn’t going to go over well. And the more I thought about her, the more I dreaded the growing possibility of a headache. I’d just gotten over a nasty headache and was now attempting to shake off the likelihood of another when the van rolled to a stop and the driver’s voice muttered in the distance.

“We’re here.”

Okay, Jess. You’ve got your plan and it’s a good one.

I was about to remind myself to stick to said plan when the driver hopped out and moved to my side of the van, his open door ushering in a blast of autumn air that chilled my skin. I shivered and scooted to the edge of my seat, waiting for what was to come next. The shrill of metal sliding over metal pierced my ears as the door slid open, and rough skin wrapped a secure hold on my wrist. This was it.

“End of the line.” His gruff tone registered somewhere between the brief time it took him to pull me out and when his tall, burly features came into full view. He snickered as I pulled the hem of my pullover down and worked to smooth it out. Judging by the way his eyes scanned up my body, I presumed his outburst had everything to do with my appearance. After all, this was the first time I’d pieced together an outfit for such an outdoorsy occasion. Eventually, he calmed and took my hand, turning it palm up. “You don’t want to forget this.”

Instinctively, my fingers clasped a tight grip around the cold steel as I stood, staring down at the black metal, hoping I’d do it right. I’d never held a gun before. They all made me nervous. Fact was, with a gun in the wrong hands, things could quickly turn ugly.

I knew all about ugly.

Drawing my attention his way, the driver stretched a tattooed arm, pointed a finger, and then offered his last words of advice. “Never give up.”

A visit with Jenna Jaxon

Heart of DelightHow did you get started writing?

I had just finished reading Kathleen Woodiwiss’s medieval romance Everlasting, which I loved. I was standing in my office at school and looked at my computer and said out loud, “I think I can write something like that.” And literally sat down and started to outline the book that eventually became Time Enough to Love.

What genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write historical romance because I love history and researching and writing about how people lived in other time periods is the most fun I can think of!

Tell us about your current series.

Handful of Hearts is a sweet Regency series that takes place in 1820. The premise of the series is that all the books (other than the first book which is a prequel) begin at Lady Hamilton’s ball in May, at the beginning of the Season. Each of the couples in the series meet at that ball, many of the characters know each other already, and the stories are interwoven at points, but each is stand alone and can be read without the others. The first book, A Kiss Beneath the Mistletoe, begins the Christmas before, but introduces some of the characters who become the heroes and heroines of later novellas.

Was your road to publication fraught with peril or a walk in the park?

Well, it was hardly a walk in the park, but there wasn’t a lot of peril, just a lot of waiting. And rejections by agents and editors. I started writing in January of 2009 and my first short story—ironically the inspiration and final book for this series—was published in 2011. But my first novel wasn’t published until 2012 and just this past April I acquired an agent and in June received an offer of a print contract. So seven years is quite a bit shorter period of time than many writers, but it seemed a long time to me!

What is your favorite dessert/food?

My absolute favorite dessert is Apple Bourbon Bread Pudding (which I cannot eat because of gluten allergies) and my favorite food is Lamb Rogan Josh (Indian Lamb dish).

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently writing both the second book in my Regency series The Widows’ Club tentatively titled To Take a Widow to Wife and a medieval Christmas story that will hopefully release in early November.

What do you have planned for the future?

A lot of writing!  I’m currently under contract for two ebooks and three print books to Kensington Publishing, plus my sweet Regency series which has four more books for me to write.

Tell us about your hero.  Give us one of his strengths and one of his weaknesses.

The hero for Heart of Delight is Lord Halford, Hal to his friends, a somewhat eccentric nobleman who doesn’t care for society’s strictures and rules. To make things worse, his father had decreed he must marry before the Season is out and Hal doesn’t like any of the eligible young ladies of his station. His strength is his willingness to go to great lengths to help people. A weakness is his mercurial temperament that spurs him to do somewhat unorthodox antics—such as pretending to be his valet instead of himself.

Tell us about your heroine.  Give us one of her strengths and one of her weaknesses.

Gabriella d’Aventure is a young woman on a mission. She has taken a position as a lady’s maid and come from France with a very specific purpose—to meet the Duke of Rother. She’s a bit untruthful about why she wants to meet this duke when she encounters and enlists the aid of a young valet during a ball. Gabriella’s strength is her tenacity in her attempt to make this meeting with the duke happen. When she puts her mind to something, she is very focused. Her weakness would be her reluctance to forgive people who have deceived her.

Heart of Delight BLURB:

He’ll do anything to be her heart’s delight—except tell the truth.

Gabriella d’Adventure is on a mission. She has come to England as a lady’s maid in pursuit of the Duke of Rother. When she meets Horace Carpenter, valet to a marquess, she is delighted to enlist his aid in gaining her heart’s desire: a meeting with the duke. But will her growing feelings for the handsome valet interfere with her plans for the duke?

The eccentric Marquess of Halford, Hal to his friends, is tired of the demands of Society, especially his father’s decree that he marry this Season. When a breathtaking young woman intrudes on his solitude, he is captivated and introduces himself as his valet in hopes of learning more about her. Despite his fear about the true motive behind Gabriella’s quest to meet the Duke of Rother, Hal agrees to help her gain an audience with him, all the while praying his deception won’t ruin his chances of winning her love.

Five Fun Places to Visit on Kauai by Patricia Preston

OneWeekInYourArms_blue_600 Jpg_RTPart of One Week in Your Arms takes place on a fictional resort on Kauai, the fourth largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Kauai is regarded as the Garden Isle due to its lush emerald landscapes and tropical flowers. Besides the beach, the island offers some great sights, some of which the heroine, Marla, got to see while she was trapped in paradise with ex-lover and billionaire Carson Blackwell. Wouldn’t we all like to be so lucky!

Kilauea Lighthouse is located on the north shore of the island is Kilauea Point where the historic lighthouse and a wildlife refuge are located. The lighthouse stands at the northernmost point of the island. Completed in 1913, the white lighthouse with its red top helped guide both sea and air travel to the islands until 1976. It is now a historic landmark and open for tours. Also, the surrounding area is a wildlife refuge where many of Hawaii’s tropical birds thrive.

Alekoko Fishpond was supposedly built overnight by mythical island elves known as the Menehune. The Menehune were short, only about two feet tall, and stout. They slept in caves during the day and worked in the mountains at night. Master builders, they could create great feats overnight. They loved dancing, singing, and archery. They used magic arrows on an angry person to replace their anger with love.

Old Koloa Town and Koloa Heritage Trail is located where Kauai’s sugar industry was born in the 1800’s. The historic town represents the sugar plantation era and includes old-fashioned storefronts, a general store, and a vintage Texaco gas station. The gateway to the Koloa is called the Tree Tunnel. A stretch of hundred-year-old eucalyptus trees along Maluhia Road welcomes visitors. The Koloa Heritage Trail offers both cultural and geological sites.

Spouting Horn is a large blowhole on the island’s South Shore. The Spouting Horn releases a huge spray of water during swells when the surf channels into a natural lava tube. The loud hiss and roar of the Spouting Horn is the basis for a local legend. Kaikapu was a large lizard that guarded the coastline, and it would eat anyone who tried to fish or swim along the coast. Liko, a young boy, decided to outwit the lizard. The lizard attacked Liko, who stuck a sharp stick in the lizard’s mouth, then escaped through the lava tube and the blowhole. The lizard chased after the boy and became stuck in the

lava tube. At the Spouting Horn, you can hear trapped Kaikapu’s roar and see her breath spray from the blowhole.

Jurassic Park Falls is officially called Manawaiopuna Falls, but due to being featured in the movie Jurassic Park, the waterfall earned a new nickname. The Manawaiopuna Falls is a 360-foot high waterfall located in a remote area of the island. Once unknown, it is now one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island.

New Release

My newest book, ONE WEEK IN YOUR ARMS, is mainstream contemporary romance filled with witty, charismatic characters. The fun, fast-paced plot features a secret baby, a billionaire baby daddy hero who needs a pretend girlfriend for a week, and a pretty doctor who is desperate to keep her child a secret. Unfortunately for the intrepid heroine, Marla, she needs money for her community clinic so she has no choice but to spend a week in paradise with the one man who can destroy her life. How can she say no?

ONE WEEK IN YOUR ARMS is the first book in Love Heals All series where romance causes havoc, heartache, and humor for a cast of unsuspecting doctors until they realize love heals all.  Published under the Lyrical Shine imprint of Kensington Books, each book can be read as a stand-alone. They do feature the same location and continuing characters. The next book in the series is EVERYTHING HIS HEART DESIRES, coming in Jan 2017.

Excerpt:

She picked up the letter opener. Her heart palpitated in sheer terror as she slid the opener under the flap of the envelope. With the envelope open, she peeped inside to see one folded sheet of stationery.

After six years, what could he possibly have to say?

She pictured him, standing beside a black truck in the drive of Royal Oaks, an old estate belonging to his grandmother. She recalled the date. June twenty-eighth. The day they had said goodbye had been a warm, blustery day in Tennessee. A summer storm was heading toward the rolling hills near Nashville.

The wind made a mess of Carson’s unruly dark hair. His dark blue eyes were hidden by a pair of mirrored lens aviators, and his alpha-male physique tested the seams of his polo shirt.

“If I’m ever back in town, I’ll look you up,” he promised as their casual affair came to an inevitable end. For three weeks, they had been together and finally, the time had come for them to go their separate ways. She hadn’t realized it would be so difficult.

“Sure.” She forced a smile of goodwill. After all, they weren’t parting in anger, or in love for that matter. And it was unlikely that she would ever see him again.

“I had a great time,” she confessed boldly. She’d loved every minute of their brief, steamy affair. Talk about a summer break to remember. She grinned.

He gave her cheek a stroke. “You’ll make a great doctor.”

“You think so?”

“Yeah.” He grinned. “You certainly know all there is to know about male anatomy.”

“Yours, at least.” She laughed. Then she hopped up on her toes and gave him a quick kiss. “Goodbye, Carson Blackwell.”

She stepped away from him. Now was the time to face what was ahead. A grueling three-year residency. There would be no more time for long summer nights, tangled sheets, and sighs against swollen lips. She walked toward her small, sturdy hatchback. Before she opened the driver’s door, she looked up and met his gaze.

“Goodbye,” he called.

At that moment, she’d had an odd sensation in her chest that her life was never going to be the same.

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY—OH, MAYBE NOT by Irene Vartanoff

adaughter-ebook-300dpiYesterday I had one of those experiences that make me feel I only open my mouth to insert my foot. My most recently released book, A Daughter’s a Daughter, starts with a bang when my fiftyish heroine loses her job in the Wall Street meltdown. Suddenly she’s forced to confront the emptiness of her life since her husband died and her daughter grew up and became estranged.

It’s an enticing storyline to women in midlife, since so many of us come to a crossroads and don’t immediately know which way we’re going next. This book features a new romance for Pam, my main heroine, a new professional direction in her life, and much personal growth in her family relationships. The story also is told from the point of view of her ambitious young daughter, Linley, a cable television financial reporter who has a hot love affair with her handsome coworker. If that’s not interesting enough, there’s a new neighbor next door to Pam’s mother, Dorothy, out at the beach on Long Island, and he’s using his cute dog to start up a friendship with the redoubtable old lady because he has a secret agenda.

I brought a copy of A Daughter’s a Daughter over to a friend’s house as a gift. Okay so far, but then I goofed. When she asked me what it was about, I felt compelled to mention that the heroine realizes during the course of the story that her previously extremely competent, retired social activist mother has begun to develop dementia. I don’t want to sideswipe anyone who is having a hard time with a family member or friend in a similar situation. So I mentioned the dementia, which is just one of many interesting adult issues in this story, and my friend immediately shut down. I’m pretty sure she’ll never read my book, which is a shame, because my elderly character, Dorothy, is a grand old gal who has led a fascinating life and is still a vivid personality.

Women’s fiction is not just about young people falling in love and marrying the right person for the first time. In the women’s fiction world, both good stuff and bad stuff happens. Yet by the end of the story, the main heroine comes to a position of peace and acceptance about the things she can’t change, and she’s also made great inroads on changing the things she has discovered are within her power to change. Pam, my fiftyish heroine, grows and makes new choices. She faces up to the life situations that previously daunted her. But of course her mom isn’t going to suddenly be cured of dementia. Am I supposed to invent a fake medical breakthrough or pretend old age never happens?

A Daughter’s a Daughter is a story of life renewal for my baby boomer heroine. Through her mother’s memories, it’s my nod to the post-World War II years, to the women who were young wives then and coped with a very different world from the one we have now. And then there’s the annoyingly self-centered young heroine (who isn’t as nasty as the daughter in Mildred Pierce, but she comes close), who finally learns the lesson that she ought to treat others better. This story even has a cute dog, too.

I hope being honest about just one aspect of this big, juicy read has not doomed the copy sitting on my friend’s end table to remain unopened. Enjoy the excerpt below and consider checking out the many pleasures of A Daughter’s a Daughter.

 EXCERPT from A Daughter’s a Daughter:

“I got us a great opportunity. A spot on the Today Show tomorrow morning. They want to interview you about how it feels to have been laid off from Menahl.”

Pam grimaced. Those jackals outside the building this morning had wanted fresh blood, too. “Thousands were let go. Why talk to me?”

“Because I called them and pitched it.” There was great satisfaction in Linley’s tone. Her daughter was triumphant at having arranged an opportunity for Pam to be an object of pity on national television. “You wouldn’t believe how many news agencies are interested,” Linley continued. “The Today Show is the big deal.”

“That’s nice, dear. Couldn’t you do it by yourself?” She’d never been comfortable as the center of attention.

“Of course not. They want the story from the person directly involved. From you.” The impatience was in her daughter’s voice again, the undertone that said Pam knew nothing.

The moment stretched out silently.

“You’ll do it, right?” Linley prodded.

Pam cringed at the idea of exposing herself in public. She’d like to help Linley, of course, but she did not want to be on television. “Why not interview Magda instead? She has a more dramatic story. Magda works with—” she corrected herself, stumbling over her words, “she worked with me. She has a son she’s putting through college. Tuition is due in a month and she has no way of making payments if she doesn’t have a job.”

“The interview is with you and me, not with Magda.”

“I’d rather not be on television,” Pam said.

“Say yes.”

“I’d freeze up.”

“I promised you’d be on. Don’t make me a liar.”

“I hate being the center of attention. I can’t.”

“How can you be so selfish?” Linley wailed. “You’re ruining my day.”

Linley clicked off.

Pam stared at the phone. Linley had hung up on her. Oh, technically, Linley could not hang up a telephone she carried in her pocket, but it was the same thing.  Her daughter had hung up on her.

Useless tears trickled down Pam’s cheeks. Why was she so weak? So afraid of being in the public eye?

She and Linley hardly communicated anymore. Unlike her, Linley was ambitious. Linley’s quick success in her glamour career had reinforced her opinion that she was far superior to her mother. An adolescent attitude that hadn’t changed in a decade.

Ten minutes later, the phone rang again.

“It’s me,” Linley said, her voice hard. “You’ve got to do the Today Show. Otherwise, I’ll lose the spot.”

“I—I…”

“If you don’t do this for me, I’ll never speak to you again.”

Pam gasped.

“I mean it,” Linley said.

“You’ll be interviewed, too?” Pam choked out the question.

“Yes.”

“I won’t have to be alone?”

“Yes,” was the impatient reply. Linley didn’t bother to coax.

Pam knew what hung in the balance. “It will help your career?” she asked, anyway.

“Are you kidding?” Linley named the time and the address. “Be there. Or I’ll never speak to you again. Never.” She clicked off.

Pam hung up the land line and stared into space. Linley had not asked her for anything in years. Now suddenly, she demanded this from her mother.

What if Pam made a fool of herself? Being on live television was exactly the kind of public exposure from which she had always shrunk. What if she started crying? Would Linley feel guilty? Would she care?

No use going there. All Linley thought about was the publicity for herself. Was there a chance that doing this would revive their old mother-daughter closeness? In case there was, Pam would go on the Today Show. But how could she keep from making an utter fool of herself or breaking down?

She picked up the phone again. When Dorothy answered, Pam said, “Mom, I need your help.”

An Interview with Anya Summers

lovememasterme-small-copyWhere do you get the ideas for your stories?

I get them from all over from songs to people watching at the airport to visiting a museum. There’s not one particular place or thing that triggers the inspiration for a story. They tend to originate from all walks of life.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the eighth book in this series, Her Wired Dom.

How far do you plan ahead?

With my busy writing schedule, I tend to plan pretty far ahead in advance. For instance, my 2017 writing schedule is almost completely on the books.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

I wanted to be an astronaut and explore outer space. I thought that had to be the coolest job ever, at least until I discovered how much math you need. My dream was dashed by the ripe old age of ten.

What is your writing routine like?

When I’m getting ready to begin a new book, first I construct a loose chapter by chapter outline. Then I write the first draft from start to finish with no editing. I do a ton of sprinting to get the draft completed. Once I have the initial manuscript, I go back through from start to finish editing and fleshing out scenes.

Describe the genre of this particular title, and is the only genre you write in?

Love Me, Master Me is an Erotic Romance and the sixth book in the Dungeon Fantasy Club Series. I also write urban fantasy and paranormal romance under the name, Maggie Mae Gallagher.

Tell us about your hero. Give us one of his strengths and one of his weaknesses.

Bastian Dean is an Australian rocker from Perth and a Dominant. As a member of the Dungeon Fantasy Club, he keeps his liaisons to submissives within the club. He’s supremely loyal and will go to the ends of the earth for those he cares for. However, when it comes to romance and love, he has been more the love them and leave them type out of a fear of commitment.

  1. Tell us about your heroine. Give us one of her strengths and one of her weaknesses.

Delilah Gregory is an opera superstar and submissive with the Dungeon Fantasy Club. She does whatever is necessary for those she loves. Although, she tends to lack confidence when it comes to men and feeling worthy of affection from the opposite sex.

lovememasterme_promo-2LOVE ME, MASTER ME (Dungeon Fantasy Club, Book 6)

Delilah Gregory is an opera superstar, enchanting the world with her soaring voice and voluptuous form. When her long-time friend, Declan, asks her to perform at his wedding, she can’t refuse, and heads to Mullardoch Manor in Scotland. She’s looking forward to finding a Dom to play with while she’s there, although with the demands of her career, and still recovering from her ex’s betrayal, the last thing on earth she’s looking for is an actual relationship.

Bastian Dean is a rock star, playing to sold-out stadiums worldwide. His bedroom tastes have always been on the wild side, and the only way he can find satisfaction is when he has a bound submissive begging for his touch. Unlike most rock stars, he keeps his dalliances to bona fide members of the Dungeon Fantasy Club – and as far away from the tabloids as possible. When he meets the ethereal beauty Delilah at the manor, Bastian is determined to enjoy the beautiful, submissive woman’s bounty.

Delilah is stunned by the ecstasy she finds within Bastian’s arms. She doesn’t even like the man much – aside from what he can make her feel even as he disciplines her bare bottom. But despite her misgivings about him, what starts out as a bit of fun and play in the dungeon soon turns into a relationship, where Delilah finds herself healing under Bastian’s passionate touch.

When the demands of her career and a threat from her past intervene, Bastian must use every note in his arsenal to convince Delilah that theirs is a duet worth singing. But can she be convinced to trust him with her heart?

Publisher’s Note: While this is the sixth book in the Dungeon Fantasy Club series, it – like all the others – can be enjoyed as a standalone. This story contains explicit erotic and BDSM scenes, so if such material is likely to offend you, please do not read it.

A visit with Marik Berghs

NewCoverGN-AmazonWhat genre(s) do you write in and why?

I write fantasy for YA, because as Tamara Pierce said it is the only genre where you can use the words honor and integrity and not have to qualify them. I thought about that a lot and have come to agree. Humans have always been hungry for the white knights, the super heroes and heroines, the larger than life beings that represent the best of who we can be. Mythology and folklore are the archives for these types of stories and now we flock to see the stories and the heroes and heroines in movies or in comic books. I want to write about characters that every reader wants to be.

Tell us about your current series.

The series that I’m writing now is fantasy set in a contemporary realistic place (southern Illinois, northern Kentucky and Tennessee). In essence the books are the stories of four young people of different cultures that have often been at war. I wanted to know how the characters could find their way around all that history in order to save their lives and their homes. The girls are human and the males are Fae, it just happened to work that way though there are many Fae females and human males in the series too. The heroine is mouthy, vulnerable, loyal to a fault and funny. She is seventeen when the series begins and has a secret she can’t afford to let anyone know.

What inspired your latest book?

I started writing the series over 12 years ago when my granddaughter suggested that we write a book together. These storyline has evolved but the heroine is still named the name that Hannah suggested—Lunabel. Over the years as new characters presented themselves it just seemed natural to tell their stories. I like the fact that they are undergoing the same events but their filters color their experiences so they each see things differently. I’m fascinated by that in real life: seeing how people perceive the same things in different ways. I wanted to give this girl a superpower, unlike any I’d ever read about and so I did. She can make sound. We are just finding out how powerful sound can be so I have a lot of research I can work with as well as my imagination.

Do you prefer to read in the same genres you write in or do you avoid reading that genre? Why?

I am an eclectic reader but usually don’t read in my genre. I become impatient if the world building is sloppy, or doesn’t hold up, or the characters are flat. I would rather read other genres where I am not as easily disappointed. That said there are some fantasy writers where I will read anything they write. Tamora Pierce, Julian Mays, Neil Gaiman, love them.

Describe the genre of this particular title, and is the only genre you write in?

The books in the Sanctuary series are fantasy but I write in other genres too. I am working on two other series, one is a contemporary mystery series and the other an historical mystery series.

How has your experience with self-publishing been?

I grew up in traditional publishing. My dad owned a small newspaper, so the process of producing written materials was a part of my upbringing.  Indie publishing just seemed like an organic step for autonomy. I had worked with small presses and had a short stories and articles published through traditional venues but I wanted more control over my product than even a small press offered. Control and traditional publishing don’t work in the same context. They really are two separate beasts and I’m not suited to the traditional process, where as, I speak self-pub as a second language. This works for me because I knew all the steps that were needed to translate a manuscript into a book. I also know the process of bringing the book to market. Thanks to the online distributers it really is possible to take control of your intellectual property and go with it.

What advice do you have for other authors wanting to self-publish?

Don’t expect a simple process and learn about the whole industry before you commit yourself. Especially know the difference between Indie publishing and Vanity Presses. It is inexpensive to publish your own book but it isn’t free. Join groups that focus on self-publishing, belong to a professional writer’s organization and attend talks that other writers are giving so that you can ask questions.

Tell us about your hero.

Jeremy, you mean other than he can read the future, do magic and is really a 400 year-old El’Vanin? Those are the extraordinary things about him but the more natural, or human side of him is the most interesting to me. He is honorable, compassionate, loyal and has a great sense of humor. He finds every thing that Lunabel does delightful. His weakness would be his tendency to be too honorable. And yes there are times he needs to be more flexible in his interpretation of the world and events. That being said, I love his sense of honor.

Tell us about your heroine.  Give us one of her strengths and one of her weaknesses

Lunabel is a good friend. She is fiercely loyal and honest, with a soft heart and lots more courage than good sense. She loves to read and hang out in the forest. Boys were never an interest for her until she meets Jeremy and then against her naturally skeptical self she is drawn to him.

Her weakness is that she doesn’t have confidence in herself. She has to learn that people won’t reject her if they know her secrets. And she has a huge secret.

Something for readers.

Readers should know that they are part of an artistic equation. When a writer writes they use a piece of creative spirit. That is enough for some writers but for me what makes my writing important is connecting with a reader. I pay close attention to what they say and am lucky to have people willing to read my work for critiquing and other people who read my work for review. Reviews are the pay off, that is when you hear what your readers find in your words. If you have enjoyed a book, leave a review, even just a few words means a lot.

EXCERPT From The Fae Wars – Grace Notes

I was three-years-old when I shattered all the glass in our living room. I remember sitting on the floor in the late afternoon sun, watching the dancing motes of light. I hummed and the specks spun and moved in patterns. Throwing up my arms, I danced and hummed and sang. Then I was fascinated with the way things rattled in concert with my sounds. When my grandmother’s metal plates thumped lightly against the walls, my five-year-old sister Myra got nervous.

“Stop it, Lunabel!” she’d shouted.

Too late! I was experimenting with variations of volume and pitch. I could make the windows buzz and the dining room chairs thrum.

Mom hurtled into the room, tripping over a low table. Unable to catch her footing, she smashed into the table corner and fell.

“George, she’s doing it again,” she moaned, rubbing her knees before she climbed upright again. Dad swooped in. He rescued a porcelain vase that had wobbled towards the edge of the bookcase.

By then Mom had limped over and picked me up. She held me away from her body like a leaky bag of garbage. “She’s vibrating, I can feel it through her bones.”

Dad lifted me from Mom’s arms and held me against his chest.

“Music!” Caught up in my game, I looked out the French doors in the living room and shrieked. Every pane of glass in the doors splintered, making its own tinkling noise.

“Mama, Mama, Mama,” Myra screamed. Her noise startled me and then I screamed. Light bulbs popped, the living room went dark and the explosion of leaded glass and double-paned windows caused Dad to spin around shielding me with his back. My crying forced the breath from my lungs. This scared me even more. I gasped, recovered and was winding up to resume my outrage.

Dad began to sing, softly.

“Sing a song of sixpence, pocket full of rye . . .”

Worn out, my cries subsided, replaced by dry sobs.

“Softly, princess,” Dad said, as he carried me upstairs to the rocking chair in my room.

“We need to let the house rest, sweetie.”

Mom followed us. Her eyes were narrowed and her lips stretched across her teeth.

“George, what are we going to do with her? She’s a freak,” she said. “There is no medical explanation for this.” Her voice was tight and harsh against my ears, like an arctic wind.

Mom would have known, she was a medical doctor.

Now I understand that my mother was horrified and afraid and more than a little overwhelmed. By unspoken family agreement, the episode was locked in a vault of shame. I remember exactly what everyone said that night. Not only can I make sounds that resonate with the things around me, I also have absolute echoic memory. This means I remember every sound, every nuance of sound, and I can reproduce it exactly every time.

I remember the tone of my mother’s voice when she told Dad I was a freak. I knew Mom was afraid. I knew.

I hear what people mean when they speak. I hear the words. I remember pitch. But most importantly, I hear the emotions hidden between their words.

Sound is a language of many levels.
